we have visited Marvao many times about 20 years and always said we would like to stay there. the Pousada is situated inside the castle walls. very comfortable and peaceful stay. the staff were very friendly
This is a very good hotel. Staff was very friendly, the place was warm despite our visit developed in the winter, the room was very clean, spacious and the bed was very comfortable. The breakfast was varied and rich, going from the usual continental breakfast with eggs and bacon, the yogurt and cereal, and varied types of bread and pastry, up to slices of the excellent local cheeses, hams and chorizos. Of course nice coffee and juices were available. And, last but not least, from the breakfast room there is a fantastic panorama of Spanish and Portuguese lands through a very large window: you even can see Cáceres, about 85 km away from Marvão. Marvão itself is a very well preserved medieval village, with a castle which has been started by the Moorich people in the end of the 9th century (around 875). I had the privilege of visiting the open castle at night, illuminated by upward focus lights and engulfed by fog, with nobody around, and it was a very nice experience. A nice set for filming a horror movie :-) In the day you have a 360 degree vision of the surroundings from the higher tower of the castle. The Portuguese writer José Saramago once stated that "from Marvão one can contemplate all Earth". And I believe him now :-) To conclude, my opinion is that if you want to enjoy Marvão, be sure to be a guest in "Pousada do Marvão" as it certainly will improve your experience, at a very good cost/quality ratio.…
beautiful hotel, super location, ideal to discover the region. Very nice and friendly reception, great breakfast. We really appreciate one of the very nice and well equipped, well ruled Pestana hotels. May be this Pestana hotel in Marvao will reconcile us with the Posadas in Portugal where we habe been so many times already. Unfortunately we had to notice that the service is going down more and more, except the Pousada in Marvao where everything is nearly close to perfection.
Our first Pousada and we were a bit disappointed in view of the price. First, our superior room was not with double bed. Wish we had realized that before as we probably would have gone elsewhere. Then on the 30th, there was a definite shortage of personnel as the receptionist / barwoman had to go and help out in the kitchen and the sole waiter was obviously stressed: Impossible to get an evening drink for some 30 minutes in an otherwise cosy area. Food and wine in the restaurant were OK, but nothing special. Otherwise staff are very kind and the old housing in the middle of the beautiful village of Marvao is quite nice. Driving in the narrow streets is also quite an experience 😌.
Nice and quite place, amazing view , good place to rest. The people were friendly, the breakfast was good, although it could be a bit more incremental. Small but very well arranged room. Very good dining room with a fantastic view
"A/C in room 303 is not as cold as we would have liked, but the room is comfortable and quiet."Read full review
