This is a Great Place To Eat. We eat out a lot and all over the country. So where do I start. The staff here are so helpful and super friendly. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. The setting is warm and cosy or hot and cosy next to the log burner. The food is stunning with ample portions and...

We stayed here for 2 nights this month and had a lovely stay. The hotel is full of rustic charm; creaky & uneven floors and low ceilings. It is just what a 17th century inn should be like. Beds were comfortable. Breakfast was included and set you up for the day. We had a full cooked breakfast each morning (bacon,...

Popped in last night, a very friendly welcome, good service and lovely food - only room for a main course but both risotto and brisket were excellent. Now having to keep talking to get up to 200 characters! Go - it's good - no more needs to be said!

This review is purely about the restaurant side of things. We were staying locally and popped in here for a beer. Having had one we then decided to stay for dinner too. The food was very good and not too expensive and although there was a bit of a wait, we had been warned that there would be. All in...

What a lovely place this is! We were a party of 11 on an Offa's Dyke walking week. The establishment appears to be held together by the VERY efficient Kirsten....she, honestly, seemed to be in charge of EVERYTHING! The room I had was in the annex and rather dark inside...but it had all that one would wish for....except a bath...

two weary Londoners took refuge here for four nights a few weeks back 25th sept. This was a place full of character in the building and the setting. Book lovers paradise and a walkers dream. Foodies keep an eye the food was brilliant, the jazz night was great. The team both front of house and back of house were helpful...

A friend and I stayed here at the start of a three day cycle trip around the Brecon Beacons. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We ate dinner here as well which was most enjoyable. The rooms are a little dated but they are in fitting with the overall ambience of the premises. Bikers beware-if you have you bikes...

We stayed three nights here and it was a nice and welcoming experience. The place is jammed packed full of character, although if you are tall you need to watch for the beams as it's easy to knock yourself out. The room was comfortable, but you had steps down into the en-suite shower room / toilet, which is tricky if...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Nestled within the market town of Hay-on-Wye, this colourful 17th Century Inn exudes historical charm and atmosphere offering quality home-cooked food, luxury accommodation and free Wi-Fi and parking. With parts of the original building dating as far back as the 1300’s, the Hotel subtly blends the elegance and whimsy of the past with the comfort and convenience of the present. Indeed, it is even reputed that Oliver Cromwell once stayed at the inn whilst the Roundheads besieged Hay Castle, which was then a loyalist stronghold. Sympathetically refurbished, exposed timber beams and roaring log fires help to cultivate a homely environment and a famously warm welcome. The Inn features 10 high quality en-suite bedrooms, all of which are individually and tastefully decorated in a style reminiscent of the buildings historic past. All rooms include free Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TV, hairdryer, direct dial telephone and tea & coffee making facilities. They offer a choice of Single, Double, Twin and Superior room options. The Old Black Lion is renowned for the quality of its food and has received a host of rewards and accolades including a coveted AA Rosette. The menus, which are changed frequently, use only the best of British produce wherever possible including locally reared meat, fresh seafood from Cornwall and seasonal vegetables. The oak timbered bar with its scrubbed pine tables and comfy arm chairs is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the fantastic selection of local ales (including their own namesake ‘The Old Black Lion’).The Hotel is located in the heart of the Welsh market town of Hay-on-Wye just a short drive from the A438, it also offers free on-site parking for guests. The city of Hereford is roughly 35 minutes away and offers excellent transport links to the rest of the country. For those flying in, Cardiff International Airport is about a 95 minute journey from the Hotel. The Old Black Lion is situated just a three minute walk from the centre of Hay-on-Wye. Renowned internationally as a Mecca for bibliophiles the town offers over 30 bookshops, many selling specialist and second-hand books. It is also home to the annual Hay Festival, Europe’s premier literature and arts festival. The town lies on the east bank of the River Wye and is within the Brecon Beacons National Park, just north of the Black Mountains. Offering some of the most breathtaking scenery in Wales, the surrounding area is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts with both the Offas Dyke Path and Wye Valley Walk passing through the town. ... more   less
