Multi-award winning (Front of House Manager of the Year 2013, National Pub Food Award 2013 & National Pub Business Innovation Award 2013 at The Publican's Morning Advertiser Awards) Classic 16th Century Grade II listed thatched Freehouse in the pretty Cambridgeshire conservation village of Balsham, sitting well back from the High St, overlooked by the village church. Beamed ceilings, log fires, four cask ales, full range menu from sandwiches to fine dining, well known restaurant (AA Rosette, Alastair Sawday, Good Pub & Good Beer Guides, newly restored barn restaurant - oak raftered and panelled, traditional dry peg construction. Five new-build double ensuites, free internet access (modem and wireless), 4 AA stars. New sister pub to The Red Lion Hinxton.
We really struck lucky with this gem of a place. We stayed for two nights last weekend and cannot fault the pub. All the staff were amazingly friendly and helpful, the room was comfortable and the food was wonderful, definitely quite a few notches above normal pub food. To top it all our dog was also very welcome. We hope to make a return trip next year.

Amazing food - spectacular starters, Goat’s cheese and pear, and grilled watermelon with a chilli pineapple jam and avocado - followed by delicious beef burgers and the best fries. I never photograph my food, but I did this time! Great beer too.

A huge thank-you to Alex, Rob, Liz, Kitty, Bernice, Luke and the rest of the team at the Black Bull. Amazing food and service for my dinner party. Everyone loved it. If you’ve not been - you need to go…. Thank-you so much

Lovely country pub. Log fire to warm you up after a chilly walk. The food is exceptional. On our first night I had venison cooked to perfection, my wife had fish and chips, similarly very good. We had pheasant last night of Michelin star quality. The staff we super friendly with particular thanks to Luke and Rob. They have a small number of rooms which are basic but comfortable. Only very minor problem was the towels were a little small. A hearty recommendation.

This was my second visit to The Black Bull which is a lovely looking pub - the first being about eight years ago when I had a really nice meal there. This time things were sadly not as good. On the whole the food was ok but my vegan burger (which was a bog standard supermarket one) arrived burnt and had to be re cooked, desserts/teas were forgotten and cutlery had to be chased up. As I said in my title, disappointing…

My partner, a friend and I have just had a prize-winning supper at the Black Bull. The staff were welcoming, smiley and attentive, and the food was fantastic. We’d hoped for a “good” pub meal, but this was outstanding. Imaginative menu, beautifully presented food, and - most important - it all tasted delicious. They even got the serving sizes right! It’s not cheap, but it’s worth the money and we’d happily go back when we’re next in the area.

Rob came up trumps again when he served Mike with a fantastic pork chop. According to Mike it was better than any he’s had in The Chop House, and he’s had a few! An incredibly busy weekend at the Black Bull last week but the kitchen was on top form and turned out some amazing food while the front of house staff were amazing as always, great service couldn’t ask for more.

Four of us booked for a meal to celebrate my wife's birthday and we had a lovely time. All the staff were friendly and professional. Food was excellent and nothing was too much trouble. Well worth the fairly lengthy drive - shame we don't live nearer :-) Thank you!

Been here years ago and went back over the weekend. Delicious mains in a lovely setting. The best pannacotta I have had in a restaurant in the UK- perfect texture. Highly recommend their Spring menu if you get the chance to go soon!

Delicious food, great service and good atmosphere. Our waiter was friendly and efficient. We very much enjoyed our small Christmas party and chose the general menu which was perfect with vegetarian and gluten free options. Will most certainly recommend.
