My trip from Australia was largely based around staying here. *shedding a tear* I am rather heartbroken. Is it easy enough to get to in one day, and hike back down and stay in a place down there? I was hoping to hike up, spend...More

This location was last on our itinerary for Switzerland and if you know the saying "saving the best for last" then this applies perfectly to this hidden away treasure. Personally I'm not very good with heights, so the journey with the cable carts was a...More

The view on the mountain restaurant aescher won a price of national geographics because it looks so special. It deserves this price. It is also a beautiful hike up there. We would recomend the hike instead of taking the cableway. The food in the restaurant...More

Hi Sonia, I also just had this experience with trying to book for next summer. I haven't called them to confirm but it does appear to be closed for overnights. I was lucky enough to stay there last year - it was very cool, but the whole region is absolutely lovely, and if the weather is nice it's a pretty easy hike up and down the mountain from Wasserauen so would be easy to spend time at Aescher as a day trip. If I remember correctly, there is a hotel or two in Wasserauen, or you could stay in Appenzell, which is a WONDERFUL town, and only 10 minutes on the train from the start of the hike or cable car up to Aescher. If you had a headlamp you could even hike down in the evening pretty safely and catch the sunset on the mountain. Aescher is all dormitory style beds, which does make a little harder to sleep, so you may even prefer a normal room in a nearby town. If you stay in the town of Appenzell there are also some really beautiful hikes from the town center that take you out into the rolling green hills. Hope this was helpful!

If you are only planning on going for lunch and then heading back out, is there anywhere to store your items at the station? We will be leaving from the station to our next destination so we will have our bags.

Hi there, I am hoping to go to this place next week. We will not stay here at night. We would go there by car from Zurich. We have planned to hike to the restaurant, enjoy the sunset while having local food and come down to the car park. I would please like to have a detailed step by step guide on the hiking path so that we dont get lost or know where we're going! Any information would be highly appreciated. Thank you.
