Detailed Reviews
I was just in Graz for the European Figure Skating Championships and a friend booked us in this hotel for the duration of the event. While the charm was not lost on me (quaint, former hospital, walking street), that’s where it ended. Who still uses keys in hotels? No laundry service and no attempt to help in that regard. I had a “suite” and the sofa was pulled apart to make two (unneeded) beds, making it impossible to watch the TV in the room. The breakfast was very nice, rooms were warm and clean. If you’re on a budget, you’ll probably like this place. If you’re used to modern conveniences, nope.

The hotel is in the pedestrian area but has a convenient underground car park a few dozen meters away. Slightly dated as a structure, it is however clean and comfortable. Unfortunately from the street you can hear the rude customers of the bars who disturb you until late at night.

Hotel in a strategic position, excellent agreement with the nearby car park. Clean, comfortable in the pedestrian area, standard breakfast. Dated furnishings and rooms. You pay for the excellent location of the hotel. All the main attractions of the city can be reached on foot

I agree with the fellow before me.
I paid for a superior double bed room and I was given a tiny corner bed a teenager would have trouble sleeping in. See pictures attached.
The gal at the reception said there are no other rooms available so I was kind of forced staying here.
It was 8 pm on September 5, just now. Can't even open the window, very noisy, the room is facing the pedestrian and pubs area.
Room is dated, old carpets and furniture, stinky smell of tabacco.
There is no AC. I asked for a fan but the hotel doesn't have any.
No shower stall, just a bathtub with a hand-held shower head. Old and not practical,
The receptions was not helpful at all, too busy kissing her boyfriend in front of me and another customer. Very unprofessional.
Do yourself a favor and book somewhere else. This will disappoint you.
I am a heavy traveler and I must say this is one of the worst accommodations in my entire life.

Absolutely not recommended. Unless you are the last guest to leave the pub opposite at 4:00, the hotel is absolutely not suitable as a place to sleep. Until 4:00 in the morning, noisy hordes drive you crazy right outside the window, and from 6:00 onwards, loud trucks from Broll and Eskimo... The hotel is aware of the problem, they say you are in a city and there are only a few quiet rooms, and there is nothing they can do about it... In that case, I would recommend locking the hotel, soundproofing measures or security guards to chase away noisy people from outside the hotel...

While Graz may not be on everyone’s list, it’s a convenient stopover for anyone headed to Vienna from former Yugoslav territories. Great location in the center of the old town, with easy parking nearby, spacious, clean and charming rooms, a knowledgeable and helpful staff. Breakfast is available and no need to preorder.

Last May/June, I spent a month in Graz, during one of the busiest tourist seasons ever. I had lived in Graz for two years in the past and had definite ideas about where I wanted to stay. Ultimately, however, the hotels I wanted were already full, so I ended up making reservations at Maria Hilfe based on availability of rooms and the convenient location.I was pleasantly surprised by my experience there.
If you're looking for an American-type hotel, this isn't it, but then, that's not what I'm looking for. The room was plain and some amenities were missing--and some that were there didn't work properly. (Austria is NOT America.) The hotel personnel worked with me to try to accomodate my needs and the woman who cleaned the room was very helpful when I needed something extra. The breakfast was wonderful and the ambiance superb--big windows that overlooked the passage below--the sounds of music and church bells and the hustle and bustle of people were always present (but no traffic noises, since the hotel is in a pedestrian zone). You cannot beat the location--just a few feet from the tram stop, from which you can go anywhere in the city. Or, a short walk across one of the two nearby bridges that lead directly into the center of Graz, which is just across the river from the hotel. The new art museum is adjacent to the hotel. All the restaurants and shops you could want are practically right outside your door.Yes, it was blazing hot, but based on my prior knowledge of living there, my second expedition after arriving was to take the tram down to the Annenpassage and buy a fan from the big electronics store for under $30 (in fact, I think the oscillating fan on a stand was just over $20)--a wonderful investment that kept me completely comfortable during my stay. For the most part, the hotel people were helpful and friendly. I had one terrible experience however. I made a side trip to Romania for a few days and despite having reserved the same room when I returned, I arrived at the hotel after midnight and completely exhausted, only to discover that they had given my room away and had no others! They claimed they always give away rooms when the person with a reservation doesn't show up before 8 PM, and I reminded them that I'd specifically told them I'd be arriving very late. Furthermore, I'd been a guest there for two weeks previous and they had my credit card info on file.
In typical Austrian style, they refused to admit to a mistake and really pissed me off. In the end, they called the Hotel Wiesler nearby and I took a short taxi ride to my new accomodation. The mistake was NOT a language miscommunication because I speak German and English---it was purely a bad policy on their part and one they seemed unwilling to face up to.I ended up going back to the Hotel Mariahilf in the end because I preferred its authentic atmosphere for the remainder of my stay. And eventually, the manager apologized (albeit in the typical stiff-necked way that doesn't really make you feel vindicated). He said he would make an adjustment to my rate because of the mistake, but he never did.To me, this was a really big blot on their hotel, but I still think I'll stay there on my next trip because of the many positives. Maybe next time I'll get something in writing before I go off on a side trip and want to be sure I have a reservation when I return! I recommend Hotel Mariahilf if you want an extremely convenient location in a quiet zone in the middle of the city, but don't go there if you're looking for American-style comfort--to stay there is to enjoy an Austrian experience, not an American one, and that's a big plus for me.

The hotel is old but some rooms/bathrooms are refurbished - not to the highest of standards. It could be a really charming hotel, particularly given its central location in Graz. But - having stayed at the Marihilf with a big family group one night I would definitely not recommend this hotel for the following reasons: Breakfast was advertised until 10, and when people asked for coffee about 10 minutes before 10 they were refused as the 'coffee machine has been cleaned'. But what was really bad is the fact that the really unfriendly waiting staff (of 1) turned the breakfast room lights off promptly at 10. The message being - leave now! Although we could still see, this was really unfriendly. We asked that the lights be put on again but two members of staff refused. No apology was forthcoming until we were checking out and complained - when they began to get a bit nervous. Overall - overpriced for what it is, with unfriendly service.
