Detailed Reviews
I travel to Amsterdam very often and I almost always stay at Stakyokay Amsterdam Oost. There's literally nothing negative to say about it!
Staff: Attentive, friendly, knowledgeable about the city. They're never ''in your face'' - bartenders are always happy to have a chat while you're enjoying a drink. Goes without saying, as this is Amsterdam, everyone speaks perfect English. The staff is very diverse so most likely than not you'll find someone who speaks your language, should you need to.
Room: Let's get the ''negative'' point out of the way - rooms can get hot in the summer, but not to an uncomfortable level. I'd imagine in a heatwave or something it might get really stuffy but I mean, that's not something you need to worry about that often in the Netherlands! The beds are very comfy and the I've never had any complains with the rooms nor the guests. I alway felt pretty safe leaving stuff on my bed when I'm just popping downstairs etc (but obv be safe and don't leave stuff out). Showers are nice and hot and Amsterdam's water is clean (speaking of, there's a tap by the reception where you can fill your water bottles for free). You get your own reading light, power socket and USB charging lot.
Activities: The hostel does organise actives some nights and also walking tours etc but I'm not the most social person so I never participated. So if you're the same, don't worry. This hostel can be sociable, but also if you're wanna keep to yourself, it's easy to. I like the restaurant area downstairs when I wanna do some laptop work at night. Spacious and loads of power sockets.
Breakfast: Not the biggest but it's good value for money. If you wanna get breakfast somewhere else you'll pay just about the same as you'd pay for the buffet here, but you will probably only get a sandwich and a coffee. Here you can eat as much as you'd like, have a coffee or two and some organic juices.
Location: Please DO explore the area of Oost, it's beautiful!! Otherwise the tram stop is literally outside the hostel and it'll take you to the centre in 20ish mins. You can buy a travel card from reception. You can also rent a cycle from the hostel and explore Amsterdam like a Dutch person! :)

Stayed here on a school trip. Very tidy. Rooms a nice size, we had 3 bunks (6 beds). Breakfast was fruits, cereal, meats, yogurts and bread (they didn't have a toaster, this was the only bad thing) Great location. Right beside a tram stop.

When you go upstairs from the lobby into the hallways where the rooms are you IMMEDIATELY feel the heat, there is literally no air coming in. Same in the room itself, I was sweating like crazy and they make it so you can only crack the window a few inches. There were also ants on the windowsill and the floor. You put the sheet on yourself and I saw crumbs on my bed and used makeup wipes stuffed between the bed and the wall. The room was a nice size and it was great to have your own private shower and bathroom (stayed in a 4-person) but the heat made it unbearable. The restaurant food in the lobby was pretty decent and they have bike rentals but I wouldn't stay here again. I could have stayed in a hotel for the same price.

Hello valued guest, we are sorry about your experience. We understand that it can become hot in our rooms however we are an eco-conscious establishment. Hence, we decided to not install ACs. You are welcome to request for a fan at the front desk. Thank you for your other kind remarks. Best regards, Francine

I stayed for 5 nights in a 6 bed dorm. I went to Amsterdam for a 4-day event. Unfortunately my experience was bad in the overall. I couldn't feel fully comfortable regarding my intents.
I arrived at 4pm on a Thursday and the room was dark and quiet, curtains closed and people were sleeping. Ok, I put my bag on my bed (top) and went down to work with my laptop. Came back to the room around 7pm and it was the same. I couldn't see properly to prepare well my bed. The lights were dim so I took my bag silently back to the hallway to get my clothes out to get changed and go to my event.
Before leaving I asked for a room change and a bottom bed. Fortunately that was possible and actually some guys were leaving next day, so I just changed my bed.
Next day the cleaning lady just rearranged the beds with not much effort and left the new sheets. I didn't see she cleaned the beds. I then realised I slept without the sheets the first night!
I put my sheets in the new need and finally I have my space set.
It's not the first time that I stay in a hostel and I don't have any problems sharing spaces with people, but the design and conditions of this hostel, plus the dark light, didn't help me to feel good at all. The toilette door was noisy and very annoying, but one guest fixed it, a mattress made a lot of noise with the movement of the hyperactive boy sleeping, water stagnated in the sink, shower temperature was not regular, lights in the room were dark and perfect to cut your veins!
I kept going to the lobby toilette to use the mirror with light to put makeup and get ready to go out. I realised I had some bug bites in my face, but didn't pay attention. Now I'm back home, I see the bed bug bites in my face, knee, hip and hands. It itches a lot!

Thank you for taking your time and writing us a review. We are sorry to hear about your experience, sometimes staying in a dormitory might be annoying. Each bed in our dorm rooms has a small side lamp, but we can't help with the closed curtains and noisy sleepers. We hope that you notified our reception about the problem with the water temperature, so we could have taken action on it, we have a manager on duty available to assist you 24/7. We took your complaint about the bites very seriously, and we inspected the room that you were staying in. We didn't find anything suspicious, but we would very much appreciate it if you can follow up with us via email: manager@amsterdamoost.stayokay.com Thank you in advance. Kind regards, Dominika, duty manager, Stayokay Amsterdam Oost

This hostel was beautiful, clean, lots of space and nice little bar/cafe. Unfortunately every time we went to the reception we were met by awful, rude staff.
When we stayed there it was very warm and the windows could not open very much making the room heat unbearable at times - We asked for a fan at reception are were told they was none left as they had already all been handed out, so we asked if we could maybe move room...or at the very least get some sort of discount as we could not bear to spend time in the room unless for sleeping. We were told no and given zero solution.
I would never go back here, such a shame because everything else was good.

Shower had waves of hold and cold water. Staff was not super open to help out. It wasn't clear to us that we had to pay two extra taxes on top of the room price. The hostel itself is very hip, clean and nice location.

Thanks for your review. I will share your compliment with my colleagues from the reception. We hope that you notify us about the issue with the water temperature so we could have fixed it during your stay. The additional tourist tax was introduced by the municipality of Amsterdam since the 1st of January 2020. It applies to all the visitors starting from the 1st of January, also to the bookings that had been done before the tax was introduced. We informed all of the guests about it via email. We are sorry to hear that we didn't reach you with the information. It's great that you like our location. We hope to welcome you again in the future. Dominika, duty manager, Stayokay Amsterdam Oost

There are many beds in the room. Not that clean and the showers as well could be more clean. The food thing I really enjoyed was the breakfast buffet they had cereal fruit and toast as well as coffe and other things. The location is near to the center.

I would definitely give you 5 stars if there wasn’t for the heat. You can only open the top of the window and that’s it.. We had to go showering in the middle of the night and then sleep together with cold, wet towels to cool down. It was hard to sleep in wich way though. I know you get what you’re paying for when you choose hostel before a hotel without an AC, but please at least fix the windows so you can open them. I’m happy about everything else, good food, clean, very nice staff and so on. But the heat will give you a total of 3/5 stars

Cold rooms. Small blankets. You have to pay for your own towel. The €7.50 breakfast is not good value for money. Only the lounge and the staff are very good. Location could be better but is ok, 10/15 min to city centre by train or bus.

Hi Elaine, towels are only included in the 2-person "Comfort" Room in this hostel. Otherwise you can buy one at the reception for €4.50 if needed.
Check-in is from 14:00 and it's 10:15 for check-out.
Hope that helps!
Andrew L.
Hi there, great that you're considering to stay with us! Families are more than welcome in our Amsterdam Oost location, and we do have private rooms for up to 6 people including en-suite bathroom.
You can also take the #14 Tram from the hostel straight into the centre of Amsterdam. Perfectly safe for the kids!
Hi, we stayed there in October half term with 3 kids. Few minutes ride on the tram into central Amsterdam. You can purchase tram tickets at the hostel, 1,2 or 3-day travel tickets on the tram.
This hostel is clean, safe and strategically located - near tram station.
