Recently returned from a 13 night stay at the Baywater Resort. Chose Baywater for it's Choeng Mon location, as opposed to tourist packed Chaweng, having lived on Samui for a while a few years back. There are numerous Restaurants, Bars and eateries within walking distance. The Orchid has great Thai and Western food. The Cocktail King has Happy Hour in the evening with Cocktails around 79THB. On Wednesday nights there is live entertainment that coincides with the Walking Street Market on the Main Street of Choeng Mon. The five star "Royal Muang Samui Villas" also sets up a Street Stall with delicious and cheap food.
The Baywater is fairly new with large rooms and tropical gardens. It has a large pool, not too deep. It flows around an "island" with sun beds, lounges etc. There is also a swim to bar. The Breakfast spread was a testament to the culinary talents of Joseph the young and talented Maltese Chef. Making his own cheeses and jams. Joseph's presence was evident every morning at breakfast. Extremely friendly and courteous, we looked forward to our daily morning conversation with him at breakfast. He even offered to make a made to order dish, should we want. Abdalla, the Resort Manager also had a strong presence, greeting guests each morning at breakfast. Assuring us that he was there to help and assist. On one Occassion I lost my purse, it contained about 5000THB. I realised only the day after, that I must have lost it at lunch the previous day around the pool. I enquirer with Staff, and to my relief it was found by a guest and handed to staff the following day. It was a good feeling to experience all round honesty.
If the hotel stays as is, we would recommend it in a heartbeat. Unfortunately it has been bought out and taken over by new Management. It was in a Transitional Stages during our stay with both Old and New Management present. Abdalla has now left, departing the day after us. The hotel is now called "Portofino Baywater Resort" with Sri Lankan & Indonesian Management, apparently owned by Malaysian Company. They are heavily advertising in China and targeting and anticipating predominantly Chinese tourists.
There was evidence of this already. On our second last day we were having drinks around the pool. An elderly Chinese grandmother and her granddaughter swimming in the pool. We were quickly put off our drinks with the grandmother continually croaking and spitting phloem into the pool. On occasions her spit hitting the side of the pool, which she then washed into the water. We got up and left, advised Abdalla and suggested he inform "New Managemet" to erect Signs around the Pool outlining "Pool Rules and Etiquette". It was not only a disgusting action, but more importantly a health and hygiene issue in regard to all of the guests. Needles to say, we did not swim in the pool again.
So if you are intending to stay at the Now Portofino Baywater Resort I suggest you carefully check all New and Recent Reviews. It's a real shame as it is a beautiful Resort in a great location and loads of potential.
Just hope the New Managemet take note.

There's no doubt this resort is every bit as stunning in reality as it appears in photos. It's modern yet comfortable. Very stylish with quality fixtures and fittings. In styling it reminded us of Indigo Pearl (now The Slate) in Phuket where we have stayed many times.

Our check-in by a flustered young lady was a little haphazard. No welcome drink or cold towel. I'd sent two emails prior to check-in to ask if we could have a ground or first floor room due to my husband's health issues and difficulty climbing stairs. No response to either and when we arrived staff were still unaware of our request. Communication issues aside, we were profoundly grateful to be upgraded from a deluxe room to a deluxe pool access room. (As it turns out all the ground floor rooms are private or shared pool access.) Our pool (shared with one neighbour) was divine and absolutely worth it if you can stretch the budget.

But there are a few things to be aware of if you are considering booking a stay at Portofino Baywater. The resort has links with an international vacation club that offers 'Dream Trips' with the corny tag line of 'You should be here' (hence the title - google it if you are interested - a fascinating read. Like Amway for travellers.)

For the first few days there was a large tour group present; I'd guess 90% of guests were Chinese. Many travellers would be aware of the huge influx of Chinese tourists to Thailand on group tour packages, many of whom are travelling outside their own country for the first time. We have no issue with novice travellers (or Chinese for that matter) but we observed some rather distasteful behaviour that marred what would otherwise have been a wonderful stay. For instance one guy wore swimming trunks and nothing else to breakfast. Aside from being disrespectful, I am not keen on seeing a sweaty, shirtless man leaning over food at a breakfast buffet. The staff did nothing but I remonstrated with him about being more respectful. He obviously knew some English profanities and told us where to go.

We shared our private pool with some guys who very much enjoyed coughing up phlegm and spitting it over the edge of the pool. The pool was beautiful, perfect temperature, neck-deep (I'm short) but we only used it when we didn't have our neighbours second-hand smoke to contend with. It makes you wonder why even bother to request a non smoking room when booking.

Guests lit up cigarettes at breakfast or in the lobby while staff turned a blind eye. You can argue that it's perfectly legal to smoke but so is breaking wind. And if I need to let one rip, I don't stand next to someone eating their breakfast, I have the courtesy to move away and downwind. A staff member told us the poolside area is non-smoking except for the bar area. The 'island' in the middle of the pool has no ashtrays but nor does it have signs prohibiting smoking so butts littered the synthetic turf. We had to tell one guest he could NOT come into the pool with his lit cigarette.

If the management at this resort want ALL guests to enjoy their stay they will need to do their bit in educating guests and reinforcing some fundamental rules befitting a 4 star resort. This needs to be addressed with staff training so they are confident in handling difficult situations (so that guests don't have to). There is no in-room hotel guide so perhaps some rules / etiquette in various languages is needed along with signage around the resort, indicating where smoking is allowed and prohibited. If these things are not dealt with guests from Europe, UK, US, Canada and Australia will simply go elsewhere in a competitive market and leave this place to the selfie-stick brigade. We did raise our concern about certain behaviours with the manager Nu, and he clearly understood where we were coming from, being of Chinese descent himself. We are hopeful he will implement our suggestions.

Funnily enough on day 4 I noticed one tiny sign sitting discretely behind the juice station at breakfast in Chinese language with pictures depicting no smoking / no spitting, On day 5 another guy walked into breakfast in his swimming trunks and a staff member pointed out the sign, now placed more prominently. She handled it really well and he returned to his room to put a shirt on - success!

One blessing is that the tour groups mostly go out sightseeing after breakfast and return late afternoon, so it's very, very quiet during the day. Having travelled to Samui several times, we have done the sightseeing and were happy to spend most of the day at the resort where we often had the huge main pool entirely to ourselves. I can understand why other reviewers mention 'lack of atmosphere'. It's always fun to meet like-minded travellers from all over the world (or at the very least to say hello to) but that doesn't happen when the majority of guests don't speak English and don't mix outside their friend or family groups. This certainly changes the vibe of the place but if that doesn't bother you, then you will really enjoy this resort.

The deluxe pool access rooms are really spacious. The beds are very comfortable and sleep quality excellent as there was no noise whatsoever at night (did I mention how quiet it is!) nor was there any noise from the room above, if there was anyone in there. The bathroom / wardrobe area is also huge. Not a great deal of space for clothes but no big deal. Lovely big shower with huge monsoon shower head. The comfy day bed on our terrace was perfect for relaxing. Our pool and terrace got the milder morning sun and shade in the hottest past of the day, which suited us perfectly. Our room/pool (2101) was also stepped back from the pathway and had some plants for privacy, where others in the block (2103 - 2107) were close to the path people use to walk to the lobby.

The staff were all very pleasant and friendly. We are always respectful toward Thai staff wherever we go and have fun making conversation with our limited Thai, and their limited English. They seemed to really enjoy the opportunity to interact with guests. You can imagine how disheartening it would be constantly having to deal with people who don't know please or thank you, let alone able to speak any Thai. The egg chef seemed genuinely surprised to hear us say 'good morning' and 'how are you' in Thai. That must make a nice change from guests who point at a picture to indicate how they'd like their eggs cooked. A special thanks to the lovely Mim who cleaned our room and decorated our bed with cute towel animals and beautiful frangipani flowers.

I did find the young ladies at reception to be sweet but really hard work. Just a simple request like trying to arrange a hotel car to take us to Bangrak Pier was incredibly frustrating. If there is one place a resort needs staff with really good English it's at their front desk. Goodness knows how they cope with the Chinese guests. I asked the reception staff if they could please print out our ferry tickets. Just trying to get the actual email address to send it to was a long process. Then after much confusion, numerous phone calls and animated discussion between three staff they insisted my email had not come through despite me sending it 4 times. When one of them invited me to look at the computer myself I immediately saw the problem and after a quick lesson in using the 'sort by' function in Outlook they could actually see the most recent messages in their Inbox!. (Note to management: if you have an opening for a customer service supervisor / IT support person I have all the skills you need ;)

On the Sunday we arrived they were holding a Champagne Brunch. We are not huge fans of buffet lunches; we are not big eaters and we don't drink champagne. And 3000 baht (1500 per person) buys a lot of dinners at family-run eateries, But we went and had a look anyway, you could count the number of people there on one hand. There was a cooked ham and a side of baked salmon sitting in direct sun for HOURS. And there you have another reason why we are not fans of the buffet! The breakfast was a really high standard. The coffee was excellent. Really great omelettes, nice cheeses - including fetta, which I've never had in Thailand before - and hot food, although sometimes the hot food was cold!

We really liked Choeng Mon Beach and the general area. There are so many great restaurants close by and the massage place across the road from the lobby (it has green leaf decals on the front window) is possibly the cleanest, coolest and most comfortable massage place we've ever visited in our 9 trips to Thailand. We had some great massages and I had a very professional OPI mani-pedi for 400 baht.

Despite our unpleasant experience with certain guest behaviour we had a really amazing stay here. It's a very good resort with potential to be excellent. It won't suit every traveller though so hopefully this review will help you decide whether 'you should be here'.

My new husband and I are just back from a fantastic stay at the Bay Water resort. From the second we arrived we felt extremely welcome. The staff are absolutely brilliant, the general manager Abdallah greeted us on our arrival and we were upgraded to a villa with a pool which was perfect! During our stay Abdallah and the front of house manager Woody organised a fantastic romantic meal surrounded by candles in the pool area, compliments of them. They also took a photograph of us on arrival and gave us a beautiful hand made photo frame. They delivered a gorgeous bouquet of flowers to our room for our honeymoon. Woody also very kindly allowed us to borrow his car to tour some of koh Samui, something which is above and beyond the call of duty. The food was excellent and Joseph the head chef was always interested in customer feed back. I would absolutely, 100% recommend this hotel for anyone's holiday. Scott and I just hope we will be able to return there in the not to distant future. Thanks again for helping to make our honeymoon unforgettable and well done for such a fantastic team of staff!

Scott and Karen

Stayed here for 4 nights at the beginning of trip to all Samui. The price was quite cheap, room large and airy, but they didn’t have a room ready when I checked in at 10pm and accidentally took me to a room that hadn’t been cleaned.. had to wait a while for this to be rectified. Lots of breakfast options but coffee wasn’t very nice and no dairy free milk (I never expect this, it’s just nice to have). Pool area is big, but the staff don’t attend to guests at the pool. Towels are left out all day without being tidied. Overall good clean place but the whole hotel is a little tired and rundown. Local is a bit slower and not as buzzing either, but not too bad if you’re on a budget.

My husband and I stayed for one night as the hotel is located fairly close to the airport. The pictures online must be from years ago, because they are deceiving and the hotel is in a state of decay. The positives were that our room was quite spacious and clean, and the hotel provided a free shuttle service to the airport but that’s where it ends. The staff seem very disinterested in their jobs. We caught the front desk sleeping staff sleeping on the job and had to wake them up, so that was interesting. They were not very helpful and seemed annoyed when answering simple questions. The bell boy and the shuttle driver were lovely however. The area around the pool is a hazard. The floor boards are decaying and loose and I felt like I was going to trip or fall through. The pool, was decent enough, however it is definitely showing it’s age. It looks like management has made no effort to up keep the property as it’s falling apart. The pool bar looks like it hasn’t been used in years and was flooded and the water features and ponds are all murky and decrepit. The phone and TV in our room didn’t work and the wifi was basically non existent. The doors are very thin so we could hear everything that was happening outside, and in the middle of the night our safe starting beeping and woke us up and it took awhile for me to figure out how to make it stop. The bed was also extremely uncomfortable. When we went to check out it was early in the morning and there was absolutely no lighting, so trying to get to the lobby I actually had to use the flashlight on my phone. I would not recommend this place, which is a shame because it looks like it has so much potential but there is really a lack of care.

We had no water from the moment we arrived. We stayed there for 2 days without running water. Staff kept promising that water would come in an hour, this went on for 3 days. Rude staff at reception and at the restaurant. Never experienced such terrible non existent management. Manager at hotel was no where to be found he vanished amid the chaos! Everyone started demanding refunds and checking out. It was a mass exodus. Do not stay here!!! You will regret it!! Likely hotel will close down in coming days...

The good :
The rooms are clean
The rooms are big
The AC is very silent
The internet connection is decent
Relatively close to the beach

The bad:
The local staff english is very poor so i often had to correct or ask again when needing anything
I tried to have diner in the hotel restaurant. The bisque smelled so off that i didnt touch the fish it was covering, only ate the garnish. Breakfast offers a decent choice but low quality: lipton yellow and chewy croissants

The evil:
This place is not finished and still feels very much under construction. No ambiance, no feeling-special-touch. The room s furniture is minimalist
The price for this standard is way too heigh and the only reason i stayed an extra night is because i couldnt be bothered packing my staff again but i checked and there is much better value for money in the perpendicular street...

All in all, not terrible but not amazing either

The private pool villas do not look like on the fancy pictures in the internet, although they have a "private" pool they all face a dirty pond, which actually doesn't want you to make use of the private pool (see attached pictures). Garden area is also maintained poorly. We had to change room as most of the private pool villas face a pub/club with loud music until 0200 in the morning. Garden is also maintained very poorly. Wifi doesn't work properly, staff not interested in fixing it.

Locations is good, rooms are clean, breakfast is OK, free coffee pads machines on the rooms are nice, pool is ok as well.

So, where do we start???

The photography of this place clearly dates back some time. It now has an air of dereliction. Poorly maintained throughout.

The communal areas have the feel of a prison block or municipal car park block from the 1970's.

The room itself was OK, nice enough bathroom but with a weird sporadically spurting tap in the basin. The safe was broken but was fixed by the hotel.

We had booked a way ahead and had requested an additional bed for our daughter. There was none in the room on check-in. Only 2 towels (frayed and worn) instead of the 3 required. There was no information in the room about the area or the hotel.

The breakfast was poor and offered little that actually felt fresh or interesting.

The staff seemed totally disinterested and were almost keen to stay out of the way to avoid doing anything. The management hid in a room at the back of reception and were never on hand to deal with issues that arose and there were plenty.

Wifi was patchy at best.

Having stayed at Baywater four years ago we were bitterly disappointed in how the Resort has deteriorated. It has no management, staff who do not understand English, grounds a rooms are in a dilapidated state. Breakfast disgraceful no welcome no hello no service no leadership. There was no water for two days running before we demanded a refund and checked out early. It will take a lot of work to get us or other guest to return to Baywater Resort. A bitter dissapointment as it had so much potential.

Hello the swimming pool is not so longer it’s just for relax. I’m sure that it is not longer than 15mts because you have your private site and you can swim for all the pool but if there is more people so you can’t use it all.
