Very nice hotel in the land of Obidos. At was a bit challenging finding the hotel, as the narrow winding road up the hill made it difficult to judge exactly where to go. Fortunately they have a nice parking garage as parking is premium in this city. They have a medieval theme with suits of armor and the staff wore tunics with a royal emblem. We ate across the street at the top-ranked A Nova Casa de Ramiro, but you should make reservations in advance. Overall a good stay with a very nice room.
We chose this locatoin for many reasons: 1. It's historical--built [as I recall] around 1300. They have remodeled it, updated it [yes, there IS AC access] and have decorated it in true medieval fashion. There are knights in armor decorating the place, and the woodwork has maintained the look and feel of times gone by. 2. Unbelievable breakfast--it's close to having two banquet tables PLUS two small round tables -- full of food and breakfast drink. They even had soy milk for those of us who are lactose intolerant [thanks!] For my husband, they had delicious pasteis de nata, plus a variety of other baked goods, such as apple cake, sponge cake, breads, as well as hot scrambled eggs and sausage or bacon. Fresh fruits abound, and the dining area sports ] cloth tablecloths and napkins for a touch of elegance. 3. Close to everything, but easier for taxis and luggage: We chose not to live inside the castle walls, but just outside it, so that the taxi could drop us --and our luggage -- off. Otherwise, you may have to lug your suitcases over cobblestone streets by yourself while trying to find a different bed and breakfast if you instead choose a place inside the walls that may be inaccessible to taxis or parking. Since this hotel is just steps outside the walls, our taxi from Lisbon [pre-arranged, decent pricing] could drop us off here and we were literally maybe 200 feet from a castle entrance. 4. Professionalism: I did look into another bed-and-breakfast, but they wouldn't answer questions by email, or provide their contact information. This hotel was professional, easy to contact, with front desk help available, a factor of great importance if things go wrong. 5. Good modernization: Good number of AC outlets, good wifi, TV. Room is adequate, though not as large as many of the international hotel chains. The only negatives: 1. Our bed was hard. 2. A small factor: a nice "retaining-the-theme" factor was the use of very large, metal keys. Far larger than the skeleton keys you see in old movies---but more secure, as the locking mechanism is unlike anything I've ever seen. Unfortunately, it can be hard to unlock a door. Nevertheless, the receptionist will teach you and you eventually do get the hang of using the keys. A minor detraction, but worth noting so you are prepared for it. This is a good choice, despite the hard bed. It's VERY clean, the bathroom had good, fluffy towels, they have a bidet if that is important to you, and they had ample niceties [shampoo, Kleenex, etc.] The TV had some English-speaking TV channels [crime shows, etc.], which proved handy after the feet needed a rest! Consider this hotel, as they're kind folks who keep a clean, historic place, and feed you well!…
They take their medieval theme seriously in the decor and the room key. Very comfortable and clean, limited bar with comfortable seating indoors and outdoors, very good breakfast, nice pool but too cool for us in mid-October. Helpful staff speaks English very well. Our room had a French balcony onto the courtyard as did most in the hotel. Excellent restaurant Jamon Jamon just across the street.
Spent a night year while traveling through Portugal. The hotel is located in a great spot, right next to the wall with entry only a few steps away. The staff were very pleasant & helpful. There were also some nice restaurants located only a few steps away and the staff was happy to make reservations for us. Our room was very nice and I would stay here again.
This hotel has everything. Great staff, rooms, decor and location. Definitely recommend an overnight stay here to see Obidos without the day trippers. Very helpful and friendly reception staff. I injured my foot and they immediately brought me ice. Best breakfast also..
"Stay two nights. There are several very good restaurants in Obidos at very reasonable prices."Read full review
