How many old coaching inns on the Great North Road still offer great hospitality and have adapted to the demands of the modern-day traveller or diner? The George at Stamford must be one of the few who can still deliver on all of the above. We stayed over the weekend as a recent birthday treat for me, though it was...

We stayed at the George with some good friends as a send off as they are moving to Australia. We chose the George as we wanted a special evening and we weren't disappointed. The setting is perfect. Downstairs the oak panelling throughout really gives you a feeling that you are stepping back to a time when dining was a proper...

We had booked into the oak panelled restaurant which was a step back in time oak tables and chairs lots of silverware on show quite a statement .The restaurant was busy the service was good ...not great.the food was traditionally English and you get very large portions.the bill was a bit high for out of London.but as I said large...

We ate at the George, oak panelled restaurant, for a birthday celebration recently. It was very disappointing. The standard of cooking was poor and the service rushed and erratic. One of our party has strict dietary requirements, these were explained at the time of booking, and again on the day of our visit. Allergens were presented to her at every...

This hotel is exceptional, with a great mix of old retained features with all modern essentials! This hotel is like going back in time, the service from beginning to end is fantastic. I felt very at home and the staff can't do enough for you! Worth every penny.

We were invited by our very good friend John to join him at the George of Stamford hotel to help him celebrate his 70th birthday. He had often told us about the George and urged us to go as he was sure we wouldn't be disappointed. How right he was! It's not the cheapest place to visit but what you...

I drove for over two hours to meet two good friends at a halfway point between the East and the West of England. I have been to the George many times, but on this rainy spring day was reminded of what beautiful places both Stamford and The George are. Parking up in the rear car park and making the short...

The George serves a wonderful afternoon tea each day. Lovely sandwiches, cakes and scones, all home made. Service is unobtrusive and efficient. Well worth the diversion, just off the A1, now that the Ram Jam Inn is continually closed.

Right, upfront, this has been a favourite of mine for over 20 years. I have stayed there, lunched and dined there, loved the history and the ambience. So why 3 stars? Many of those things which I have loved about this place are still there but you just get the impression that it has become inward looking and is forgetting...

Visited George on Thursday 12 May for a bottle of wine (or 2) and barsnack with husband and 2 friends. We were so surprised to find we were the only 4 people in the lounge at 9.00pm. Never seen so few people at the George. The wine was lovely but thought the barsnack a bit underwhelming. This is the third...
