This a traditional, old fashioned and privately owned hotel in a beautiful part of the country. The rooms are lovely, well designed and in general the food at the restaurant is excellent. Any criticisms? Well perhaps it's a bit frayed around the edges and lacks levels of the investment you'd expect from some of the main hotel groups, however the... More

The Tufton Arms Hotel is an individually owned hotel set at the bottom end of Boroughgate right in the heart of the very attractive small town of Appleby-in-Westmorland. This is a comfortable, old-fashioned (in a quaint way) traditional provincial hotel with all the quirks and charms which can only come from establishments that don't belong to a chain of businesses.... Lovely quaint hotel set in the centre of Appleby, one of the prettiest liitle towns in Cumbria. Pleasantly surprised at the size, quality and comfort of our room (No 7) and the excellent breakfast which was full English cooked to order. Not a venue for those seeking clubs, music or a busy night-life .. but an ideal hotel for a... More

My wife and I have just returned from 2 nights at the Tufton Arms. Before arriving I was a little apprehensive having read some of the reviews on tripadvisor but there was no need to be. My wife had received 'A Gift in a Box' voucher and we decided to upgrade for an additional £20 per evening to a superior... More

Stayed for one night on the way to Scotland and booked direct . On arrival we parked right outside in the square and went into a side door marked reception , not very appealing and the gents toilet as soon as you opened door ! What have we done ? We turned the corner and there was a lovely reception... More

My wife and I managed to get a night away from the family at the Tufton Arms. We had a really good stay. The hotel is very far from modern but is very traditional looking. If you want the stark cleanliness of a travel lodge or the like this is not for you but if you want charm and tradition... More

We stayed with a buyagift voucher and had a very pleasant stay! The hotel was very welcoming and quite unique with a lovely victorian feel. We relaxed in the sitting room in the evening with drinks from the bar. There are some other pubs and restaurants very nearby to the hotel. A very nice stay!

Myself and my wife recently stayed at this hotel using a Buy A Gift 2-night hotel break voucher that we had had bought for us as a Christmas present. The hotel accepted our booking, then let us amend it when we couldn't travel on our initial dates due to a sudden illness, which we were quite impressed with. BUT at... More

I am sorry that you objected to being charged an extra £20 to stay on a Saturday night. It is not a surcharge or sneaky, your voucher will have stated clearly that they are redeemable from Sunday to Thursday, it would not be unreasonable to expect an extra charge for staying at the weekend. I apologised at the time for... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Nestled in the medieval town of Appleby, just outside the Lake District and 15 minutes from the M6, this intimate family-run hotel offers excellent food, in its relaxed newly refurbished bar areas and in the Conservatory Restaurant. We are a fish restaurant and have developed an enviable reputation for dishes such as Gumbo's, Chowders, Goan Fish curries, Fresh Mussels (3 different ways), Cajun Prawns and Calamari, and our constantly changing fish specials all fresh daily from Neves in Fleetwood. We still have our traditional sources of great beef and Cumbrian lamb on a grill menu so meat eaters are not left out! Originally a 16th Century coaching inn, it was rebuilt in the Victorian times and is now a Grade II listed building. It blends both the contemporary and the classical creating an atmosphere that reflects the traditional charms of the past as well as the sophisticated elegance of the present. With stylish soft furnishings, heaped cushions, deep sofas, polished wooden floors and open fires its homely comforts are further completed by warm and friendly hospitality and free wi-fi. Each of the 22 en-suite guestrooms are individually furnished and decorated. Beautifully appointed they offer all the necessary modern comforts and luxuries one would expect from a hotel of this calibre. Guests can choose from a range of different accommodation options including Single, Classic Double and Family options. For those special occasions they also offer Luxury Double rooms and spacious Suites. ... more   less
