For the second year running we stayed here over New Year, and if anything, it was even better than last year. Rachel & Pepijn remain the perfect hosts, and Pepijn has now learned to smile (*joke*!!). Their service is still wonderful despite the attentions of their 1-year old daughter (who is lovely). Breakfast until midday was something every hotel in...

Spent 3 nights here in November and really enjoyed it. Great location, convenient for historic walks. Quiet room (our overlooked the garden). Stairs are the typical Dutch type, so be careful when traversing them. Breakfast was very satisfying. As was noted in other reviews, hosts Rachel and Pepjin were very good and very informative.

Spent just one night here after three days of Business outside of Amsterdam. Our short stay was a real pleasure indeed. The room was very well appointed with the usual layout of TV, safe, Bar fridge (all inclusive in your initial price) comfy bed and curtains that worked. The bathroom had all the free "gifts" of soap and sewing kit...

I can't really say anything that hasn't been said. The hotel is simply amazing!!! Location is great - close to downtown without being "in" the red light district. We changed our flights last minute and arrived a day early this meant two things 1 we had to change rooms and 2 Pepjin had to wait until 2 am for us...

My husband and I stayed here recently in the Rembrandt room canal view. I was worried at first when I booked this hotel thinking maybe I should have picked a more modern place, but I was wrong. This hotel was perfect, location, staff, food, everything. I can't recommend it enough. The owner was so nice and the guy that cooks...

Had a wonderful stay in room 5 which is at the top of the "lighthouse" stair case...found myself using my feet and hands crawling up at one stage! No need to worry about your luggage as it is taken up by staff which is a big plus! The location is fantastic with the canal in the front and the red...

Quirky place in a great location, just outside Red Light area near lovely bars and restaurants. The breakfast is really good, bes bread ever and great coffee. The snack bar including water, juice, beer and crisps was much appreciated and replenished daily. Rooms are individually decorated - we stayed in 2 of the back rooms which were both really quiet...

The location of this hotel is good. the facility is not great with rooms that are not too comfortable, very steep stairs and indifferent hosts. Breakfast was fine. place was clean. The area is interesting and within walking distance to many of the sites in Amsterdam.

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighbourhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.

“If you're an urban dweller, the canal-facing rooms won't seem too loud. As a New Yorker, I had no need of the white noise machine that was thoughtfully provided. The owners seem to think the quieter garden-view rooms in the rear are better, though, so if silence is important to you, try those. Be aware that there's no elevator and the steps are typically (for Amsterdam) steep and winding.”
