Booked a B&B in Bordeaux having never been there before. Drove up to the address on the GPS and almost began to cry as it was the furthest thing from what I imagined a Bordeaux B&B would be - on a grimy street 2 blocks from the train station. My husband got online and found Chateau Bellevue on Tripadvisor. We called Petra and were immediately welcomed to stay with her for 2 nights despite one hour's notice. Upon arrival, my husband and I had our breath taken away. The chateau was a fairy tale. Petra showed us a choice of 2 rooms and we chose the top floor room overlooking the Gironde valley. She offered us a bottle of wine, recommendations for dinner and excursions and booked us a wine tour the next day. The chateau itself has been renovated and updated beautifully and we wanted for nothing. Freida and Cuno, the resident dogs were charming and entertaining. We will definitely be back.

This place was absolutely beautiful! The serene surroundings (views of the Gironde, pool, decor) made for a lovely stay. We were there 3 nights of our 3 week trip of France. Breakfast was scrumptous each morning. Everything was neat and clean. We did not encounter any issues like the previous reviewer stated, but then we were not expecting to be catered to, either. This is not a hotel with a staff - it is an intimate B&B. We were given the "keys to the castle" to come and go as we pleased. We bought local wine, which we enjoyed out on the terrace each night.

Coming from the airport to the chateau is maybe not so wise, since it is a long trip, as the chateau is out in the country. Thanks to Petra, Theresa, and Andrea, who were quite helpful in letting us know where we could find restaurants, wine, and site-seeing locations in the area. Cuno and Frida (the 4-legged hosts) greeted us, and added to the ambiance of our stay.

I've been everywhere, man, and this was the most astonishing experience of my life. Live like a French king with the delicious meals prepared by the owner, the artist Petra Dick. The views across the Gironde estuary are beyond belief. The interior has been restored to the most impeccable standards by architects briefed to reproduce the beauty of Versailles and Notre Dame. If you can afford it, and the prices are ridiculously reasonable, visit Chateau Bellevue before you die.

I apologize for taking so long to post this review, but it took this long to work out the final details.

This chateau has a wonderful drive-up appeal. It is beautiful overlooking the vineyards. Petra met us and showed us our room, but was very rushed as she had errands to run. We settled in and explored the grounds. The two dogs are nice, but the terrier will steal things from your room. We had a time trying to get my son’s shoe back from him.

The chateau has been renovated completely. It is in tip-top shape. Unfortunately, all of the details have been covered up with the white-on-white color scheme. The artwork is quite vivid, and in my mind detracts from the chateau. But, everyone has different tastes. The furnishings are tastefully done and elegant. Wi-fi seemed only to work in the downstairs area. The breakfast was very nice. The location is great for exploring the nearby wine regions. I do agree with other reviews that this is a great place for picnics. We ate on the round porch in the back three out of the four nights we stayed there, but there were many different seating spaces in the garden. This was an easy area to pick up supplies.

There are a few changes at the chateau in terms of management as I believe Petra is running this on her own now. Dinner is no longer available. Also, the pool is not heated as the website says. Our boys found the pool the coldest on our three-week trip. She seems to be available in the morning for questions and suggestions, but was not around at night. She had arranged dinner reservations for some guests, but neglected to tell them where it was. Since Petra was not around, I found a map and showed the couple where the restaurant was as we had been there the night before.

The big shock was the morning of our checkout. Petra insisted on cash only. We paid the deposit using PayPal. She said that she emailed me that it was cash only. I produced the email, and she said that was arranged by her husband, who I assume is no longer in the day-to-day operations of the chateau. We went into Blaye to use the ATM, but it was difficult as the machines have a limit on how much they will give, and our cards had a limit to how much they would give. Luckily we were able to come up with 600 euros. We were a family of four with two rooms. We needed 703 euros. She said we could use PayPal when we returned home. Had I known in advance, this would not have been a problem.

After we left, we realized that we left a suit coat. It took many emails and over two months before it was actually sent. In one of her messages to me, she said that she had several items to return all of the world, but she was just too busy, and she would get to it soon.

Again, this is a lovely chateau in a great location, but there are definitely some issues to be worked out in this transition time.

My wife and I decided to book 10 days at the Chateau because of the rave reviews on the Trip Advisor...we really should have thought twice about this decision. Petra demanded half of the fee before we arrived, and insisted that it had to be paid with Pay Pal. This should have been our first clue.

When we arrived, Petra met us at the door and showed us up to our room. It was absolutely sweltering in the room at 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit). We asked if she could turn on the air conditioning...alas, there is none in the chateau. Begrudgingly, she brought us a small oscillating fan that was of little use. After twenty minutes, I had completely sweated through my shirt and knew that the night ahead would be miserable. We asked her to move to another room...and found out that we were actually interfering with her family reunion going on that week.

Petra’s daughter was quite miffed to be asked to change rooms to accommodate a paying guest. It was evident that we were interfering with her family time and she preferred that we stay out of the way. This was most evident when we asked to sit outside on the porch. Petra said, “Oh, I think some of the other guests would like to sit out there instead.” The other guests were her family members.

In addition, Petra’s oldest daughter was in the midst of a man crisis, thus requiring Petra’s undivided attention. Simply put, Petra was not available to ask questions or seek guidance. We were on our on to figure things out both in the house and in the surrounding area.

Before heading out to dinner, we decided to try the “heated” swimming pool. The pool was ice cold and quite dirty. The water was so cloudy you could not see through it and the bottom of the pool was littered with gravel from around the edges of the pool. Needless to say, we were quite disappointed; however, we should not have been surprised as the grass was nearly 100 centimeters (one foot) high on the grounds. Clearly, maintenance was not a priority for this venue.

On the positive side, we thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful surroundings of the chateau and the two dogs that live there. The chateau is in an extremely remote area with little to do, and even fewer places to eat. If you want to visit the Bordeaux wineries, you have to take an expensive ferry across the river (20 minutes on way, 14 Euros each way) or drive an hour and a half to get to the more well-known Bordeaux areas. This is not a place you want to stay if you want to enjoy late night dinners in Bordeaux as the ferry stops running at 9 P.M.

All in all, this was a disaster. We ended up leaving after the second night and moving to a wonderful hotel on the other side of the river. It was the best decision we could have made and it saved our vacation. In the end, Petra refused to reimburse any of the money for the nights that we did not stay in the Chateau. It was an expensive mistake on our part and one that we would not wish on anyone else.

I would never recommend this place to anyone. Stay away. Petra has lots of family issues that will impinge upon your hard earned vacation. And, whatever you do, do not pay for nights in advance.

We like to apologise for any inconvience our guests might have had. Not everybody has always the same point of view. Such a report is a strong tool and can be used unfair. There might be other intentions behind it. But we are not intending to discuss it in public. A fact is we have more than 80 excellent 5 star ratings, more than anybody else in the Bordeaux area. It prooves that Chateau Bellevue is one of the best b&b places to stay. But anyway - sorry once again. 😊

With much anticipation we arrived at Chateau Bellevue to stay in the self catering accommodation - at considerable expense.
An alarm signal should have rung when on arrival the front pillar at the entrance had been knocked to the ground and left there.
The accommodation in the villa (not the Chateua) was very poor - the bedding configuration not as described - single beds - old single beds with make do sheets, quilts and pillows - the kitchen equipment very poor - and the decoration and items left hanging around certainly not up to standard. Four year old magazines scattered on tables , under couches, old dried flower arrangemetns beyond their prime, burned down candles long past their use by date. All should have been relocated to the dump.
We are a group of experienced travellers , from 5 star to camping and know how to adapt to each environment we find ourselves in.
The greeting on arrival was pleasant enough although our group were not interested in the owners personal dilemnas and difficulties of her current marital situation - we heard about that 10 minutes after arrival.
Her attitude changed considerably over our two week stay - we just got on with what we were doing and caused minimal disruption to her life and that of her family who were staying at the same time.
We too had the same problem as one of the other reviewers - when warning of our departure and the request for an account Petra said she does not do accounts, that the price quoted was incorrect and was 200 euros more and she wanted to be paid in cash.
We asked for her bank account details several times and did not get the info - we eventually did get the information at 10.00 pm evening before out 6.00am departure and paid by electronic transfer in a business like way once we returned home.
Some of our travelling companions who stayed in the Chateau are still waiting for that info and despite several requests still have not paid.
We do not think the property was cleaned before our arrival but was well and truly clean when we left, the gardens have been left to overgrow, the grapes still on the vines, the apples going rotten on the trees.
The grass overgrown - so much so that our husbands actually commenced to mow the lawns on the four wheel mower - because they couldn't stand the untidyness of the place. That went on till they ran out of petrol and Petra suggested that they get the petrol and she would reimburse - obviously that did not happen and the remaining grass is probably still unmowed.
The accommodation in the villa is for 8 people and we were scratching to find 8 plates, 8 kives and forks and 8 mugs for coffee at the one time.
This place has deteriorated since some other friends stayed here in 2010.
It is unfortunate that the host has lost her enthusiasm and her zest and this is reflected in the
manner in which she conducts her business and the way the property has been allowed to deteriorate.
We will not be recommending this property to anyone - it is not at all what appears on the website and that is a shame.

our checkin time was 11pm, Arrived after 2 flight delays, and was locked out. Tried to call numerous times and txt to no avail.we were 50 minutes later than the( estimated time), so after a 40min wait outside, knocking on the door etc we drove off to find somewhere else to stay then received a call from Petra some 25min later and was" told off" for calling at that hour, we turned around and drove back to be greeted by another guest and not the owner.( who in turn was lovely but had a massive argument with her husband in front of us). Room was nice , and we had a good sleep , then received another blast ( telling off) in front of other guests at breakfast. Very embarrassing for both us and the other guests. We then left....... there was no apology or opportunity to explain our late travel with her, if only we could phone her on the plane! would NOT recommend this place to anyone. We travel a lot and we were disgusted in her attitude.

First of all we are very sorry about any inconvenience of our guests. We like to say that this comment is not entirely true. In this case our guests did arrive late at night and we did not have any information about it ! We use to comfort everybody arriving late from a usually long travel. We fully understand the situation. Here we think, we had to deal with a chain of misunderstandings. With a little distance of time we take this opportunity to explain the circumstances any express our apologies. We are happy to have continued with more than 96% of excellent comments.

Looks great in the ad. Booked two nights, stayed one and left. Wonderful location and a great structure but not kept up, disorganized, stuff scattered around and two dogs with the run of the place. The owner and sole employee talked about her problems, how the place was in escrow to a foreign buyer etc. Keep looking, this is not the place in the vineyard you are looking for.

My boyfriend and i booked this as wanted to stay in at least one chateau whilst we were in France. When we arrived we gasped as it truly was more amazing than we expected and the entire stay exceeded our expectations.
When we arrived the property's owner and host Petra greeted us warmly and said she had upgraded us. We were the only guests for the two nights and it felt like our own palace :-) our room was beautifully appointed, had cute individual touches and boasted a gorgeous view over the rolling vineyards and gardens below.
We enjoyed their gorgeous gardens that overlooked the vineyards for a picnic where by boyfriend actually proposed....the perfect setting. There is also a pool for guests to enjoy in the warmer months.
Later that afternoon we excitedly told Petra we had just got engaged. She suggested a cute local french restaurant for us to go to that night for dinner and even text the chef to see if he could give us some special treatment on that special day for us.

Breakfast is served in a beautiful dining room. The spread was delicious and we enjoyed eating with Petra and her mother who was staying there at the time.

In terms of location its perfect. only 45 minutes from Bordeaux in very picturesque wine country 5 minutes from a gorgeous small town called Blaye where you can drive your car onto the ferry that crosses the Garonne river. Its the quickest way (20 min journey) to the other side where you can spend days (if you wish) exploring the amazing wine region of the Medoc.

We loved the fact that it was not a hotel, its a privately owned home that is absolute luxury to stay in and with that special personal touch. We will never forget Chateau Bellevue and the wonderful experience we had there. i would recommend it to anyone
Thank you again Petra and we hope we can come back sooner rather than later :-)

A fairytale chateau in an idyllic location with breathtaking views over the vineyards and The Gironde. Sumptiously and impeccably appointed throughout with the added benefit of a heated Pool. Breakfast was magnificent.
However what made it special, apart from the dogs, was the charming company of Petra, her daughter and the other guests. We have certainly added Chateau Bellevue to our places to return to list.
