Stayed here with a group of friends, we had the most amazing weekend. Great location for walking, amazing views, great facilities (only downside is toilets are downstairs and beds upstairs), so cosy! We ate at the Ty Gwyn each night and were welcomed into the village with open arms. We'll definitely stay there again!!

I stayed in a single bed in the male dorm, using it as a revision retreat (upcoming exams) with a few sessions at Surf Snowdonia booked in, which is 15 minutes down the road. I couldn't have picked a better spot. Its a tiny hostel, with only a few rooms, so I doubt it ever gets that busy, it was...

My brother was visiting from Iowa and decided to stop in some hostels over the mountains - he says that this was the best one for service and location. Thank you so much for looking after him; he had a great time and I am sure will be back.

Dear Langdon A, I am glad to hear your brother enjoyed his stay at YHA Rowen. It is one of the YHA volunteer managed hostels. Our Volunteers do an amazing job keeping our smaller properties open during summer season. I will pass your positive feedback to the lady who was looking after the hostel that week. With my best wishes,

This hostel is at the top of a very steep track, and the last building before the tarmac ends and the moorland slopes of Tal-y-Fan take over. Some cars can't climb the hill and it's necessary to park and walk the last few hundred metres: always a good sign for mountain retreats. What a place awaits: gurgling streams, complete silence...

3rd year staying here and we were not disappointed!!! Woke up to snow making the view even more spectacular!!! Well equipped and although a steep ascent car got up there no problem, unlike myself staggering back from the pub ;-) look forward to going back again next year

I stayed here for a friend's birthday, they booked out the whole hostel, just wanted to say how well equipped and comfortable the hostel is, especially the kitchen. There is a log fire in the lounge, which we needed even in July! The area is great for walks, and there are amazing views across the valley from the hostel garden,...

We hiked in from Llandudno Jnct via the Welsh Coastal path to begin with, picking up the Hum Tom path above Penmeanmawr (great views of hills and coast all the way) which led us gently into the back of the hostel, meaning we didn't have to face the long, steep climb up from Rowen we'd read so much about in...

Gem of a hostel run by volunteers - Thank you Beth for making our stay a friendly and special one. Clean and comfortable and great self catering facilities. Road up to hostel is very steep - my car struggled! We worth the effort of getting here - views are fantastic!

We stayed one night and we struggled to find the hostel, but each time we were a little lost there on the side was a little sign pointing us in the right direction. I class myself as a good driver prepared for anything and I did struggle with the incline to the Hostel in the car, but it was just...

We booked this hostel through exclusive hire for 3 nights. It's a great little hostel - sleeps up to 20, but that might be a bit of a squeeze. Perfect for about 12 people. Stunning views, comfortable rooms and well-equipped kitchen. The only challenge is the final ascent - very steep (1 in 3) slope. if you come by car,...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The hostel’s unique farmhouse character has been retained, whilst the interior has been transformed to provide modern, contemporary and comfortable accommodation for 20 guests.Rowen youth hostel is located 830 ft above the Conwy Valley, giving unrivaled views of the valley, the mountains of Snowdonia and the nearby Conwy estuary. The youth hostel was established in 1948 when YHA acquired the farmhouse at Rhiw farm, the adjacent farm buildings remaining, as they do today, in agricultural use. It will come as no surprise to visitors to learn that rhiw in Welsh means a steep place; to reach YHA Rowen it is necessary to negotiate a single track metalled road with sharp bends and gradients peaking at 1:3. So arriving at the hostel can be an adventure in itself; but that said, no difficulty should be encountered by drivers of the average car in reaching the hostel, simply engage first gear and take your time. One tip, if it's your first visit it would probably be better to arrive in daylight. Once there the hostel has quite extensive parking available. The garden at Rowen youth hostel is terraced and has two main parts; the upper area by the main entrance is a (relatively) level lawn and is furnished with a picnic bench and garden seat, while at the lower level there is a damson orchard and an area for lighting small fires. Both these areas give extensive views over the Conwy valley with the estuary and the sea being visible from the lower boundary. Being situated at the terminus of the metalled road and high above the valley means there is a total absence of traffic noise, a rare thing these days, the only sounds being those of the sheep and the birds. ... more   less

“There are two larger group rooms with lovely views, so do try to use those. There is an issue with the bathroom and toilets being so far from the rooms and having to go through the dining room to get to them, but still the hostel is in such a beautiful location, this detail seemed a small price to pay.”
