It is reached by tram 1 line, which runs near the hauptbahnhof, through the main town and out to the outskirts of Graz to its final stop (Mariatrost). The hotel is located on top of the nearby hill behind the Basilica. The stairs (217 of them) leading up to the basilica and hotel can be just about be seen from the tram stop. We walked up with our bags the first day so it is doable but certainly strenuous. We left fitter than when we arrived. An 11.20 Euro 7-day public transport pass (obtainable from tobacco kiosks and the like) quickly becomes worthwhile if you are staying more than three days.
The hotel was very quiet (neighbours are the basilica and a graveyard). Our non-smoking room showed no residual cigarette smell (even though there was still an ashtray mounted on wall in bathroom). The rooms were large and comfortable. The housekeeping was good and the room was clean. The breakfast, included in our rate, had a good variety and quality. The free wired internet was reliable and relatively fast (they provide a cable if you need one). There was also a wifi signal that worked fine in our room but since they don't mention it I am assuming it doesn't cover whole hotel.
The bathroom was a little tired with the grouting around the bath/shower stained dark but no musty smells. One problem with the bathroom was there was no ventilation in the completely windowless room. This meant smells and moisture lingered for hours. The other problem with the bathroom was the glass screen for the bath/shower was a three panelled folding glass arrangement that you could position along the edge of bath. There was no way to keep this in place and with the position of the shower head being mid-bath it was difficult to shower without flooding the bathroom.
although the hotel is not in the center of graz, its not a big deal to drive with your car to the city center, we made it every day in about 10 minutes. there is a tram nearby who rings u to the center in about 30 minutes as well if u dont want to use your car.
the fact that this hotel is placed in the outskirts of the city, we were actually able to open our window during the night and the only "noise" we heard were the birds in the morning singing and waking us up gently... we felt like in paradise..!
there is an impressive pilgrimage church just a few feet away, lots of parking space and a wonderful restaurant in the hotel! a huge "beer garden" with old chestnut trees where they serve great local dishes. the serv ice is kind and all employees are devoted to make u feel well....rooms are wonderful, we got upgraded from a standard to a superior room since we stayed 4 nights! the inoluded buffet breakfast is great as well! Free of charge high speed internet in rooms or in the lobby are nice touches as well, since back home in the US even huge hotels with very high rates charge for that!
cant wait to get back!
The room was very nice, the breakfast was wonderful.
I wish this hotel all the best!
The outdoor eating area was pleasant, and the menu was good with lots of local dishes on offer, but as we were not Austrian we received very poor customer service from the waiting staff.
The breakfast room decor matched the bedroom - shabby, and the breakfast choices were minimal - and what there was was of poor quality.
This hotel is not a good representation of other Austrian hotels we have stayed at.
The church next door is a pilgrim destination and worth a visit. The beds were amazingly comfortable and room quite. Also clean!
Staff really friendly! Breakfast Buffett was well rounded with fresh bread rolls fruit...,.
Will be back!
Large well-kept rooms, private parking, good breakfast. There is no lift, but I'm sure that the personnel would help anyone with their luggage. There is no aircon in the room, but the temperature is not really too high up on that hill even in summer.
All staff were great, especially Elena handling the breakfast room.
