We took my parents to the George today planning to treat my Mum (who recently got the all clear from bowel cancer) to lunch in the garden room. As we had to wait we went for a drink in the bar. An exceptionally rude man proceeded to exclaim at my mother why she felt the need to wear a sweater...

We were given a voucher for an overnight stay with dinner and breakfast as a wedding present. On arrival, we found that the management had kindly upgraded us to a junior suite. It quickly became clear that the George's target market is pensioners. The decor is stuck firmly in the 1970s, especially in the bedrooms and the 'garden' dining room....

The George is a very old coaching inn but has lovely public areas and very well appointed bedrooms. The staff could not be more helpful and nothing is too much trouble. We booked the weekend deal which included dinning in the oak panelled dinning room on one evening and breakfast on both mornings. The food is exceptional with a very varied...

Comfortable, good location, but above average cost. Myself and my partner returned to the hotel where we had earlier booked in for the night. We decided to have a drink in the bar before going to our room to change for dinner. The hotel has 2/3bars and we chose a small one which we now know to be the champagne...

Please accept my sincere apologies for being made to feel this way, as of course, it is never our intention at all. Whilst we try and restrict laptops in the bars and lounges it is of course at our discretion and it seems on this occasion it was not dealt with in the way it should have been. I am...

Popped in for a drink. Absolutely beautiful historic place and sat by the huge log fire which was perfect on a cold day. Sumptuous Christmas decorations added to the ambience. However service was slow and overcharged - had medium glasses of wine but charged for large . 4 drinks came to £31.00! Too expensive for what you get.

Very sorry that service was slow and that we overcharged you- I do hope we rectified this for you on the day? Lovely to hear that you enjoyed the ambience of the lounge.

I visited The George for a mid week pre-Christmas break, as usual it was amazing. It is a wonderful traditional Stamford staple. Service is superb by the discreet friendly staff, the rooms are sumptuous, the food delicious (Afternoon tea particularly) and comprehensive wine list. A true haven away from modern life, without a doubt my favorite hotel.

Came here yesterday to meet friends. Afternoon lunch menu was limited but they were very flexible and accommodated one vegetarian with a variety of options. Food was good quality, scones were beautiful and freshly made. Service was good, staff were attentive and helpful. The hotel was happy to accept our dogs in the comfortable sitting room. Would definitely recommend

The George is expensive - there's no getting away from that. However, I think it's worth every penny. We stopped for lunch in the York bar, and wiled away a lovely couple of hours with nothing more than sandwiches, chips and a couple of drinks because we didn't want to leave.

Having just had lunch at the George's oak panelled restaurant, I am left with a feeling of disappointment. The staff were all fantastic, and made every effort to look after you, but the food..... I had the duck (described as half a duck), which arrived as 2 scrawny legs, one of which had barely any meat at all. This was...

Have stayed at the George hotel quite often over the last two years since moving away from Stamford and have always enjoyed it, this time just seemed to have gone off the boil a little, lots and lots of things going on all at once, our rooms were up graded from the ones we had booked so we had two...
