We have been to the Malt Shovel a few times, but on this occasion, nine of us arrived for lunch. Welcoming landlady and staff, with relaxed, warm and responsive service. Good attention to detail, which is appreciated. And the beer was fine, well kept and our group with widely differing preferences- carnivores, vegetarian and vegan all enjoyed their meal. It...

Having seen the reviews, we decided to go to this pub for a light bite and a pint. My wife and I walked through the door into a nice cosy pub with a lovely warm open fire which was most welcome on a rainy day. The pub serves the best pint of Marstones pediagree I have ever tasted. For the...

Just wanted to say thankyou to Sue and the staff at The Malt Shovel for my father's birthday dinner, after having his treat of driving a steam train just down the road at Ecclesbourne railway ( who are also lovely people who really looked after and gave him the ultimate in steam train driving experience ) and as it was...

I totally agree with the last few contributers. This is a great pub serving good food and an excellent pint of pedigree. Perhaps the earlier visitors just didn't understand Derbyshire humour! Well worth a visit.

I have called in at this pub whilst out walking and have always received a warm welcome. Their Sunday lunch is excellent value, with three sizes on offer. The Pedigree bitter is superb! If you are after fine dining with a large choice, this isn't the pub for you, but if like your pubs simple and rural, it certainly is.

Not sure what pub previous reviewers had been in but we were given a warm, friendly welcome in this cosy "proper" country pub. The place was warm, with log fires burning in the bar and dining area. We were passing and hungry so popped in for a Sunday roast. We both had a medium roast and the quality was very...

Not sure where the recent reviewers have been! The Malt shovel is a proper pub with real food, no pretentious city style overpriced rubbish just honest, simple food cooked well with good portions and good prices. X2, yes 2! real fires burning, lovely log fire in the bar and log burner in the 'dining' area. If you want fancy then...

We were a party of 12 out walking on Bank Holiday and had offered to pre order meals to keep things simple. We were in a room with a radiator that wasn't working and a log burner that wasn't burning, we were sat in coats and hats. Welcome was odd, food was average and service sparodic. We went home for...

Sorry guys, not impressed. Cold pub and cold staff (specifically lady behind the bar). Her manners were absent and the heating appeared to have failed. It seemed a staff member had the warm seat beside the fire whilst in the other room (where we sat) there was no heating. Food was regular, but nothing notable. Decor was shabby and they...
