Winter Haven is located in Clarence Town, one of the most scenic towns in the Bahamas. The hotel, restaurant, bar and pool and hot tub are built right on the beach. The view to the east is all ocean and reef. To the west, you look out over the marina harbor and town. Within minutes, you can be bone fishing the flats, snorkeling the crystal clear waters, or beach-combing the white sands.

Winter Haven is a complex of sixteen cottage type units. All very private and very clean, comfortable, roomy and modern. The view is astounding from the large porches and it is very quiet. There is a private pool and jacuzzi facing the beach. The Knowles family will make you think you are at a best friends home with all the attention you can want when you want it. The adjacent Rowdy Boys restaurant has some of the best local cuisine in the islands at reasonable prices and serves meals all day. There are cars available for rent so you can explore many pink sugar sand beaches where you may see another person if you are lucky. If you like spas and all-inclusives stay away. If you want peace and tranquility in a prardise setting, email Muriel and catch a daily flight from Nassau to Deadman's Cay. Bathing suit and shorts will be all you need.

I stayed here for a week in January 2013. The rooms were really big and clean, the bed was comfortable and i agree with the other positive comments. The best part of the stay, aside from the whirlpool on the pool deck overlooking the ocean, was the hospitality of everyone at the place. You are treated like family. Chloe even fried up a fish I caught! The food at their restaurant Rowdy Boys was fantastic, too. Chloe's son even promised to make conch salad for us, and it was great. When I go back, this is where i will stay for sure.

I can't let that last review stand. We booked 8 nights at Winter Haven starting 11/22. I was worried after reading this review in the airport on our way to Long Island. After 7 nights with no problems and having met the entire family that runs Winter Haven I asked about the event described in Stay Away review. According to Chlo the person that called the reviewer a jew was not in fact a Rowdy Boy or member of the family but rather a fishermen sitting at the bar who was mad that someone would try to negotiate a car rate. I do not believe Chlo could tell a lie if she tried and I definitely believe her.

I also rented a car through winter haven without a problem. It was ready for me at Winter Haven when I arrived and I just dropped it off at the airport when finished. The rate was a little higher but hey it isn't like you are in the USA and just about everything costs a little more on Islands. They aren't making a lot of money off of rentals.

I am not a reviewer I just signed up to respond to maxw84. Winter Haven Inn is a very nice place overlooking the Atlantic with a great pool overlooking the Atlantic. The rooms were simple clean with working AC. The room was overlooking the Atlantic which is a treat as the sound of the waves put us to sleep each night. We were picked up from the airport by Bernard which we did not expect but very happy about it as we didn't see any taxis. Bertis and Bernard were also very helpful and nice to us during our stay. Chlo noticed that my girlfriend had cut her foot on the beach and brought bandages and tape to take care of her foot. What other Inn would take care of their guest this well. They made us feel like family.

The food at rowdy boys was very good. The menu is posted on their site we had most breakfasts at Rowdy Boys but also several dinners and snacks. I was hooked on the lobster and the conch fritters.

The only bummer of the trip was that their hot tub was damaged in the Hurricane and it is a waiting repair. Everything else was fine.

Winter Haven Inn and Rowdy Boy's restaurant exceeded my expectations. I would stay there again and I would recommend Winter Haven to friends and family.

Thank you Bertis, Bernard, and Chlo for making our trip so great. See you next time.

Arrived here with great expectations after reading the reviews.
Paid a premium compared to other available accommodation.
First day, I was negotiating the cost of a rental vehicle only to be called a "[...]" by one of the Rowdy boys themselves. While he had never actually met a Jew he explained it merely referred to someone who would negotiate you down to your last dollar.
I returned to my plush single room, with no TV, one working power outlet, and single towel, packed and sought out alternate accommodation down the road. I found it for half the price, a cleaner 3 room apartment, working A/C, internet connection, TV and more.
The food at Winter Haven was appalling; unless you like everything fried and fatty.
The owners were indifferent to my leaving, and I was glad to go.
Avoid this place at all cost.
If you want good food, go to Max's place : great food, grilled, tasty and made fresh.

A rather special experience. We picked this place based on the very good ratings here. However, the experience started with a pickup by one of the rowdy boys from the airport to the hotel on which he was continuously drinking alcohol and we even stopped at the liquor store to get more booze, which he consumed while driving us to the hotel. And our experience continued like it began. The food at the restaurant is nice - this is if you like greasy, tasteless food.

We had a fantastic stay at Winter Haven. We had bought/won our 2 night stay at a fund raiser silent auction held on Staniel Cay.
We arrived and were welcomed by the friendly "Rowdy Boy"proprietor, Bernard. We had met his brother Barry, & Ben over on Staniel. By the time we left today, we felt like we were one of the family; having met their sister and Mom. Mom even gave us a personal tour of the family farm down the road. We enjoyed seeing her productive garden, herds of goats, sheep , pigs and cow.
The Friday night Pig Roast with succulent roast pork , delicious curried mutton, cole slaw, and a plentiful array of vegetables from the family farm were fantastic. The guava cake, and wedding cookies finished off the delicious meal.
Our room had a gorgeous 2nd floor ocean view, was spotlessly clean with comfortably cool air conditioning.

Be sure to walk over to the marina to witness the shark feeding frenzy when the fishing boats clean their catch.

We are delighted to have visited this extremely personable island and look forward to our return next year. Hugs to the Knowles family. Thank you again for the awesome hospitality !

We had dinner at Rowdy Boys our first night on Long Island and breakfast a week later. Cracked conch, fish fingers (grouper), omelet, and stewed snapper. The stewed fish was not on the menu but it is common in the Bahamas so I asked and they prepared it. The service is good and they are one of the few places open on Sundays. We did not stay at the Winter Haven Inn.

Although we haven't stayed at Winter Haven (as we've been on a boat), we've been frequenting the nearby Flying Fish Marina for years and we always visit Chloe and family at Winter Haven, and always eat at least a few delicious meals at Rowdy Boys. (It's a great place for cocktails and cold Kaliks, too!) The Knowles family are warm, wonderful hosts, and their place is clean, comfortable, and very welcoming. The setting is gorgeous... lovely, landscaped grounds, beautiful ocean views, located at a beach upon which you can walk for several miles (just take flip flops or something similar for places where you need to cross coral/rock). The pool is clean & refreshing and... well, those views! Having traveled in the Out Islands often, I can honestly say that Clarence Town, Long Island, is one of my all-time favorite places -- and a visit would not be complete without a stop or a stay at Winter Haven and Rowdy Boys.

If you are looking for a place that typifies life in the family islands of the Bahamas this is the place to stay, clean, bright and very friendly. As with the family islands though, don't expect much. At the current time there are 8 rooms in two buildings, two up, two down and it seems another building, not as close to the water is in the works. Nice pool and jacuzzi but a very limited beach on the property. Clarence Town itself is pretty laid back, a lovely old church, the marina and the packing house.... if you're coming here for the action, stay in Nassau. The big attraction is the laid back attitude and the beautiful water.

A note to put some thing into perspective. The hotel and restaurant were built by the Knowells(sp?) family to meet a real area need. Mom and dad (Chlo and Bert) had built up a successful heavy construction firm. The sons, the "rowdy boys" currently run the firm and their families help in the hotel operations. The "boys" in themselves are impressive masses humanity, rough gems, not polished. But as a whole friendly is the operative word, we were there the weekend of Chlo's 70th birthday party and all were invited to the celebration, foold and liquor flowed until two in the morning, for some... and at 8AM thing were back to usual with the entire family pitching in to the clean up.

A great place to see the real Bahamas.

We discovered this gem of a hotel unexpectedly, after being diverted to Long Island by Bahamas Air for a night's stay. We have visited the Bahamas five times in the last five years, staying at resorts and private houses. Winter Haven stands out for its friendliness, cleanliness, excellent food and especially its value for money.
It is new (opened in May 2008), and it is located in Clarence Town (about twenty minutes from Deadman's Cay airport on Long Island). It is run by the Knowles family with an unusual combination of great warmth and efficiency. The hotel sits right on the water, has eight rooms (ours was well furnished with comfortable beds, impeccably clean and well air-conditioned), a pool and a hot tub, perched atop a low seawall with the beach beyond. The real treat here is the restaurant (and bar), which serves wonderful Bahamian fare in a relaxed family style atmosphere. We have never had better cracked conch (or B-B-Q ribs) on the islands.
This is a great place and we look forward to returning for a longer stay.
