The Portland Hotel may have seen better days, but last night we overnighted there. My first impression from the outside wasn't good. It is a wonderful building needing a good dose of TLC. But don't be put off! We had a wonderful newly refurbished, bay windowed room. It was spotlessly clean and well equipped with modern TV and drink making... More

There is warm and friendly feel to the building, with a beautifully laid out breakfast room that serves a delicious full english breakfast and a range of cereals and toast. There is also soap and a kettle in all the rooms.

Stayed overnight on 28th October. We were delighted with our newly decorated rooms. The end suit was lovely. All spotlessly clean. Great breakfast too. Very friendly staff. Well worth the money. The town is literally 2 minutes walk away with a host of bars and restaurants. We ate Barbarellas and would highly recommend it.

Was a little apprehensive on arrival as construction is ongoing but the Portland had everything we needed for a 2 day break.breakfast is basic but adequate and the staff are helpful and pleasant.its ideally situated directly opposite the pavilion park and the opera house and a 20 minutes walk from Buxton country park and go ape.would recommend

Came here with reservation due to reading reviews on TripAdvisor but have been very pleasantly surprised. The room is lovely and the en suite is spotlessly clean. Looking forward to a good nights sleep and a good breakfast. Don't know what some people expect for the money! We think it's great value!

The Portland Hotel's approach and interior look tired, and sadly in need of some TLC. There is no dining here, except for a pretty basic breakfast. The bar opens in the evening, though the wine is cheap in quality. Would have preferred the choice of something nicer! One small bottle of water in the rooms, between two of us, for... More

The hotel is opposite the Pavilion Park which is lovely to walk through. WOuld be great for children too with the swimming pool and playgrounds located there. The staff were friendly but not intrusive and our room on the top floor was nice and quiet. There are lots of stairs so not ideal for all. The room was newly refurbished... More

We stayed at the Portland last night lovely staff and great value for the money.was worried what I had read on trip advisor but really was a pleasant stay and would revisit miss Julie finn stockport. Right near the centre in walking distance. Staff very attentive and couldn't do enough for us. Yes rooms are dated. What do people expect... More

We've just returned from 2 nights in Buxton. Booked this hotel on-line but when we arrived we thought either we'd come to the wrong place or we'd been victims of a scam. Approaching from the Macclesfield side of town, the conservatory shown on on-line photos was missing and instead the wall was boarded up. When we went into the hotel... More

Stayed at the Portland Hotel for one night while exploring Buxton and the surrounding area. First impressions count for a lot and in this case the hotel appears tired and even neglected. It appears a new conservatory is to be built from plans in the lobby but at present this is a building site without much progress. My bedroom was... More
