It used to be a women’s prison and some of us were slightly confused to stay in the rooms which saw sorrow and cry. In fairness I must say that the staff did their best to please us whether it was a glass of champagne on arrival or a wonderful tasting of major hits of the hotel’s three star Michelin restaurant in the lounge bar. The location is also very convenient - within ten minutes walk to the town’s main square. But breakfast was the most frustrating moment, it was neither buffet nor a la carte - the waiters put on our tables kind of dish of the day, all meat, not bothering themselves to ask if we eat meat. All in all we preferred to have breakfast outside the premises because what we’ve got as an alternative to meat, hardly resembled morning bites. Michelin style breakfast is not the their strongest side.

The stay in Librije’s Hotel was truly a ‘Cherry on the Cake’ for our lunch at the Librije. The set-up for the room is excellent for a one-night stay and breakfast is extraordinary. We are now spoilt and have to get used to breakfast buffets again.

An old prison succesfully turned into a deluxe hotel. Trendy, comfortable, chic but NOT old fashioned. Lovely terrace.
Very warm, unconventional welcome by hotel staff very much appreciated. Room was perfect, quiet, cosy, hi-tech equipment, amazing bed and shower..
The hotel's restaurant is another treat; nice atmosphere, good food, you're really taken good care of. We ended the evening in the cosy bar in the basement.

A very relaxing experience, where everything happened to be just RIGHT.

Librije’s Hotel was amazing: everything was just perfect according to international standards. From the welcome with a glass of champagne and gooseliver lollies to the room, breakfast and the valet service.

Check-in was done whilst seated in the garden, sipping champage. You could set an estimated time for your dinner at ‘de Librije’. A car would be ready to pick you up in case it rained or you were wearing high heels. Restaurant is about a 5-10 min walk away.

When we were ready we were brought to our room, Verveine, where I found the best bed I have ever encountered in a hotel. You just want to dive in and stay there. There was a 2 person huge bath in the open bathroom and great Molton Brown products. Everything was top of the bill.

Let’s not even start about breakfast: this was amazing with delicious little dishes, fresh produce. Even after a dinner at de Librije, I could still make space because everything was so delicious.

After checking out, our care was ready; there were magazines and 2 bottles of fresh mint water in the car. Such a great goodbye.

Will be back next year when we are in the Netherlands!!

We stayed here for Christmas as we had also a reservation in their 3* restaurant. Extremely good service when you arrive. Somebody collects your luggage, coats etc and brought us to the inner garden of the building. There we got champagne and did we do the check in. This was very efficient. The butler brought us to the room.

The room is nice decorated but as it is an old building you see that some things do not perfectly fit. For example the door to the toilet closes, but does not really fit in the frame. We got one apple (check for yourself as this is a great thing) and some bottles of water.

The bathroom is open en next to the bed. If you take a shower you wet the bathroom floor because of the walk-in shower. The floor is wood so this will give problems in the future I guess. The shower is very good. Although they advertise with royal rooms the room is not royal. We stayed in normal rooms bigger then this room. You can also hear the neighbors. We heard a baby crying early in the morning, this is not pleasant after several wines and a late bedtime. I expected more of the room compared to the price you pay. We paid EUR 295 excl. breakfast, parking etc. This is a lot of money for a relatively small room.

The breakfast was very good, however I missed the normal eggs. I do not like poached eggs and that is what they serve here. They even serve hamburgers for breakfast. Never had one but the taste was very good.

When we left we got some bottles of water for in the car. Love the service in the hotel, especially the butler service but it’s not worth the price you pay for as the rooms are small and okay.

This 5 star hotel is located in an old prison from 1739. It is the extension of the 3 michelin star restaurant De Librije in Zwolle.
The hotel opened in may this year. It has a beatifull character and the service is wonderful. The character of the old prison is still visible but the achitect made is such a nice plays. The food is also very good. The butler showed us around and gave us a tour at the cooking school. After diner we ended in the wine bar in the old cellar, really an eaxperience. !! There was also a boat we could take to go on the canals of Zwolle, but we didn't had the time, maybe the next time.

Wow - what a treat to stay here. Welcome champagne with amuses at the terrace offered by the butler. The room was impeccable and very charming. Many nice and surprising details, absolutely not a standard hotel but a very deluxe homely atmosphere. Good airco and very good beds.
The restaurant Zusje (' little sister' of the famous 3 Michelin * Librije restaurant) surprised us both with excellent food & wines and kind and attentive service (and not expensive seen its standards). The breakfast was an experience by it self, never seen such original dishes and all with 'regional touch'.
You can see that the hotel is open for just 2 months and is still working on some small details because it is an old building that has been renovated but we are sure we will be back.

Last month we stayed at Librije's Hotel in Zwolle where we enjoyed a marvelous dinner and breakfast the next morning. At arrival we were welcomed by the friendly staff and who showed us our room. The rooms are located at a former "female penitentiary" in Zwolle. The rooms are comfortable and a surprise has been hidden in one of the bedside tables.

The 7-course dinner with the accompanying wine was great. A real taste explosion with each course served.

We already booked again for next year.

From the welcome, to the quality of the room and the quality of the food it would be difficult to improve. We stayed in May and can add little else to the other reviews already posted. It is not inexpensive, but it is worth it.

We can be clear about one thing: the food in the restaurant is great. Probably one of the best restaurants there is in The Netherlands. But don't stay at the hotel, because that was quite a disappointment and surely overpriced! They pretend to be top of the bill, but don't live up to it. Some examples.
1. We noticed a big dirty stain on the floor in our bathroom. So I told the reception. She would tell the housekeeping immediately and it should be cleaned right away! After dinner we came back in our room. The same dirty messy stain was still there.
2. We stayed with friend. We arrived separately. After we freshed up, we arrived down stairs, asking or our friends already arrived for diner. "No they didn't". After some time we asked or they were sure. "Yes we are. We keep a close eye on this". After some time I choose to phone our friends, and yes, they were waiting for us in an other lobby.
3. So we joint them. They were having a drink. We sat there a quarter of an hour. No one of the staff noticed us to offer us something to drink. So we sat there, with our friends, without a drink. 4. When we sat at our table, no one offered us something to drink. After we asked four classes of champagne, the glasses came, but no champagne. After we asked again, the served, without asking, a big name champagne (I think it was Pommery but maybe it was Moet), not particularly my favorite.
5. When we had our first nip, my friend found out there was his glass was broken.
6. And something alike happened during dinner. Before the dessert, the classes for the wine arrived, then the dessert arrived, and after a while we had to asked for the wine. These things may not happen in a two Michelin star restaurant!
7. And about the arrival. During dinner we found out that our friends were handed over an old book with an Ipad in it, with an introduction movie on it, and the business card of the staff member who welcomed them. We didn't get both.
8. There was a box with bath soaps and that sort of things in the bath room. When we opened it, it was nearly empty. We thought that was somewhat poor. Talking about it with our friends, we found out their box was full with soaps and other things. They just forgot to refill ours!
9. On the room there is a box you can buy with some adult toys in it, but our bed (I suppose all beds) was a twin bed. Can it be more unromantic? Please, just put king beds in de rooms and leave away these adult toy crap. We'll have much more pleasure then.
10. Don't know who decorated the rooms, but it surely wasn't an interior designer. It is an potpourri of styles, materials and colors, and the art is really bad. In the whole hotel by the way.

So my advise: have dinner at Librije's Zusje or, maybe better, at the Librije itself, if they have a table for you. But look for an other hotel. I would suggest the Sandton Hotel in Zwolle. Great experience with that place, and you can stay there two nights for the price of one at the Librije's Hotel.
