Now open Penally Abbey is a small Country House Hotel and Restaurant situated in an elevated position, adjacent to the 12th-century church in the pretty floral village of Penally. Penally is only 1.5 mls from the beautiful medieval walled town of Tenby with its cobbled streets, ancient ramparts, picturesque harbour, and long sandy beaches in the heart of the Pembrokeshire Coastal National Park. The 'Abbey' is pretty rather than grand. The rooms are beautifully proportioned and sympathetically decorated and furnished to compliment the style of the building. Unusual features are the large ogee head doors and windows through which one can see views of Tenby Golf Course, Caldey Island and across the bay toward the Gower peninsular. We serve unpretentious food in beautiful surroundings. Our staff are friendly but not too intrusive. Our rooms are warm, clean and comfortable. We are only 800 yds from Tenby's South Beach. But most importantly we offer the warmest welcome in Wales.

Staying at this hotel has been a wonderful experience ! Everything is so lovely, well designed and thought, the staff is so friendly and the place so beautiful that I don't know where to start from !
We arrived in the late evening and were welcome by a very nice and friendly gentleman who took us to one of the most gorgeous rooms I ever stayed in: room 3. Recently renovated with great taste, it is a very large room with a fantastic bathroom, all decorated in dark red, creamy and sandy shades. The only default of the room is that it is located over the restaurant, or so it seemed, and in the morning it was a bit noisy - but nothing that ruined our pleasure to be here.
Before going to bed, we had a herbal tea in the bar, where we were served by one of the nicest bar tenders I ever met!
In the morning we discovered the beautiful view over the ocean and had a tasty and well cooked breakfast in the restaurant. Everything was pretty in this room, and the lady who served us was pleasant and helpful.
Special thanks go to the blonde lady who checked us out and went out of her way to help us with tourist information about the area. Thanks to her sound advice, we visited St Davids first, and on our way back, we enjoyed beautiful Tenby.
I only regret that we have stayed too little time to explore the surroundings and enjoy an afternoon tea at the hotel - we should have booked it in advance, as they were fully booked the afternoon of our stay.

Attended a family wedding here over the bank holiday weekend. This place is amazing, tucked away up a little lane with amazing views over the golf course and the sea beyond. Caldy Island and the Gower Coast can be seen from the grounds. The hotel is spotlessly clean, friendly staff and great service. As a guest at this wedding we were served Canapés and Prosecco out on the veranda and the well maintained grounds, followed later by well presented, deliciously tasty meal. Well done to the management and their team.

We spent 4 nights at the hotel and stayed in room 6. On our arrival we received a very warm welcome and were shown to our room which managed to be both comfortable and elegant. We then were offered tea and cake in the sitting room/drawing room to relax after our journey. The hotel was dressed for Christmas and was glowing with warmth. In the evening there are candles everywhere creating a lovely atmosphere. The food is excellent. We ate in the hotel every evening. The staff are excellent; friendly and helpful. The location of the hotel is beautiful and looks out to the beach over sand dunes and 10 minutes walk gets you to the shore. We walked to Tenby on a very bracing day and wandered around the town. We also visited Saundersfoot which has a beautiful little harbour and the tearoom at St Florence is worth a visit.

We had booked a 2 night stay as part of our Golden Wedding celebrations. Unfortunately, my wife got 'pinged' by Track & Trace so naturally followed Government advice, contacted the hotel to try and rearrange the booking. Their first and only response was: "You know you are now liable for a 50% cancellation charge - even if you wish to rearrange your booking." Nothing else. No thought as to how we were or what the impact might be. I then wrote to them explaining our situation and asking for feedback. Nothing. I've found their overall response to be totally lacking in compassion and basic decency.

Arriving in Penally Abbey Hotel during a high level of COVID in the area and having just left a hotel in Narberth where it was considered a priority we were confused and annoyed by the lax attitude displayed by staff.
Having read the hotel’s Guest Safety policy on their website which stated guests should wear masks whilst moving around the hotel we were taken aback by no staff ,except one at breakfast, adhering to their “rule”
They could not take our luggage to our room because of distancing but freely walked around without a mask themselves. Other guests took their lead and followed suit.
It was even more surprising that management allowed this behaviour with a member of their own staff off sick with COVID.
We paid £270 a night for a large room without a telephone to communicate with reception. I had to dial the main hotel number to make an enquiry. There was no internet connection either. We were told we’d have to go down to the lounge to pick up a signal. Hardly conducive to the working environment we needed on this trip.
The food was good but the whole experience was memorable for the wrong reasons.
Penally need to read their own advice and act on it not as a member of staff said at reception when we raised the issue “ it’s up to the ( staff’s) personal choice

Friends, family and The Times have said many good things about this gem, just about two hours over the bridge into Wales.
Tucked away in an hamlet about two miles west of Tenby in a lovely little village, on entering the village the hotel nestled just up on the right on a steep drive. Of course being high up it provides super views.
Our arrival was akin to visiting friends such was the warm welcome, and we stayed in room eleven which is situated in an attached building accessed by going outside of the main building then just nearby , on the first floor by going up steep set of stairs , super large room with a large en-suite shower room , my wife loved the room as much as I loved the fabulous bed.
Meals were taken in the main house which was truly wonderful , fabulous isn’t a misplaced word, so original in design, I loved the dining room and talk about a room with a view, I couldn’t take my eyes off the window frames so stylish.
We enjoyed breakfast because it was as good as is expected, hot and served with charm and efficiently by Patsy who was such a personality. Evening meals were very good , varied and very presented. I should say all of the staff were friendly relaxed and very good to be around, wonderful service .
Evening cocktails were taken by us on the terrace with ‘superb mature gardens’ overlooking in the distance the beach, that provides a good walk into Tenby.
Unlike the reports on some of the larger so called luxury hotels recorded by me on trip advisor , Penally Hotel is original, relaxed yet highly professional and fits the term boutique hotel superbly , a real gem.
Easy to recommend to anyone wanting a super weekend away, great walks nearby and great coastline .

Stayed for 3 nights in early July in Room 6 as part of a holiday Pembrokeshire to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary after planned trip to Canada was cancelled due to Covid.
The hotel was situated around a mile outside Tenby so access was easy but in Penally you avoid the hustle and bustle of Tenby. It is easy to catch the train from Penally station, we took it to Saudersfoot to walk the coastal path back to Penally. The room was stunning with large french windows that opened to a view across the golf course to the sea and on clear days across to north Devon. One day when weather was not so good sat for several hours in comfortable sofa watching the view.
The hotel has beautiful gardens which we enjoyed when weather was good. The interior reminds you of a beautiful country house with stunning decor.
The staff are welcoming but discrete with a high standard regarding Covid cleanliness.
We only ate breakfast in the hotel as wanted to try restaurants in surrounding area. However breakfast was excellent in terms of choice and quality with a timed system to ensure social distancing.
Overall a wonderful stay and a good choice if you want to celebrate a special occasion.

We stayed at Penally Abbey for three nights while we explored the wonderful Pembrokeshire coastline. The hotel is set in a lovely peaceful area away from the hustle and bustle of Tenby but close enough to walk if feeling energetic. The hotel faces the sea and there is a beach just 10 – 15 mins walk away. There is adequate parking but it can be a little congested at times although we had no problem with access.
We felt very welcome at Penally Abbey as all the staff were friendly , courteous and attentive. The décor was also warm and cosy, particularly in the restaurant, lounge and communal areas.
We stayed in one of the top floor rooms which was full of character and had all the amenities we expected from a good quality hotel.
The outstanding feature of this hotel , for us, was the restaurant where we enjoyed the excellent food in a beautifully decorated setting . Much of the lighting, in the evening, was provided by candlelight which created a relaxed and warm atmosphere. On top of this the restaurant has a view of the sea which we thoroughly enjoyed at breakfast.
Meal times including breakfast are staggered presumable to prevent an influx of guests arriving at the same time, consequently it was necessary to book a time slot for breakfast on arrival. This worked very well for us as we had very short waiting times for meals. If you wish to dine in the restaurant for dinner we suggest you book this well in advance of your arrival to secure a table.
Our overall experience of Penally Abbey was excellent and we look forward to returning.

We just spent a night here as a last minute break, as one room was available for the one night. On arrival we were greeted by a friendly receptionist who gave us all the detail we needed and advised that coffee and cake were available on a complimentary basis. As the rain had stopped we sat outside and enjoyed the treat. We were asked if we would like dinner and decided to take one of the two remaining slots, as we didn’t want to hunt around in the local area, particularly knowing how busy it was. So we had a late dinner at 20:30. Excellent starter that we shared of scallops, followed by lamb for my wife and hake for me, once again a very enjoyable meal. My wife skipped dessert, but I had the sesame sponge with ginger ice cream and rhubarb. Along with drinks this came to just over £100, which seems about par for the course at the moment.
The room we stayed in was very spacious and spotless. The only gripe was that we were not warned that the plug mechanism was faulty on the bath, so we ended up bailing out the water, until I could manually release the plug. It transpired that they were aware of this issue, so a a warning would have been useful, but it didn’t spoil our stay.
Breakfast was excellent, fresh orange juice served in nice little glass bottles and a good range of breakfast options, couldn’t fault it.
Would we stay again? Definitely.

Been going to this establishment for 2 decades for dining. This is the first time staying there.
A regency era Rectory built in Penally in Tenby’s heyday. Love the beaches but I’m not a fan of Tenby’s commercial hustle during the peak seasons but areas like Penally, Manorbier, Stackpole and Waterwynch Bay offer quieter retreats that better capture the natural outdoor beauty of South Pembrokeshire. The Penally Abbey Hotel is one of them.
Come at the right time of year when the plants and shrubs are blooming and the gardens at the hotel can be stunning with a beautiful outlook to the sea, Caldey island. The garden includes its own derelict chapel.
The hotel accomodation facilities are excellent, we stayed in one of the eave rooms, the interior had careful and considered attention to detail and bags of character.
Service is warm, friendly and accommodating.
The restaurant has quality sourced ingredients and cooked beautifully. There was real invention in the starter dishes (brown crab caviar dish) and dessert dishes (Hafod cheeseboard but not a cheeseboard with apple sorbet). Top drawer dishes.
The main dish lacked flair and for £32 or £34, requiring an £8 side dish, pushing it over £40 for a main means you have to deliver something more than proficient cooking. Otherwise charge less.
Morning breakfast is a delight on a sunny day. I recommend the afternoon tea as well which we’ve had on separate occasions.
The hotel needs a little more attention to detail in housekeeping : the cleaning of surfaces in the lounge; the downstairs toilet near reception look tired and needed fresh towel linen.
Naturally we will stay again.

I am very sorry to advise that we are closed in August. We had a fire at the hotel in late May and we are now carrying out restoration works to the building.

We stayed in the main house where the rooms are lovely and given the taste of the owners, I would be very surprised if the annexe rooms aren't equally appointed.
