We were allocated a room next to the lift and as we are both light sleepers I called reception to ask to be moved. This was so easy and well taken care of, someone came by the room with a new keycard for the quietest room they had, and directed us where to go. Great start.

The room was clean, well decorated and had plenty of space. Lots of lighting options, big tv and excellent blakout curtains. The bathroom had two sinks and a heated floor - excellent touch!

We briefly visited the spa which was very busy. There was plenty of chairs/loungers though which you don't always get at other places, but I wasn't keen on all the kids splashing around.

Breakfast was good with lots of choice and I particularly liked the allergens labelling, very helpful. Cornflakes were gluten free which we've never seen at any other hotel and we've been to a few! Usually you'd have to ask which means making a bit of a scene and no one wants that at breakfast time.

If I had to give a negative it would be the staff member behaving awkwardly near reception who gave me a card with his name on and asked me to leave a review mentioning that he'd helped me - but he hadn't helped me at all and I didn't need anything! Also, I think all the meekats might be a tad too much. Otherwise, it was a good stay and I would recommend.

If we were ever in the area again and needed a bed for the night, we'd definitely come back to this place. Lovely grounds, interesting history.

We arrived at The Mere a couple of hours early, planning to leave luggage and visit nearby Knutsford. So impressed with very friendly and personal greeting by reception informing us that, as our room was ready we were welcome to check in immediately. Took time to relax and familiarise with The Mere and its setting which is beautiful even at this time of year.

Our (twin/double) room was decorated and equipped to a very high standard with some unexpected extras such as Nespresso machine (as well as usual tea and coffee making facilities) plus super useful 'Suitepad' which I've never seen before. Large, quality TV, luxurious bathroom with underfloor heating. Impressive ceiling lighting too.

Only criticism was; twin single beds were locked together to make (very large) double, causing mild discomfort with a dip in the middle. We accept that this is usual and standard practice.
Our lower ground floor room opened out onto a pleasant lower terrace area which due to time of season was very wet and slippery. A door mat here would have been a good temporary addition. Other than these minor points, we were delighted with the room. Higher floor rooms on this aspect, have the benefit of wonderful views across the mere to the mansions on the other side.

I'm not one to rate fussy afternoon teas but it must be mentioned that this experience at The Mere is positively not to be missed. Sensational selection of assorted finger sandwiches on assorted bread which were enthusiastically explained by the waiter, fresh warm scones with cream & jam, wonderfully prepared selection of pastries and choice of quality teas or coffee with refills on request. Delicious and surprisingly filling. What we couldn't finish was specially boxed to be enjoyed later.

As we had already booked our evening meal in Knutsford town we didn't have dinner in The Mere's Browns Restaurant, although we did look the menu which although very inviting, was quite expensive but would have been offset by the price of our taxi to and from town (over £20) So guests should consider this. We will certainly 'eat in' on our next stay.

Breakfast in Browns was faultless. Again the restaurant staff although very busy, went above and beyond to make everything perfect. Good selection of both continental and English breakfast options. Fresh eggs fried, poached or omelette cooked on demand. Fresh fruit and pastries with selection of teas and coffee.

We would've liked to use the Spa and pool facilities, but time restrictions due to check in and check out times prevented this which was disappointing.

The front of house staff specially reception and restaurant are The Mere's most valuable asset. Thanks for such a pleasant short stay.

Highly recommended especially more than a single night stay....Oh.... and Golf too!

We have just checked out today after a 3 nights stay (a dinner, bed and breakfast offer via Secret Escapes). We stayed in room 109 which was very spacious, well appointed, overlooked the lake, had a small balcony and was tucked away nicely at the end of the corridor.
The COVID controls seemed to be quite well managed by staff, however hardly any of the other guests wore face coverings when moving around the hotel which we did not think was very socially acceptable.
The restaurant didn’t quite live up to the standard of the hotel in quality. The menu was ok, but could have been a little better balanced - there were two fish dishes on the main menu and both included shellfish, so my allergic husband couldn’t have either. The lamb was our favourite choice. We were particularly disappointed with the grilled salmon, which was a tiny finger size portion, over cooked, with 6 chips and one mushroom. Some bread or other suitable nibble on arrival would have been really nice.
The service was very fast on our first evening, just right on the second and unbelievably slow on the last, with some menu choices running out.
A smart/casual evening dress code would have been appreciated, as we were sitting next to people in scruffy tee shirts, shorts, trainers and baseball caps!
The breakfast selection was good.
We did not use the golf course or spa facilities as we wanted to explore the Liverpool area.
Overall we would recommend the hotel and location, but if like us you are not golfers, it does feel like the hotel is an addition to the golf club rather than a good hotel with a golf club.

We visited early August for a nights break but have been left extremely dissapointed as to the poor standrads set by such a reputable hotel.

Rooms seemed clean and no issues were to be found there. Also hand sanitisers all around the hotel. My issues however came in the bar and Restaurant.

Having checked the Mere facebook page it showed all staff wearing PPE (visors and facemasks) and started that all station would be throughly cleaned between customers. This wasnt the case. There were several different members of the Restaurant team on our table serving us with the majority of them not having a face covering at all.

We also asked the bar person to clean a table after use so we could sit there. She grabbed a cloth from the bar and gave it a quick wipe. No sanitisation o'r anything.

AS you will notice on the trip advisor page for the Mere it does State that staff will be placed in full PPE when require and along with the Facebook video you would have thought they followed these procedures - however they don't. I raised this with the hotel and explained that we felt uneasy and felt as if we were lied to - i got told by the general manager that the video is old and that things change! Things havent chnaged, you should still be doing everything to make your environment safe.

Removing the video and false promises might be a good idea.

Dear sionmorgan90, Thank you for your feedback. I am glad that you felt the room was clean and sanitised and that sanitising stations are located around the resort for guest use. Just to clarify that it wasn’t me that you spoke to on the day. The government guidelines are continually changing and we have to adapt our procedures with the advice given. This is why some of the practices have changed from the video. However, safety remains a top priority here on resort and we will review all practices to ensure all team are aware how important it is. We do hope that we can welcome you back to The Mere soon. Kindest regards, Gary Johnson General Manager

So disappointed at our experience this weekend. We go as a family to The Mere once or twice a year as a treat. I understand they are finding their feet with Covid. However from start to finish the experience was poor poor poor. We got there early and we were hungry so ordered 3 omelettes. They were just terrible, the ham looked grey and the eggs were mushy, nearly cooked. Dissatisfied with the late breakfast, we then ordered ordered lunch shortly afterwards and the Cajun wraps were very good. Whilst the bar at lunchtime wasn’t busy at all, they and they had plenty of staff, it was surprising that they kept forgetting our drinks orders or we waited up-to 25 minutes for 4 drinks. My wife ordered a cheesecake and it took at least 40 mins to arrive. Again we just wanted to put the above issues down to the hotel “finding their feet” and we all looked forward to dinner in Browns.
This is where the issues really started. I had the prawn cocktail which was awful. Quick tip guys wash the lettuce 🥬! my son in law and wife had the goats cheese tart, which was dry and bland. My daughter had the tomato 🍅 soup and it was completely tasteless. Ok, still not a major issue but now onto the mains. We all had the rib eye steak, which isn’t hard to do...... how wrong were we. The steaks were tasteless, bland and just awful. The chips were soggy and would be more suited to Wetherspoons!.. only the year before we had triple cooked chips that were all nicely stacked, these were obviously ovens chips undercooked. I did try to defend the restaurant at this point, but as my son in law said ‘A potato is a potato’ how does the lockdown affect it!? Who exactly pays £28 each for an awful steak with oven chips??? Also my son in law and i LOVE espresso martinis 🍸. We had one and it was awful. Watery and tasteless, just tasted like cold coffee. To be fair to the Mere, we spoke to the Ops Manager, Paul and explained our issues, he replaces the martinis free, but they were no better. His parting comment was come and find me at breakfast and we will have another chat. In hindsight, should he not of sought us out, rather than us going to find him. Overall, cleanliness was a 4/5, service at the front desk 5/5 but after spending over £950 for a night for 2 room DBB the overall experience would be a 1/5. We won’t return to the Mere anytime soon, which I’m really sorry to say but there wasn’t a valid reason given for the issues.

We visited on 24th August for a golf break but left extremely disappointed
On arrival they couldn't find our booking (no warm welcome); we also informed reception that one of our party was unable to attend due to family illness, the reply from reception was you will need to pay a single occupancy fee (which was not the case as we had booked through a third party & already paid). On returning from our golf game (course was not in tip top condition) we booked in and asked about using the spa facilities for half an hour, we were told it was full but offered spaces if we paid an additional £10 each (so it was not full then). It is a shame that quality of service has dropped massively as a consequence of greed at this difficult time. So we decided to have drinks outside but found the table very close together and tables which had not been cleared, we asked the bar person to clean the table after use so that we could sit down. No sanitation fluid used just a quick wipe.
In saying all that the rooms were amazing clean and look like they had been cleaned spotlessly and sealed. Yet again at dinner they couldn't find our booking and were unaware of our supplements. Check out was the same no pleasantries, just pay the bill.
I was hoping to return again to this hotel with our holiday golf club society but having experienced an unpleasant customer service at premium prices it is very unlikely. Staff need support and training in welcoming guests, attentiveness, professionalism and Covid.

My wife and I stayed here for the weekend and will never stay again.
We checked into our room, which had a "sanitized" seal across the door, we assumed by having this seal across the door our room would be lovely and clean. How silly of us to think that!
When we unpacked our suitcase we went to put our clothes in the wardrobe, upon opening the wardrobe I found 1 slipper...yes, 1 slipper! We kind of laughed this off as an oversight by housekeeping but when we opened the other wardrobe, we found 2 dressing gowns screwed up on the shelf. Again, we thought it was another oversight by housekeeping. We hung the dressing gowns up in the bathroom and it was at that point we noticed 1 of the dressing gowns was covered in fake tan and had black hairs around the collar.
We were absolutely astounded that during a global pandemic, when hygiene standards are of upmost importance something of this nature could be overlooked.
We took 1 of the dirty robes to reception to complain. The Manager expressed his regret over such an incident and said this was not acceptable, which we agreed. He suggested that his team would go into our room to sanitize it once again and remove anything that shouldn't be there. He also offered us a bottle of wine on the house and he would have housekeeping leave it in our room for us as we were going out for tea and drinks. He also said he would like to have another meeting with us in the morning to discuss the matter further.
We returned later that evening and never even thought to check/inspect if our room had been sanitized as agreed with the Manager earlier on.
The next morning we checked the wardrobes again and found 2 pairs of slippers and 2 dressing gowns left in sealed bags. This is what we expected upon arrival. When we opened the 2nd wardrobe, we were horrified to find the 2nd dirty dressing gown screwed up and left on the shelf.
We decided to speak to the Manager again but when we asked at reception if we could speak to him they replied he wasn't on site today as it's his day off. We were a little shocked at this as he had said the day before that he wanted a meeting with us. Reception said they would get the Manager to phone us asap to discuss our complaints. We never received a phone call from him or anyone at Mere. We then decided to email Gary Johnson with our concerns and to highlight how dirty our room was. We asked for a reply within 7 days...10 days later and we've still not had a response. I find it hard to believe that a hotel of this stature can operate like this. I don't expect a tin pot b and b in blackpool to leave dirty laundry in my room and find it incredible that a hotel like Mere should think this is ok. Customer service is shocking and the cleanliness is even worse. Never will I stay at this hotel.

My husband and I did the weekday spa getaway recently for my 30th birthday..it did not disappoint! A fabulous massage, followed by full use of the health and spa facilities 😊 Our room was lovely (club room), spacious and clean with a big comfy bed! We were impressed with the tablet in the room which you can use to order room service etc...what a great idea!

Upon booking, the hotel asked if this was for a special occasion and my husband informed them it was my 30th birthday. Upon check-in there was a birthday card waiting in the room for me Which I thought was a nice touch 😊 We had a meal in Browns restaurant in the evening (the £60 meal allowance in the package covered the food so we only paid for drinks :-)) We were greeted by a lovely waiter who wished me a happy birthday. The restaurant looks so different in the evening like you are in a 5 star restaurant, it was lovely and the perfect setting for a romantic meal 😊 The food was absolutely delicious..I can highly recommend the Mere Chicken pie 😍 Before we ordered dessert the waiter brought a complimentary dessert with Happy Birthday written on the plate...I loved this!

Our package also included breakfast and we both indulged in the full English breakfast buffet which was lovely.
Thank you to all at Team Mere for helping to make my birthday special. All the staff we came in to contact with were friendly and helpful. This was our first visit to the Mere, we can't wait for the next one 😊

I stayed at the Mere some time ago on a work Christmas event and it was fabulous so I had no hesitation in returning and recommending it to my cousin, for a special stay for my son's wedding earlier this month.

I cannot even begin to express how disappointed I was with my stay there.
To begin with, when I was settling into my room, despite their apparent deep cleaning/fogging of the rooms between guests there was a previous guest's false eyelash on the floor next to the table below the mirror in the bedroom. When I mentioned this to one of the staff, they asked me if I'd like it removing! I was absolutely aghast. That question should never have even been asked, there should have simply been an apology and an immediate message to Housekeeping to re-clean the room. Far from a deep clean, it hadn't even had a thorough vacuuming.

Secondly, I was deeply unimpressed, having paid £235/night for my room, that there was an extra charge to use the spa. I completely understand paying for treatments but just to use the facilities already there is completely unacceptable. Granted when I mentioned this on checkout, this was removed from my bill but had I not said anything it would have stood.

I was also very disappointed with breakfast. At a hotel that sets itself to be exclusive, I would have expected a breakfast menu with various options, with breakfast cooked to order, and brought to the table, not a self service buffet with the food left out and even having to make your own toast. I really don't think you can have one COVID policy for the rooms (which failed anyway) and pretty much no COVID policy for the restaurant with food out for anyone to cough & sneeze over and many hands touching the toaster and bread.

The final straw, when we returned from my son's wedding in the evening, was to find the rooms unmade (and the aforementioned false eyelashes still there), used cups from the previous evening and that morning still by the kettle and no replenishment of tea, hot chocolate etc. Both myself and my cousin had to phone and request some more. And yes, there was a small card in the room with some of this information on, but not everyone reads every bit of information in a hotel room and it was not mentioned to us on check in and as I have said earlier, if the reason for not making up the room for the same guest was COVID based, then the cleaning of the room prior to my arrival was poor to say the least anyway.

All the little touches that I would have expected from a hotel supposedly of this calibre and price were missing. For instance the tea tray in the room - cheap tea and hot chocolate instead of an upmarket brand. And I had mentioned on my booking that I am coeliac - would it have been so difficult to have put some gluten free biscuits in my room instead of two packets of ones I couldn't even eat?

I finally managed to speak to the hotel today having received no response from them since I emailed and was told by Natalie who deals with customer feedback, that she had been instructed by the General Manager not to respond to my email or my call. How can a hotel refuse to respond to a legitimate customer complaint?

In summary, my stay at the Mere offered me nothing I couldn't have got from a Premier Inn at a third of the price. Just dreadful.

I attended with my partner for our anniversary/Valentine’s Day. I had booked the valentines deal along with many other couples. I was really disappointed.

Before we were even asked for our names to check in the receptionist asked for our card - there was no welcome, how was your journey, nothing!

We booked into the spa which needs serious improvement, a good lick of paint required and with outdoor garden furniture at the side of the pool which was just so inappropriate as they remained wet all day.

For the evening meal (which was its only saving grace food wise) was ruined by children screaming through the entrance ( the reception area is pretty much the restaurant). The child then began playing the piano and I had to complain for someone to even say something. We had to ask for drinks several times bad instead of checking on the drink which had not arrived they kept adding things to the bill as if we were just asking for more. Couples around us were failed to be served and even went back to their rooms without food.

I have feedback the next morning and left my number but no one called back. I don’t think I’d ever go back which is a real shame as it could have been a lovely place. Just doesn’t look like anyone took any pride in the place or cared that their customers were having a nice time, which in my view is just a simple requirement when providing a service.

Hi Nicolalouise17, Unfortunately with the social distancing still in place and the reduced capacity that is allowed in the spa we can no longer offer spa access to hotel guests however you can pay £20 per hour to use the pool facilities or if you book a 55 minute spa treatment you get 1 hour complimentary use of the pool.
