If you are going to visit this wonderful medieval island, stay at one of the hotels. You get a chance to explore the narrow alley ways and streets after all the crowds leave in the evening and before they arrive in the morning. It gives the place an entire different feel. This hotel was a great choice. Our room only had a partial view of the bay, but some of the rooms have a straight on view. So be sure to request what you want. I think the prices go up for the better views. Our room was very nice and comfortable with a modern bathroom. Highly recommended.
I have dreamed of visiting this gorgeous island and this beautiful abbey for so long. I got butterfly's in my belly as we approached it from a distance. It is every bit as breathtaking in person as I could ever have imagined. I got a room with the most perfect view of the Abbey lit up right outside my window. The church bells echoed over the island as I lay watching the shadows dance through my room and felt the sea breeze through my open window. It was better than a dream. The tour that evening inside the stunning cathedral walls was mesmerizing. What a magnificent structure ! The architecture and the courtyards are breathtaking ! I can't wait to visit again...I will be returning. I loved staying on the island and wandering the streets without all the crowds from the bus tours earlier in the day. And I was able to make time to take my shoes off and walk in the sand to the waters edge and soak my feet. The views of the island from the beach are extraordinary ! Make reservations ahead and request a sea view or a view of the Abbey. I stayed on the 4th floor and it was gorgeous ! Very comfortable and clean.…
We went at night to go to the abbey. When we got back ,the front door was locked and our key doesn't work there. We had to go on the city wall and enter through the back. It was SO strange. I think the room wasn't that great. Of course this city is historic, so I guess that's expected. Be prepared to carry your luggage up a narrow spiral stairwell up at least 5 floors. OMG.
For the price we paid for 2 rooms I would say the rooms are very small. The rooms we had (501 and 503) were above the restaurant and at night we heard the plates moving and staff talking and in the morning they hoovered which woke us up after we finally got to sleep after the food deliveries. At 5am the food was delivered up the street on a cart and it made such a loud noise for over an hour. You can hear tourists in the street at night and in the morning. Fairly out of date decor. And food and drinks are very expensive on the whole island. €17 for a buffet breakfast which is not included. We went to the place next door and had coffee and croissant instead. (Pictures of the town not the hotel).
I would highly recommend staying overnight at Mont St. Michel as you basically have the place to yourself after the crowds leave by the evening and particularly if you wake up early to stroll around the island (7 am to 9 am) before the crowds arrive. Note that there are hotels in the actual Mont St. Michel and there are those in an area just before the causeway which also seems to be referred as being in Mont St. Michel. Definitely you'd want to be on the island but obviously there is a price premium and availability issue. This hotel lies along the main street leading to the abbey. It is managed together with other adjacent properties. It is on top of street and rampart level restaurants and require a few flights up a narrow spiral staircase so large suitcases should be avoided. We had a water-view room but the tide did not rise up over that section of the island. It was clean and comfortable with a decent-sized bathroom. No air-conditioning but it was quite comfortable with the sea breeze with the windows open even during the heat wave. There is a nice breakfast in one of the adjacent sister hotels. With an overnight stay, I would highly recommend a hike around the island during low tide. The tourist office not far from the hotel was most helpful. Again, wake up early for a walk around the island before the day-trippers arrive.…
