Detailed Reviews
I’m not sure why people give this place so much grief. You stay overnight on the island you will spend a total of eight hours in your hotel room, just to sleep. There’s plenty to do! We stayed in early May when not everything is open yet, and we were pleasantly surprised by the hotel. The room was clean, it was well equipped, it was modern enough, it had the biggest bathtub I’ve ever seen, and it had secure wifi, a rarity during our trip. Yes we had to schlep up two flights of stairs, maybe 3, but our view was great (ask for it). We just took backpacks, leaving our luggage in the car. The hotel is conveniently located at the entry to the Grand Rue, so you can easily leave your backpacks in their storage room before you check in and after you check out.
The half-pension dinner was just ok, nothing great (although we thought the fluffy omelet was fun; there’s a plain chicken choice). But the restaurant itself was a history lesson about the Mount and the hobnobbing there of the rich and famous. The dining room is pretty. Plenty of people were there. (And don’t miss La Mere’s grave at St Pierre’s Eglise — great epitaph.)
Breakfast was in a large upstairs room and we could sit wherever we wanted. The only hot dish was scrambled eggs, tho a cooker was available to pop fresh eggs in to boil them (that was a new one on us). There were rounds of Brie-ish cheese, four kinds of sliced meat, and small butter croissants and chocolate croissants. Plus all the things you’d get at a Holiday Inn Express: cereal, yogurt (except it’s from La France), juice, coffee and hot chocolate. We were in, out and up at the Abbye for 9:30 opening before the day-tripping hordes arrived!
Stay where you want, but stay overnight on MSM. We noticed that some restaurants had second or third floor dining rooms with views of the bay (the sun didn’t set til 9:30 pm yesterday). This is a magical, unique place, different at every hour of the day and night. Take the time to treasure it.

Has anyone else suffered this fate?
I have a copy of the last communication with booking. Com about this expensive accom., which I didn’t finalise as the price was too expensive ( being almost 600Aud per night)
However , betweenBooking. Com and the hotel , one of them has taken the almost 600 Aud from my account and refuses to refund it, saying I was a no show!
Customer service at bookings just sends me round and round in circles , asking for copies of emails which I send but not giving the refund.
La Mere Poulard is just silent on the topic.
Bookings . Com allege the hotel has taken the funds and it’s up to La mere Poulard to refund them. They have gone into a vacuum!
It’s dishonest in the extreme.
I will never deal with Bookings .com again!

My friend and I were quite stunned by the shabbiness of the hotel. Our room, especially the bathroom, needed a really good clean. There were bad odours in the foyer and no coffee or milk capsules were left in the room nor bottles of drinking water, even though there were tea bags, a kettle and two cups. When we asked for some coffee at the reception we were told that there wasn’t any. When we asked about a table at the restaurant we were told that it was fully booked and that we should have reserved it beforehand. I had spoken to the receptionist the previous day in regards to the parking code and she failed to mention this necessity. The breakfast was okay but the coffee cups provided were too small for the coffee machine and the guests were quick to grab paper napkins as the hot coffee spilled over the cups. We were there for the king tide and the location of the hotel was fabulous….that is its greatest advantage. With a price of 305€ per night, which included my 20% booking.com reduction, we felt that the price was truly exorbitant for what was offered. The staff could have been friendlier and made no effort to ensure that our stay there was a pleasant experience…they simply didn’t care.

· The location was the only saving grace, being so close to the entry gate means that luggage doesn’t need to be hauled up the steep street.
Disliked
· The initial room I was given was certainly not ‘as advertised’ as a double room with bay view - and was basically a box room with minimal view. (compare my photo of my initial room with that of a ‘double with view’ on the site)
The bathroom was adequate but using the shower over bath would have been treacherous for someone less mobile than myself, the height of the bath made it difficult to climb in and out safely.
The housekeeping was less than adequate, and the whole place felt grubby and shabby….. definitely not ‘shabby chic’!
After a complaint to reception, I was moved to another room which was a slight improvement in that it had more room, a slightly better view, and a small fridge that was barely cold.
There was a tea making facility in room - but just a kettle, tea bags and sugar. No coffee or milk.
Breakfast was very basic with ‘industrial’ pastries and a system of self service with slicing of bread etc which I would have considered dubious in these Covid times.
I was left with the impression that the proprietors didn’t care about the guests’ experience as most people visit once and for one night and would rarely be a return visitor.

It was the fourth time that we went to “le Mont Saint Michel” but the first time that we stayed overnight. The hotel is good taking into account the limited space on the mountain. We had chosen an offer, hotel and restaurant and that we should never do again here. The restaurant is famous and we expected to have a good diner. We took the famous omelette in reality there is almost no choice for anything else. When it was served the waitress said: be careful the plate is very hot. The plate was indeed very hot but not the omelette neither the potatoes, they were almost cold. The bacon was not cooked at all and cut in large pieces with a lot of fat. We were not the only one who had this problem the table next to us sent everything back to the kitchen. The wine we had chosen was not available but the waiter said that he had something very similar but he didn’t say that the price was much higher. We will certainly go back to the hotel but never again to this restaurant. Finally one of the four men “working” in the kitchen was not wearing a mask, he put it on when I looked at him!

It took 50+ steps to get to the room. It has a view of the bay. The room has a refrigerator, which keeps drinks and medicine cold. The bathroom is spacious, with a garden tub. The room has one double bed and one twin bed, in a separate room, for a third person. Staying on the island overnight was our goal and this accomadation made it very comfortable. Pack light because this hotel has no elevator. It's at least quarter of a mile from the island shuttle stop to the hotel. Only way to get there is walk, but the experience is worth it.

I was looking for a place to eat and I saw this traditional and beautiful restaurant with a folkloristic chef BEATING AN ENORMOUS POT OF EGGS! We looked at the menu outside the restaurant and we saw that the prices were fine for our pockets, just 15 € for a menu. We decided to enter the restaurant. We sat down and the waitress asked us to order first for the drinks. After they brought us the drinks, the waitress came with the menu and we were two seconds to faint on the floor for the prices! I was wondering how two eggs beaten could cost 40€. The menu that costed 15€ was the menu for the kids! I asked the waitress if we could all have it, but she told us that it wasn’t possible. There was a false information outside because it wasn’t specified that the menu was only the kids. We were ashamed to leave and run away because we had already ordered the two beaten eggs in the pot. The only thing we could do was to accept that we had to pay more than 200€ for four people. The omelette was a simple omelette and it’s not worth it.
It was an adventure.

If this hotel were anywhere else I would have given it three stars simply because it is a bit worn; but it isn't in Paris its a hotel that is 135 years old!! it is charming, comfortable and very clean! We slept with the windows open and listened to the sounds of the sea and the gulls. The breakfast was very good with a lot of fresh fruits, cheeses and breads etc.
I travel a lot and this was worth every penny! Most tourists leave at night and the streets empty out. We had a wonderful meal with copious amounts of cider and just reveled in the fact that we were there.
The location is excellent. Hands down a must if you can manage at least one night on the island. The history in this hotel and on the island is amazing. Do your research and reading before you arrive so you know what you are seeing and experiencing before you get there! There are few places to read about such things and most books to be found nearby are in French!
BE PREPARED to carry your luggage up several winding steps! Pack light if you can manage it. There is no elevator and the staff won't carry your bags for you! :)
Make dinner reservations at the La Mère Poulard restaurant if you must... but do well before you arrive! The omelet is very expensive but, after all it’s famous for a reason and Michelin still recognizes the restaurant for excellence. While we were there a young man was being trained how to make the famous wood fire omelette. Wish the restaurant would give seating priority to those staying on the property.
BE PREPARED to walk a LOT of steps! It really is worth doing some cardio well before before you arrive. I hated seeing so many people unable to go up the steps to the top. If you are Catholic you may want to attend mass, and I highly recommend it trying to catch vespers...lovely.

This is the first hotel you find on the main street. Very comfortable as you don’t need to walk a long way with your bags. From the second floor you also enter the wall walkway directly. But during the morning you get the noise from all deliveries. So both plus and minus. The front desk was nice at arrival.
But that is about it. The breakfast was really bad. Dry bread and a lot of industrial things and not much to choose between. We could not sit where ever we liked. A few old men were coughing, especially during covid times, you don’t want to sit close to them. But the breakfast lady just told us that the table close to them was the only table. But there were other tables as well. Not nice!!! No respect for covid.
The stairway up to the room was really, really dirty. So disgusting! But the room was clean, but why not vacuum the stairway??
We had the biggest room with a view over the water. We were 3 persons, but just 2 towels were placed in the room and the extra bed didn’t have any pillows…as our reception was closed when we notice that, we had to go to the other reception. But they didn’t want to help. Weird!!! They asked for our room number but never came…
To stay on the island is nice as you can wake up early and walk the streets by yourself.
During the day it is veeery crowded. So if you feel that an expensive night in a bad hotel is worth that: Then do it!

Parking was not easy to find as Car Park 3 was not properly signposted and in fact we found it by accident.
The Receptionist at the Hotel was professional and polite.
We booked a Double or Twin Room, Garden View (Annex or Main Building). The route to our bedroom was 'interesting'. We had to travel up two flights of dirty stairs, head outside and into another building. Our room was on the ground floor of the Annex and we quickly found that various people could walk past the window and look in. We had to remember that this was a very old building and not the usual modern standard. The room and bathroom felt clean but obviously 'old fashioned'.
Dinner in the La Mere Poulard Restaurant was underwhelming. The famous omlette was bland, disappointing and unsatisfying. The walls are covered with pictures of times past and the food is also living in the past.
What saved this entire experience was the incredible storm we experienced as we stood on the ramparts. The high tide washing over the causeway was incredible to witness. We will never forget the feeling of being on this island and walking through the nearly deserted streets.

No, you cannot park on the Mount. There is a lot outside the bay but the hotel has to giveyou a code to access it. Take a small luggage with the minimum only.
From the parking there is a shuttle that goes to the Mount.
Each room of La Mère Poulard Hotel has its own individual bathroom
With regards to keeping your luggage it really depends on how busy the hotel is, or how helpful the staff want to be. The lobby and reception area is tiny. If they already have luggage from other travellers then they may not have enough room for yours. If they have the space then it will be OK. But be aware, the staff are not very helpful and even if they have space may not help you. You have to be ultra nice to them to start with!
