We stayed here a couple of nights and liked the place pretty much. The room was quite big, nice and also clean. The owners of the house are super friendly and also helpful. Breakfast is maybe a bit basic and could be improved.
An old manor house with antique type furnishings. Room very spacious but drawers and wardrobe tricky to open. No aircon or fan but fly screens on some windows. Wifi in lounge and around breakfast area. Packed lunches available. Lovely pool and gardens. Snooker table, Owners and staff all very friendly and helpful. Breakfast buffet limited but regularly filled up. Two restaurants in village within 10 minutes walk. Parking in grounds but access through archway at front would be tight for bigger cars. More parking at rear.
We were in one of the garden rooms, which was large enough and with an ensuite. Sadly the shower has one of those plastic curtains that make it impossible to keep the water inside, but apart from the bathroom was very nice. The bed was our only disappointment. Very nice to look at, but old and wooden and hence creaked at every turn, and also being traditional was on the small side. The grounds are fabulous, with a lovely pool and garden furniture. In the evening there is a bar open 5-11pm which serves just two choices of food but lots of drinks! We would have liked to have known it was closing early on the Monday, and did feel that there could have been a permanent notice up advising guests of this. The breakfast is eaten outside on nice days, and was good. Internet is only available in the bar area, and I think it would be a nice gesture to guests to have this area more available - we have 3 grown up children that we like to keep in touch with, send pictures to, etc., and we did feel a bit cut off from them here. There is plenty of parking - and the parking at the back of the property even has shade!…
We stayed here for a walking holiday. The building is an old manor house, nicely restored by a German couple who emigrated to the Azores twenty years ago. The restoration took in the gardens, which are also lovely. This is not a luxury retreat but our room was nevertheless spacious, with plenty of storage (not too may drawers but the cupboard was vast), comfortable beds and a large and well organised bathroom. There is no air-conditioning but this is the Azores so you are not likely to need it - maximum day temperature rarely exceeds 26 deg C or so. Breakfast was abundant, with plenty of choice, including eggs, and can be taken outside on the garden terrace. Gerald, our host, was polite, helpful and informative - he has lived in the Azores for many years and has lots of helpful suggestions for walks, restaurants etc. There is no restaurant but on some days light supper dishes were available (pasta - which can make a pleasant change as this is not typically available in local village restaurants). There are two passable restaurants in the village, within a few minutes walk; and a village beach (largely protected from Atlantic waves, a few minutes further on). There are nice walks from the hotel door and superb ones within a 30-40 minute drive. There is an evening bar form 17:30 onwards and it is nice to sit outside with a drink either before or after dinner. There is a cavernous sitting room on the ground floor of the main building, which we more or less had to ourselves. WIFI is only available in the siting room but it works well enough. We found this a lovely base for walking and touring San Miguel and would be very tempted to stay there again when next visiting the island.…
Pretty building, plenty of parking, nice pool and gardens. Feels a bit dated but that's part of the charm. Would have liked a room safe and wifi in room. Toiletries not replenished. Often no hot water in room out of normal hours. Efficiently administered by owner Gabriele with the help of staff especially the very pleasant Olga; both of them speak good English. Morning staff helpful but preferred to speak Portuguese. Decent breakfasts (except the orange juice), and good picnic lunches. Tour company's indication of occasional at-home meals cooked by co-host Gerd did not materialise but Olga will cook spaghetti. But 2 restaurants in interesting village ( Fim do Seculo good; Sagitario prices are at the whim of the owner) as well as snack bars, and in neighbouring Lomba and Sao Bras. Quite a drive from the west of the island but could be part of a successful two-centre hol.…
