I spent three nights at the Casa Balthazar on the recommendation of a friend who had previously stayed there. It was a great suggestion. My room, the Calçada II, was spacious and comfortable with a terrific walk-in shower, a big bed, a nice table for sitting at (plus other comfortable chairs), air conditioning that overcame hot weather in Lisbon, and...

My wife and I, and two couples, stayed at Casa Balthazar for 2 nights in September 2016. We had the Duque Garden suite. The room was spacious and well appointed, with contemporary comforts and a charming 'antique' / classic european style. The hotel pool is perfect for a plunge after a day walking the city, and the help yourself honor...

Casa Balthazar is an absolute gem in the heart of Lisbon. The rooms are large, spacious and well equipped. The hotel is located in the heart of Chiado and makes easy walking to all of the best food, shopping and attractions the city has to offer. The views from the rooms are wonderful and they give you a true sense...

Loved our time at Casa Balthazar! The pool was the perfect respite on a hot day. The breakfast was simple but tasty. The room was simply decorated. My one con: they desperately need new pillows. All of the pillows in our room were like pancakes. A simple upgrade for a nice place to stay.

We stayed here for 4 nights. Feels like home. This hotel is so well located. Everything at your doorstep - great food, monuments, shopping - perfect!! Our room was large with a sitting area and huge bathroom. Breakfast every morning was delicious and served in our room. Others had breakfast by the pool. The hotel staff were all so friendly...

My son and I spent 4 nights here celebrating his 21st anniversary before he returns to his senior year at university. It's in a perfect location in the Chiado close to everything. Gorgeous terrace with incredible view from our room. Delicious breakfasts. Charming and quiet courtyard with a pool. Very helpful staff. If you take a day trip to Sintra,...

This hotel was a total surprise - in a very good way! We didn't know what to expect and the outside didn't look much, in a side street up a steep hill in Lisbon central. Once through the doors, it was like an oasis in a hectic world. Such a beautiful hotel, with green, open spaces, a lovely pool and...

Balthazar My wife and I (Canadian and in our mid 30s) recently took a road trip through Portugal staying in Lisbon, Evora, Lagos, and the Alentejo Coast near Vila Nova De Milfontes. All the places we stayed at were in the same price range and so we believe we’re able to make comparisons between our experiences at each place. See...

A wonderful experience. The location is very central yet it is quiet and peaceful with wonderful pool area. The best part was the service and care taken by staff. The breakfast is a real treat. I would highly recommend. Bring your walking shoes when visiting Lisbon - it is billy goat country.

My husband, teenaged son, and I stayed here for 5 nights - with a one night break in Porto in between. The staff couldn't have been more gracious or helpful to us. The rooms are spacious and beautiful, and the property is very well-located. Breakfast is very generous and delicious. Thank you Maria, Antonia and Sabin (sp.?) for wonderful stay....

Staying in Chiado & Carmo

Neighbourhood Profile
Chiado & Carmo
The traditionally trendy "Chiado" (literally, "squeak", the nickname of a 16th century poet) offers plenty of cafes, restaurants and bars where you can stop for a cafe or cocktail, after exploring its streets, shops, art galleries, theaters, museums and viewpoints. It's also the home to the statue of the famous statue of portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa, having is usual espresso at "A Brasileira" as he used to. You can also enjoy breathtaking views of Lisbon from the Elevador de Santa Justa or the Carmo Convent, for example. A commercial neighborhood at its core, especially for its Garrett and Carmo streets, Chiado is to this day a mandatory visit in Lisbon.
