We traveled to Chiang Mai in August (2013-just got back!) with our 7 year old daughter. we thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this laid back beautiful and relaxing atmosphere. High quality accommodations (our room decor was lovely-the outdoor shower blissful) at a good price. Beautiful design-well manicured green outdoor space true to the Thai beauty. The food was good, and staff great. Jourgan arranged transportation for us, suggested GREAT restaurants in the neighborhood (Thai and Western). I had my first Thai massage (in a beautiful hut by the pool) and it was lovely. We would definitely stay here again!

What a great experience!!!
The friendly welcome by Jürgen and his lovely wife Phoo, the spacious and beautifully decorated garden villa, the absolute clean and hygienic condition of all facilities and the stunningly manicured garden surroundings are a pleasant surprise.
Only a short drive away from the busy hub of Chiang Mai, this resort is ideally located at the eastern part of Chiang Mai within the very friendly and very original Thai-Village of Doi Saket.
Well-meaning efforts by all, very attentive staff is outstanding.
I particularly enjoyed the times at the plentiful and delicious breakfast which provided a very peaceful and easy-going start to my planned activities for the day.
The available and inexpensive roller-hire at this resort allows for exploration of the immediate surroundings and provides easy access to the various attraction the village Doi Saket has to offer.
Jürgen and Phoo passionately offered their assistance to fulfill my desired needs for adventure and arranged reliable guides & transport to remote areas such as a trip to a coffee farm in surrounding rain forests, my visit to various hill tribes in their remote villages, my excursion to Chiang Rai and the golden triangle, visits to an elephant camp and wild river rides on a bamboo raft.
At night, when some guests enjoyed a last drink at the cosy bar, I was able to share with excitement the experiences I had during the day.
Overall, this resort was an extremely pleasant experience and represents absolute value for money.

We spent three nights at Baan Chai Thung and wished we could have stayed longer. Jürgen, the owner, has built a beautiful resort with individual cottages around a small pond. The attention to detail is simply amazing. For example, the staff place flower petals in intricate designs in ceramic water jars on a daily basis just to add to the natural beauty of the site. The cottages are nicely laid out and the pool is clean. Dinners and breakfasts were a delight with a mixture of Thai and European cuisine. Doi Saket is close enough to Chiang Mai to get into town, but far enough away to be in a very peaceful setting. There are a couple of temples on the hills within walking distance if one doesn't want to take the bikes or motor scooter that are available to guest.

We planned to stay here for a week in March and booked a family bungalow thinking it would be 1 building with two bedrooms so that our little one would have his own room and so would we. Upon arrival we were greeted by Juergen, who was quite surprised that we were only a family of 3. he expected more persons to be using a family bungalow. By that time we also got confused, so he showed us the bungalow to make clear what he meant to say.
The family bungalow are actually three small buildings, two are the bedrooms and the other one is the bathroom (so at night you have to go outside to another building if you need to go to the toilet).
It all looked nice, but having our 1 year old sleep in another building than us, was not what we wanted. So in the end, the baby cot was placed in the room where we would also be sleeping. The size of the room is just too small for this, keeping in mind that we also brought 3 large suitcases and a stroller with us. Getting something from one of the suitcases would actually mean that we would have to get the suitcase outside and open it there to get your things out. This was something we could probably oversee if all else was ok for us.
However, the grounds the bungalows are placed on are filled with gorgeous looking ponds. Not really suitable for a toddler who could just walk and didn't understand that he couldn't swim in it.
It looks absolutely stunning here and you can se that a lot of time and attention is being put in taking care of the surroundings. If we weren't here with a baby, it would have been a peaceful stay for us.
The swimming pool (salt water) looks nice and was perfect for spending a few hours here.
Breakfast was too basic for our liking. We were actually hoping for a bit more thai styled breakfast, but it consisted of toast, jam, meat to put on the toast and omelets.
Location-wise it was too far away from the city that we would have preferred to explore. You needed to get a taxi (about 30 minutes drive) of rent a motor cycle.
All in all, we stayed here a couple of days and then decided to leave earlier and go some place else. The place is really nice for those looking for a relaxing stay; it looks stunning and is so quiet. but for us this wasn't what we expected.

Response from baanchaithung, Owner at Baan Chai Thung Resort
Responded 26 Jul 2014
Dear Larissa, we are very sorry about your unpleasant stay at our resort. If we knew, that you are travelling with a little baby only, we would have suggested to use one of our superior-or standart bungalows, where the rooms are bigger, a baby cot and a lot of luggage is no problem at all in these bungalows. We have a nice swimming pool and the pond is not suitable for swimming in it. In each room we have a handout, where we inform about our breakfast, which INCLUDES also a Thai breakfast - only you would have to inform us about your wishes. Otherwise we offer a european breakfast with bread, butter, jam, honey, salamie, ham, all kind of eggs, omlett, muesli, coffee or tea or cocao, fresh fruits and fruit juices. A look at the map on TripAdvisor or our homepage indicates our location, which is indeed 15-20 km away from the city, but therefor peaceful, quiet and with many possibilities going on excursions without the traffic jam in the city.

Whether or not you like this place will depend entirely on what you're looking for in Chiang Mai. First, a disclosure that we wish we'd have known more about sooner (our own fault for not looking it up): this place is WAY OUTSIDE OF TOWN. As in, 30-45 minute drive, and 400 baht each way, in a taxi. It's also extremely difficult for taxi drivers to find, so every ride home was an adventure, with multiple calls placed to the hotel to find where it is specifically, as there are no signs or landmarks. To the hotel's credit, they were as helpful as they could be to give us maps and help us out, but it was just a huge pain to be going back and forth to the city all the time for activities.

That said, the property itself is really nice and beautiful - the pictures online are accurate. The pool is great, it's a nice place to hang out, and the breakfast is good. The rooms are spacious and feel comfortable, although the beds are very had and not super comfortable, and the shower water pressure leaves something to be desired (although that's likely true at most places in Chiang Mai).

Our conclusion: this place would be really nice and a good value for your money if you don't care to be in town and doing any activities - nice spot to hang out at the pool, get a massage, and relax. However, if you want to do activities (zip line, elephant treks, cooking classes), you're probably better off staying in the city.

I wanted a getaway from city back then, so I chose ChiangMai. I didn't expect that much when I was booking Baan chai Thung. However after 6 days later, I was so happy I booked this resort. Everything was great! Juergen is very helpful and kind, who even took guests out for dinner. I'd definitely recommend it if you want a peaceful place for your city getaway !

We were planning to stay in Chiang Mai for a few days and then continue to travel around in the northern part of Thailand. Shortly after our arrival in this resort we have changed our plans and decided to stay here for the whole time and make this our base for our vacation. It has been a fantastic experience to be able to stay in such a well taken care of little paradise. The team around Juergen and Phoo is constantly working hard to make this a truly remarkable property and ensure that their guests have an unforgettable great experience. We were very sad when the day of our departure came and we had to leave, but we already knew that we will be back here. There is no better place to enjoy your vacation: A clean salt water swimming pool, daily breakfast that is prepared with love and even individual wishes are fulfilled. What a refreshing difference to standard hotel breakfast buffets... And then when they prepare dinner: Thai food is already tasty, but what you can experience here is the top of thai cuisine. Everything was fresh and you could taste that love was an important ingredient, and that makes all the difference. We decided to stay in one of the deluxe bungalows with 2 showers (inside and outside) and I find it important to note that hot water is made through the usage of the solar power. In my opinion an important contribution to the sustainability of life on earth. The harmony of civilization and nature in this place gives you a feeling that it is done right and we were very happy to support that concept. You really arrive as guest and we left as friends. Thanks again for 16 wonderful days in this paradise.

This resort is my favourite place, we have ever stayed in Chiang Mai. We love it's beautiful garden and ponds and a villa full of comforts and luxury. We had a 2 bedrooms villa, a bathroom with 2 separated showers, one inside and the other kind of outside but not exposed. The salt water swimming pool is just wonderful. Juergen and Phoo, the owners were very helpful and welcoming. We had a great time relaxing, watching birds and enjoying peace and quiet.

This was absolutely our favourite accommodation in Thailand / after being in the north for 4 weeks.
Such a beautiful and comfortable and wonderful place … I could have stayed there for weeks. The pool area was lovely and the adjacent breakfast area was spotless. the food was delicious and generous.
The owner, Micha, has thought of everything - including face cloths!! (The only ones I’ve seen in Southeast Asia. Or Central America, for that matter.) The rooms are spacious and yet cozy —- and the bathroom is absolutely first class. Huge countertop. Beautiful sink. Two showers that are both wonderful —- but the outside one is to die for. I wanted to stand in there for hours.

Strongly recommend this beautiful place.
Micha is a friendly and helpful and kind man … and his staff are great as well.

Also —- the on-site restaurant has great food!!

We booked for one night as a stopover on our way to chiang rai , we really didn’t expect much as we had just left a beautiful 5 star resort , and thought this booking would be a huge disappointment , how wrong we’re we , the property which is a collection of wooden bungalows is set in amongst rice fields and although not fancy it more than makes up for it with charm and a great atmosphere .The property is very Thai in style which we loved ,the bungalow had an excellent bathroom with 2 showers one of which had an open air roof .the bed was comfortable and everything was very clean . The staff are very pleasant particularly the owners . The on-site restaurant where we ate in the evening was excellent and very reasonable , the breakfast the following day also did not disappoint. All in all this is an absolute gem of a hotel don’t hesitate to book if you’re in the area
