This is quite an old hotel and the interior reflects this. Arrival is easy - there's an unloading zone in front of the hotel where you can park the car for a few minutes. After that, it's a short drive to the parking which is easily accessible on foot from the hotel.

My room also reflected the age of the hotel, with very high ceilings and a classy, squeaking interior. I rather like this kind of room, bur some people might prefer a plain, modern interior.

The downside from the room was the view on an alley and the office building a few meters from the window. Having booked a comfort room I would have expected something better than that.

Upon my request I was offered another room but that was in the attic with windows viewing the sky rather than the street so I stayed with what I had.

The room did have a fridge and internet was fast enough.

Breakfast was good with very friendly service.

Apart from the view, this was definitely a food experience.

The property is located in the center of Graz, from where you can start visiting the city far and wide on foot. The city deserves to be visited. All the most important attractions are close to the hotel as well as many typical places where you can eat well. If you want to get away from the centre, there is a very organized tram and bus line. If you have to stay for several days, parking in the center is crazy expensive, as are hotel parking. We parked in a free P+R 4 km from the center with the bus stop a few meters away which took us to the centre. They pass every 10 minutes. The Palais hotel Erzherzog Johann may seem ancient and old, but it has a good organisation, large and welcoming rooms, good cleanliness and an excellent breakfast. We liked everything, even the cold but precise welcome from the staff.

The hotel is in the centre of the old town. It is very close to the main attractions and tram links. The atrium is spectacular as cascades of plants hang over the railings. The hotel itself has an interesting history (Palais) and this is reflected in the generous size of the rooms with the high ceilings. There was a good choice of breakfast items and the view of the greenery looking upwards added to the ambience. The beds were extremely comfortable the bathroom well appointed and spotless, as was the room. It was also good value for money.

Although this hotel certainly does have old world charm, it also comes with old world inconveniences, such as a bed that sags toward the middle, floors that screech and squeak in pain as you walk to the bathroom, curtains hung back to front and a bathroom that was smaller than the bathroom in a single room apartment we once rented.

I failed to see what was four star about a hotel with stained walls and grout in the bathroom, other than its location to the main square in Graz.

Breakfast was a plain, hospital fare (although they had a nice selection of juice) and the service was for the most part friendly.

All we wanted was clean, comfortable, and the kind of breakfast buffet that excites you to get up before the other guests to get in first: what we got was grubby, uncomfortable and the understanding that four stars on a website doesn't equal a four star stay.

Dear guest, Thank you for your visit and taking the time to review our property. We are very sorry that you were not completely satisfied with your stay. We are very proud of the antiques and original parquet floors with which our rooms are partly equipped. Unfortunately these original parquet floors cause noises. We are also in the process of renovating some of the bathrooms. Nevertheless, we are pleased that you mention our service staff positively. Once again, we are sorry that we have not met your expectations, maybe we will still get the opportunity to welcome you again and convince you of our qualities. Best regards from Graz Your team of Palais Hotel Erzherzog

My stay at the Erzherzog Johann, which bills itself as a 4-star hotel ("at €21 for breakfast, we are the cheapest of all 4-star hotels in Graz!" - incorrectly briefed, sorry...) was a complete disappointment. First I was given a room that wasn't cleaned (4 women at the reception at the same time, logistics zero!) I was then assigned room 220, which was "not yet renovated" and which you weren't even allowed to show to any guest (see photos !). What you don't see in the photos was a mattress that was completely worn out and you fell into a pit! The next morning I asked for another renovated room (apology from the receptionist: "We can't renovate all the rooms at the same time, only piecemeal!") which was assigned to me (room 207). And lo and behold - the room wasn't cleaned again!! After the cleaning I was allowed to move into it. The only thing that was really renovated was the bathroom, but the hairdryer was broken! This was then removed from the wall the next morning, no replacement device was provided and the maid also forgot to empty the garbage. The crowning glory is the fact that the hotel server blocks a whole range of sites (including CyberGhost as a VPN connection!). We are talking about a 4 star hotel that was once Graz's flagship hotel!! All I can say to the management of the hotel: The fish starts to stink at the head!
Next time it will definitely be a different hotel - sorry, the shabby Archduke has gambled away, he deserves a 2 star deduction!

Excellent location. We had booked two rooms and were given rooms on the same floor but in opposite directions. The check in staff ( both ladies) at the counter require training on politeness given that they are working in the hospitality sector. The body language of the bespectacled lady at check in was bad from the minute go. I understand that the hotel was fully booked and we were okay to be the allocated rooms but the way we were treated at check in is not befitting of a hotel such as this.

Dear Tamanna, it is nice to hear that you enjoyed the central location, but the rest of the review is quite disappointing, especially for our staff members who tried to accommodate your wishes as much as possible. We are so sorry that you felt not welcomed at check in, the friendliness of our staff is otherwise always perceived as very positive. As you mentioned, we allocated the booked rooms in the same floor but in opposite directions. After you have seen the rooms, you came back to reception and asked to change rooms, however, due to the high occupancy we were not able to change rooms. According to your reaction, the reception team felt that you had no understanding that the hotel was fully booked. Best regards Natascha Tschiltsch Hotel Manager

Great location, right in the center, 5 minutes from all major attractions. Well-kept hotel, friendly staff, good breakfast (although not stocked in terms of desserts, excellent instead the salty part).
We stayed one night in a suite and the price was very competitive. This overrides shortcomings that a 4-star hotel suite should not have.
Bathrobes and slippers absent, bathtub without curtain / glass so impossible to shower, lack of blackout curtains in the rooms (those present are not enough), second bed made from a sofa bed, with creaking springs. If a person has sleep read wakes up with every movement. There is no courtesy light for those sleeping in the sofa bed and the light switches present are not within reach. Mini bar present, although not stocked. The wardrobe is only present in the living area, but it is missing in the bedroom where a person usually changes given the proximity of the bathroom.
Bathroom without window and the toilet is inside the bathroom, closed by another door in a really tiny space.

However for the really competitive price, you can sleep in a suite and the shortcomings can also be left out. Would stay again.

We just checked in and the reception was the most distatsteful and unfriendly ever by two check in staff that seem to not like their job.Being a seasoned traveller since over 30 years I was shocked at the Unusual ,curt and smile less welcome that we received.Such a good location and such poorly trained and impolite staff.I am a travel agent and also member of the Reiseleiter Akademie and shall definitely take this matter further.

Dear Mag. Malik, thank you for the review. We regret very much that you had such bad experience at check in. As you a travel agent you might know that it is always helpful to disclose more details about negative experience. This is the only way we can improve our service. In this case, we can only assume that you were not satisfied with the allocated rooms, as they were on the same floor but opposite directions. However, as you mentioned that you would like take this matter further, you are more than welcome to get in touch with our hotel manager. Best regards Your team of Palais Hotel Erzherzog Johann

Hotel location cannot be beat in the city center. Room was comfortable and breakfast was plentiful. The only issue we had was our room 317 in the rear of the hotel was directly over an Irish pub. With the new no-smoking rules in indoor spaces the pub dwellers would come outside to smoke until the early morning and were extremely loud and made it difficult to sleep.

If you choose to stay here don’t accept a room in the back of the hotel.

Dear guest, thank you for your stay and the review. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us. Due to our excellent inner-city location, street noise from passers-by or suppliers of neighbouring businesses can unfortunately not be completely avoided. However, we are always endeavouring to ensure a pleasant stay with the help of soundproof windows. Best regards from Graz, your team of Palais Hotel Erzherzog Johann

The interior design is outstanding, it truly feels like a place. Not all rooms are the same, but there are special rooms (for example the Archduke Maximillian room) which are incredible. The place is spotless clean, internet is very good, the bed and pillows are perfect. Location is in the main square of the old city, hard to find a better spot. Overall it feels like you are in the Sound of Music. Staff was great, especially Daniela Demmel who understands guest and their needs and immediately finds a solution for every need. Loved the experience and highly recommend the hotel.
