The guy who sat behind the reception and who seemed to be the owner (same guy who is in the photos - dark hair) made us pay for 5 nights upfront - seemed dishonest already, assured us that the hotel is quiet and clean. After a climb to the top floor with heavy suitcases we discovered how nasty, dirty and...

The Hotel Ben is a must for those on a budget looking for city centre accomodation. 5 Mins from Central Station makes this the ideal base to explore the delights of Amsterdaqm ... as long as you are not fussy. Points to note: 1) I had a room at the top - I didn't count all the steps but once...

As a reasonably experienced Amsterdam traveller (5 trips), I do know that hotel luxury can be hard to come by, especially when the purse strings are tight. I also know that a 2-night weekend (Fri/Sat) stay in a (very) central en-suite double room, for 65-euro per night, is a VERY good deal. Nevertheless, I was still a little taken aback...

If you're looking for luxury and fanciness then this is NOT the place for you. On the other hand, it suited our needs perfectly... centrally located and cheap. Friendly staff, we had a problem with the flushing, and the handyman fixed it straight away, and extra friendly house cat, which is adorable. The only downside was that we had to...

On arriving the room was quite high up. As hotel was fully booked on the Sunday we where offered too move if we felt was too many stairs. (My dad suffered a heart attack the previous year). Moved the next day. Very helpful at reception to provide directions etc. The hotel is very basic but clean, if you don't plan...

Friendly staff who helped us with how to get to places and the hotel is moments away from the heart of the Red Light district. you can work off the beer by carrying out a fitness routine by walking up the stairs - 70+ to our room at the top and all at 45 degree angle steep; always a laugh...

We stayed in this hostel last weekend for one night during a fleeting visit weekend visit to Amsterdam and it was perfect, exactly what we were looking for. This accommodation is a hostel and there a definitely no frills but for a short stay in the city it's perfect considering you don't spend much time in your room anyway. We...

Horrific place, we had mice in our room and were told by staff that its a common problem and to be expected in Amsterdam. Carpets and bed linen were disgusting and the service was horrific. Would rather sleep on the streets.

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighbourhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
