My partner is gluten free, there were no GF substitute options available despite stating there would be. The dinner buffet was also €34 euros for hardly any choice and was not worth that price each which we only found the price after we checked out. The food was ok but often cold and lacked selection. The staff were always friendly and the cleaners did a wonderful job every day. The rooftop bar, we wouldn’t recommend. It had a strange atmosphere and wasn’t friendly. We felt because we were young guests, other guests were snobby with us and the hotel lacked atmosphere and liveliness. The idea of the hotel is good and the facilities are good, but I would think twice about going if you are a foodie or like a more fun and down to earth holiday.

Just arrived back from this Hotel. We had a great stay. The standard rooms have a small balcony only 2 chairs can fit on it. Staff were friendly and go out of there way to help you. Breakfast was excellent with plenty of variety for everyone. Rooms were cleaned daily to a high standard. Things I’d change are gym to open earlier at 7.30am, play music around pools. This is the first Adult only hotel we’d stayed in and found it lacked atmosphere not from the staff but the people staying there, when we smiled or said good morning you didn’t get any response! It is on a steep part of the area so flat shoes are a must and if you have mobility problems this isn’t for you.

Our whole trip was exceptional. The staff can't do enough for you. Big shout outs to Michael the entertainment organiser for endless energy; Elizabeth the rep and especially the handyman who found my wedding ring after I dropped it down the bathroom sink. Not good on your honeymoon-I will be eternally grateful!!! The room (610) was spotless with beautiful views. We loved the location although we are fit adventurers and enjoy a walk (uphill and down!!)but I think a taxi into the centre is only around 5 euros? The food is amazing. Seafood and fish that tastes so fresh. Huge variety and very attentive staff. We enjoyed the beds on the rooftop;plus you can visit the Savoy rooftop for free with your room key. Also the indoor pool when it got too hot. I would recommend a trip in the cable cars to Monte and the Botanical Gardens. What a view and stunning scenery. We booked a Living Sea boat trip. Wow. What service and value for money. Dolphins swimming alongside the boat; drinks; delicious lunch and an hour to swim in a lovely bay. A great, friendly family business who can't do enough for you. We loved our time in Funchal. The world is a huge adventure but if we come back I would only look to stay here.

Super hotel... room, food, facilities all excellent. Great staff - special thanks to Michael, who was a non-stop organiser around the hotel, and Maria who looked after us in the restaurant. Didn't manage to use all of the facilities. Enjoyed the pools, indoor is lovely. Great outdoor games area, shuttleboard got plenty of use. Fantastic views from the roof top bar, with entertainment and a jacuzzi. It is on a hill but an easy walk down to Funchal with a €6-9 taxi back (depending on time of day/night). Would highly recommend the jeep tour around the west of the island. It's worth organising a taxi up to the gardens and then to the top of the cable car, and then buy a ticket back down to Funchal with amazing views. The island is beautiful. So green. Dramatic landscapes all around. I think we'd hire a car for a couple of days and do some exploring ourselves. Great holiday, we hope to return one day :)

Our first visit to this well kept hotel was for our Ruby wedding anniversary in July 2013, we loved the hotel and returned in May 2015 to see Madeira in the spring, its wonderful flowers and the Jacaranda trees in full bloom. The hotel, which was then called the ‘Savoy Gardens’ was still the same. We first noticed changes taking place when we spent Christmas 2018 there, where the pool bar had been at the side of the hotel was gone to be replaced by a a new restaurant building, this was in addition to the main hotel restaurant. This meant a new pool bar had to be set up on the corner of the pool where there had previously been space for sun beds. A new extension was also in the process of being built. On our return for Christmas 2019 the new extension was open and not only added additional rooms, but also an indoor pool and gym. During all our visits most of the staff were the same and always welcomed us back, it was like seeing old friends, sadly, some have now either left or retired. none the less, the new staff, who we met for the first time, were all as friendly and helpful. The excellent standards are mostly the same but it was sad to see the dress code for the evening buffet dinner had gone. No longer are people expected to wear something smart casual - any old thing seems to do and some guest looked really scruffy, which was sad to see. Before we left in 2019 we were informed the hotel name was to be changed, for what reason we never understood and to us it will always be the Savoy Gardens as we struggle to remember the new name. It seems the local taxi drivers are having the same problem. On our first evening in Funchal, when we jumped in a taxi and said: “Madeira Blue Gardens”, the driver looked quizzically at us and hadn’t a clue where we wanted to go. Once we said “Savoy Gardens” the recognition was instant and he took us straight there. After that we always asked to be taken to the Savoy Gardens and never had a problem. How new guests guests who do not know the old name will cope is anyones guess when their taxi drivers look confused and shrugs their shoulders. The hotel entertainment was as good as ever, it was always down in the Magnolia Lounge, another change was now it was on the roof terrace which was pleasant as there are wonderful views over Funchal and the sea from up there. We still like the friendly hotel and will return, but not for a while and hope, in the meantime, nothing else changes, other than a return to a better dress code.

We were particularly lucky as we were upgraded to a garden villa, however every aspect of this hotel was excellent. The room was clean and comfortable, there were plenty of sunbeds, the pool was really busy, in fact eight people was the most I saw in there at any time. The daytime and evening entertainment was pitched perfectly, it was quite low-key, but the entertainers of an evening work of an excellent standard. Food and drink at the pool bar is not cheap, but there is a CAFE 100 m down the hill where you can purchase snacks for the day and a supermarket in about another hundred yards. There was fresh water in the room every day, fresh fruit on arrival. We did half-board as it was such good value. Evening buffet was what you would expect with a lot of food being served in sauces so that it would stay warm and not spoil but there is a grill and pastas dishes were cooked to order. Lots of salad choice. The breakfast buffet was excellent. The staff are polite professional friendly and helpful. Special mention goes to Michael who you took on his role as entertainment host so professionally and was always there to help the clients. Also Angel for his welcome in the restaurant and Cynthia for her smiling welcome. Carlos Jack and Carlos in the rooftop bar also work really hard and made us laugh. Reception staff were efficient, friendly and welcoming.

The hotel was really good, only issue being on a large hill, but then Funchal is hilly..... Lovely walk downhill into town where we had some lovely meals. Walked back but only once! Suggest catch the number 24 bus for 2 euro or a taxi for 8 euro. Had a truly wonderful time and will definitely be back again!

Pros: Food: If you can do half board, like we did.. Food was on point! No complaints what so ever. 10/10 As a result, would advise walking to walk off the food. Staff. On point. No complaints from any staff member we encountered. Hotel: on point! Roof terrace quiet and peaceful. (Don’t think people realised it was there, shhh) Didnt do indoor pool, but looked beautiful. Did the West coast tour, Via Tui rep. actually pleasantly surprised with the quality of the lunch provided. I don’t like tour coaches, sitting for hours, but this one, even though all day 9 to 5, you didn’t spend more than 30mins on the coach with a stop to get off. Result! Cons: Overheard a couple of guest complain that the Air condition was not working in their room. We had no issues with our room, see view and pool facing . Hotel on a hill, so suggest good pair of comfortable shoes for walking. (Taxi and bus available . Note: Mask needed for bus) Improvements: Missing a trick with the roof terrace.. They have three shaded Beds, but no shade for loungers, Need more Umbrellas. Overall. I would stay here again and would recommend to my family and friends
