I normally stay at the Park Plaza opposite Central Station, due to its location and it feels safe and secure, but this trip we decided on something different. I looked for a hotel in Nieuwmarkt as it's my favourite area of Amsterdam. From there I then picked Misc as it had great reviews and I made the right choice. Check...

The hotel is tucked away right next to the red-light district, within easy walking distance to museums. The owners are the most charming people and very helpful with advice, booking tickets and anything else you might need. The rooms are beautiful, quiet and clean. Breakfast is excellent and plentiful, and they have great coffee! We went with our children and...

The hotel is cosy and homely with great interiour, the couple owning and running the place relaxed and friendly. Everytime we stopped for a chat we were offered coffee or soda free of charge, the minibar was also free (Beer, sodas, juices and snacks). A small bottle of Prosecco and chocolate was presented in the room upon checkin, a very...

Our stay here was a delight. The room was enchanting (although as we were at the top of the house we had to negotiate quite a steep winding staircase) the hotel is in a great location and Rachel and Pepijn were very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful hosts (who know a great deal about cocktails...). They did everything they could to...

Rooms are very nice, small but well furnished and with a lovely view of the canal. The bath is nicely split, toilet on one side and sink/shower on the other. Very centrally located just off the Red Light district - a bit of noise but the owners have thoughtfully provided a white noise machine to help and it does make...

This is a small but delectable hotel, and a great base from which to explore central Amsterdam. Rooms are thoughtfully and creatively decorated, and creature comforts are very well looked after. Breakfast is top class. Staff are friendly, and the owners delight in passing on their encyclopaedic knowledge of the city. I couldn't recommend more highly.

Our hotel was amazing! Small sliver of a building facing a canal, and we fortunately booked a canal-facing room, so it was a beautiful, one-of-a-kind stay. The location cannot be beat – it’s one street away from the red light district and is in a bustling Nieumarkt Square that has a conveniently-located supermarket (Albert Heijn) and many restaurants and cafes....

Nice place. Nice people. Nice breakfasts! It's a groovy little place to stay. Walkable distances all the things people go to Amsterdam to see. There was a welcome half bottle of fizz waiting for us in the room. The room was the typical size for a European capital. (NB: Amsterdam+old buildings=steep staircases.) And great water pressure in the shower. Gabriel...

What a wonderful boutique hotel. It is well located close to bars, restaurants and most of the sites of Hamburg. We walked to most of the places we wanted to visit or caught the ferry. We were a little taken back by the step stairs on arrival at the hotel (as we had two reasonably heavy suitcases) but these were...

A lovely place in the heart of Amsterdam. Rachel, Pepijn and Gabriel will make your stay amazing. From telling you the best places to eat to where to find the coolest museums to the amazing breakfast in the mornings. Absolutely loved this place. If you struggle with stairs then do note that this has traditional canal house stairs (very steep)....

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighbourhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.

“If you're an urban dweller, the canal-facing rooms won't seem too loud. As a New Yorker, I had no need of the white noise machine that was thoughtfully provided. The owners seem to think the quieter garden-view rooms in the rear are better, though, so if silence is important to you, try those. Be aware that there's no elevator and the steps are typically (for Amsterdam) steep and winding.”
