The building is so beautiful...stuffed with antiquities and lighting to die for. It's an instagrammer's heaven. The staff treated us like old friends and could not have been more helpful. Great location in the old town surrounded by Fado bars and buzzy little family restaurants. Fabulous breakfast. A gem of a place perfect for a romantic break.

We stayed here for 3 nights for our wedding anniversary. We stayed in the Sonya room, which was large, airy, comfortable & quiet. My only gripe about the room would be the strange bathroom set up which has clear glass to the ceiling, meaning the heavy curtains need to be drawn for privacy...I'm baffled as to why they haven't enclosed...

Bright and spacious rooms overlooking the water. Wonderful coffee in the morning, along with perfect breakfast service. The manager couldn't have been more gracious -pointing out interesting places to visit, making restaurant reservations, arranging a tour for me, advising me on getting around, sending tea up to my room when I came down with a cold, etc. The hotel is...

Palacete Chafariz D'el Rei is a wonderful hideaway in the Alfama district within walking distance to many sights and restaurants. We stayed in the Grand Torreo suite, which has several rooftop terraces with sweeping views of Lisbon and the harbor. The breakfast was delicious and very filling. The best part about this little gem of a hotel is the staff,...

Now this was a rather new hotel experience for me. I have stayed at my part of luxury hotels across the globe, however, most of these have been modern and minimalistic. Chafariz d'el Rei is absolutely amazing. A safe haven for the quality-minded traveller, who is quite easily swayed by pure luxury. The hotel features just 6 suites and even...

As a base for our first visit to Lisbon, this little hotel was wonderful in every way possible. A tastefully restored merchant's house from the early 1900's, all rooms have been brought back to their former glory. The staff could not do enough for us, and the location is perfect for discovering Lisbon. Just fabulous!!

We had only visited the hotel for breakfast, but the experience was beautiful - the building is an absolute gem with such a glorious feel to it! The food was fantastic, service impeccable and the outside area had a stunning view! A very special location that makes you want to come back and stay there forever!

Sure, the entrance is hard to find the first time, so I recommend you ask the hotel to arrange a private transfer. We did, it was 25 euros and worth every penny to be driven straight there and have our bags taken straight to our room. The hotel is just gorgeous. Its location is perfect - you can literally walk...

The entrance to this lovely hotel dating back to 1909 is slightly tucked away from the main street and not easy vehicle access, but be assured that the effort to find it is worth while. It is in the Alfama district (Old Town) nearly opposite the cruise ship terminal. As you step through the front door you see ornate floorings, stained...

Staying in Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria

Neighbourhood Profile
Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria
Explore narrow streets and alleyways, small cafes and, of course, the internationally acclaimed Fado music. The earth-shattering Great Earthquake of 1755 destroyed most of the city but the contiguous neighborhoods of Mouraria, Castelo and Alfama remained standing to this day. These neighborhoods represent Lisbon at its historical best. The cool breeze of the Tagus river will take you up the hills to the sound of Fado, where you'll discover the best "tascas," eat delicious fresh fish and drink great wines. Discover hidden viewpoints and ancient traces of other civilizational ruins in the heart of the Portuguese capital. These are centuries-old neighborhoods that will welcome you to the very best of old Lisbon culture.
