The atmosphere of this place is just fantastic. It's a great place to relax. Enjoy the view from high above the ocean and stroll around in this magnificent fortress. The steps up through the gateway also contribute to the fantastic atmosphere. Staff was extremely friendly and beakfast was good. The only drawback was the first night when we stayed in...

The idea of staying in a 17th century fortress may seem attractive, but actually doing it is something else. The terrace had a fantastic view of the River Sado, and service at the desk and in the dining room was excellent, but this pousada is in a castle at the end of a very steep road. The entrance to reception...

It is a lovely setting with pretty views and the staff are very friendly and helpful. However, for what you pay I would not stay here again as the rooms are definitely below average. Curtains falling apart, old furniture (they really seem to take advantage of the fact that this is a historic building!), old bathroom and an old tiny,...

And worth every penny! We stopped over in Setubal on our way to the Algarve and this was the most beautiful place, with unbelievable vistas, wonderful staff, well appointed guest rooms and a fabulous dining room.

I stayed here with my wife for one night here in August during our honeymoon (three weeks in Spain and Portugal). The view, from the top of a fortress along the sea/ocean, is amazing. The staff is friendly. The food in the hotel restaurant is great. However, the hotel is really expensive for Portugal. My suggestion is that you visit...

We really enjoyed our stay here. The staff were friendly & the restuarant excellent. Ask for a room with a view over the bay. Have a light lunch on the terrace overlooking the bay and just enjoy the luxury. Access is up a long steep ancient castle staircase (so would be a problem for anyone with walking difficulties). However the...

This place was amazing. It was beautiful, peaceful and relaxing. Service was great. We had a room facing the water. It was large by European standards. The on site restaurant had us coming back every night. The staff was helpful and nice. In the afternoon we sat on the terrace and relaxed with our drinks just watching the harbor activity....

We stayed for one night on 23rd September. We have to say that Setubal itself is not the most picturesque of towns but the Pousada at the top of the hill overlooking Setubal is a lovely place. We were lucky enough to be allocated a split-level room that had a living room upstairs that opened up onto a little bacony...

My wife and I spent our honeymoon at this Castle. I mean, this is REALLY a castle. There were few people there, the restaraunt in the castle is very quiet, beautiful, and good food. The Castle at night is beautiful, you can look out of the window and see a long lit shoreline ... and if you walk atop the...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Pousada de Setubal is situated in the nearby historical city of Setubal, offering stunning views of the River Sado, the Troia peninsula and all of the surrounding Natural Park of Arrabida. In this old fort of seventeenth century architecture, named Sao Filipe, you can feel the traces of the past, having more than four centuries of history. Just a breath of imagination could give live to the thick walls and gravestones of this historical Pousada, rising out of the cold slabs, a lively picture of live in the court during the reign of the Spanish monarch Filipe II. For those who enjoy golf, you will find near the Pousada de Setubal, Sao Filipe, the magnificent golf courses of Troia and Montado. Within the Setubal region you can also go on cruises on the River Sado to do some dolphin watching, visit the beaches in Arrabida and eat traditional fried cuttlefish. ... more   less
