We booked the hotel based on the highly recommended and good review given by others tourist.
This hotel is really fantastic, clean and comfortable for us. We have given Aquamarine room for our night stay. This room was large and extremely comfortable.
We're also very happy to recommend it to anyone wanting to stay in Penang Island.

Had a chance to stay one night at Red Chamber room this weekend. From outside this place is not very looked like a hotel, but when took a step inside, it is so charming and nice. The owner(Vivian) is so friendly and always asked us if we needed anything. First class stay for us. Thanks Chymes

I stayed the weekend at Chymes on a friend's recommendation and I absolutely loved the place. The room was massive (I took the blue room), the location was nice and quiet, and it felt super homely. I stayed in one night, and the TV room was so comfortable that I really felt I was at a home away from home.

Unfortunately, the beach wasn't anywhere near as good as I thought it would be.

For starters, there was a squatter living right behind the Chymes perimeter who kept several stray dogs. It is rather unsightly to see a half-naked man eyeballing you for "walking on his property" and sending his dogs after you just because you want to go to the beach.

In the end, we didn't manage to get any beach time.

However, if you're looking for a place to stay and don't care for any beach time, I would highly recommend this place.

Room Tip: Take the blue room if you want a spacious room. It faces the main porch but we didn't find it...

Thank you for your kind review. We are glad that you loved our place. We do understand the condition of the beach outside of our place. However, as it is a public beach, we try our best to keep the area clean. We hope to welcome you back again soon.

The rooms were highly unique with interesting toiletries and good bedding. However the shower gel glass bottles were difficult to use unlike the shampoo bottles, hence potentially breakable.

There was an Indonesian caretaker who took care of everything from room service and breakfast to reception. Though she spoke good English, I had a bad impression of her. When we arrived, she was in the kitchen with a man who had long hair. I rang the service bell on 2 separate ocassions and both times she came out with disheveled hair, in a sleeveless short sleeping dress and visible lingerie. She could not give accurate information on whether there was local food at batu ferringhi.

I felt that our breakfast orders should have been taken the day before. Since it was mentioned that it would be served 8.30-10am, we and another family were waiting at 8.30am. After 10mins I went to the kitchen. Breakfast was not even being cooked yet! After i enquired, the caretaker then came out to take our our orders. We waited 45mins for our meal, which was disappointing bcos when I came downstairs at 7+am, I noted that no one was cooking anything.

The beach was hazardous due to dirty sand, dirty water and stray dogs. We walked 10mins to a cleaner beach, but the water was still dirty and saw a few jellyfish washed ashore.

The tv room downstairs was comfortable and felt like home away fm home.

We would like to put on record that this person did not stay with us as mentioned in the review. And we responded to her email immediately after knowing that her email did not reach us and requested that she re-send her email. Unfortunately, she was not pleased with that. We would want our guests to feel happy staying with us. And since this person claimed that we have affected her travelling mood, we have courteously recommended that she choose another hotel.

Our company had a dinner party and booked the whole hotel for the event. The grounds were spacious enough for us to have various activities. The main selling point of Chymes are its uniquely themed rooms, which are all fabulous to stay in! The house owners have not forgotten to provide the small stuff that are so easily forgotten, such as handphone chargers and stationery. In our excitement we broke one of the glass water containers in the kitchen, and the owners were very gracious about it. Also, I was allowed to borrow two books to read for 3 weeks! It is indeed value for money to stay here, and you are assured of excellent service by its caretakers and owners!

Clean. Spacious. Peaceful. Homely. Do recommend this place. Location isn't very convenient though. It is slightly further away from town and the famous eatery spots. The walk to the beach is a bit dangerous as the area has broken glass and that part of the beach isn't very clean.

Browsing through the photos on Chymes' website, I prepared myself for some disappointment as with most advertised marketing. Besides, the photos online looked too good to be true. But upon reaching, Chymes immediately packed my cynicism away. The living room was so well-furnished and decorated, it was inviting. Chymes offers 6 differently-themed rooms (http://www.chymeshotel.com/). We chose the Studio. If anything, I would say that it looks even better than it does in the photos. Huge, comfortable beds, great lighting, fan, aircon, stereo, and a massive bathroom. I went to peek in the other rooms as well, and goodness they look good too! Slightly smaller than Studio, but the themes are really attractive. There is a lounge available for use, and it has a mahjong table, a TV, and other entertainment sources like boardgames, cards etc. It felt so cosy playing mahjong in the lounge. The owners stayed under the same roof so it was very convenient to reach them.

Chymes is situated very near a bus stop from which you basically can take buses to easily access most of Penang! I wouldn't give so much credit to the bus service, though. And its claimed frequency of 7 minutes :X You can easily find food around the area. The garden opens up to the beach (too bad we did not have time to explore the beach, but it sure is convenient!)

Personally, I felt that Chymes, apart from offering awesome comfort in the form of the rooms, common areas, personalised toiletries etc, offered a personal touch. C.Hun and his family are very helpful and make you feel at home. Special thanks to C.Hun who brought us out to the bus stop personally and waited with us, introducing to us where in Penang is good to visit, and for the great breakfast! (: We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Chymes!

Will definitely be back again :P Save the Studio for us!

Never judge a book by it cover! On the outside, looks like any other beach bungalow. It is on the INSIDE which blows your mind.

We had a hen's weekend and booked the whole house and with 9 girls, we felt totally safe. Chymes helped us do up an event for our Bride to be..a Moroccan style tent with platform and carpets and throw pillows and the works!

The rooms were clean, comfortable and the bed and pillow!!! It's to DIE for!!! LOVE IT!!!

The decor was a mix of east meets west.

The staff was absolutely FANTASTIC. Very friendly, accommodative, attentive and not in your face! They are always smiling and ready to help in ANY way...yet you get all the privacy in the world!

You got to be there to experience it :)

I was here for a wedding held there last weekend and was impressed by the size of the rooms provided here - it was definitely perfect for a wedding or a big family gathering, because the rooms are SPACIOUS. There's a yard at the back of the house should you wish to hold any events or parties.

The only improvement that I can think of would be that there were uncleared stuffs at the garage area (most possibly from previous visitors of the place? IDK), and that it was a bit off the main road so you may need to have a car to drive around. Otherwise, it was lovely indeed.
