Detailed Reviews
As I have stayed here before and Reddish organized a Guide for the Bario Loop trekking, I was surprised when Reddish stopped answering my e-mails. I had booked to stay at Bariew Lodge for three days to attend the annual Pesta Nukenen. Arriving at the tiny airport we expected to get picked up, but had to get other transport because no one from Bariew Lodge was there. The Lady that gave us a lift mentioned that the owner of our hostel had died in a car accident. His widow, Julfines, is trying hard to manage the lodge and we cannot complain about her service. However things have change in the Kelabit Highlands. Apparently one of the Twin Otters needs urgent repairs, another one is out of action for good, so not too many visitors come here. At the annual Pesta, a big event for the Highlands, almost no Tourists or foreign travellers were to be seen. We caught up with some old Friends and made new ones and generally enjoyed the hospitality of the Bario people. We even met the Supreme Chief of the Kelabits. There was a lot of noise from a bar across the road from Bariew Lodge, which was a negative point.

We found Reddish on the eBario site and basically went with him as he was the only guide who mailed us back.
Although we found his rates for board and hiking reasonable, we were told by locals when we arrived that we were overcharged.
I am vegetarian and the meals prepared for my partner and I were tasty and quite large.
Upon our first hike with Reddish we were impressed, however, things went down hill when we realised we were not doing what we paid for on our itinerary. So we asked for money back, which he finally gave us. He told me that I would find the planned overnight hike to Pa Lungan challenging, and should not go. This could not be further from the truth. I found him to be rude and quietly obnoxious.
The reason Reddish passes his guests on to other guides is that he is NOT a guide, he did not get certification, so it is illegal for him to guide. Of course, he will not tell you that. Guides need a Green Licence from the Sarawak Tourim Board for longer hikes.
We were fortunate that Reddish passed us off to Ridi Lio, a certified guide and childhood friend of Reddish's. He took us to Pa Lungan for an overnight stay and organised our accommodation there. He can be reached by phone at 019855513. He no longer uses email, but farms as well, so is usually available for guides.
Stay clear of Reddish. Arrive at Bario and look up Ridi. You will be glad you did.

We stayed there for three days and enjoyed it very much. The accommodations are basic but homely. The food was good, often too much. The staff was friendly and Reddish, the owner was very helpful. He ended up being our guide for our jungle trek. He had a great deal of knowledge about the jungle and about what goes on in the villages around. He also had a great sense of humor which was much appreciated. The village is small but the people were friendly. There is not a great deal to do in the village itself, however, we knew that when we went.

We had read good reviews of the Bariew Lodge and Reddish, the owner. He picked us up in his 4WD and were surprised when the entrance was a large green tarpaulin covering a rusty iron gate. We were the only guests. The rooms were OK if spartan. We had full board - lunch was passable. The eating area was reached by wobbly stepping stones through the mud with no lighting at night. When we returned from a walk we sat in semi darkness until 6.15 when the generator was started. Dinner was not edible - lumps of cold hard meat with cooked pineapple and cooked cucumber. Showers and toilets were dirty and did not work properly. We turned in early - not much else to do - but a noisy bar opposite kept us awake until 3am with loud laughter, music and motorbikes revving up and roaring off. Breakfast, a rice cakes and biscuits with some ancient peanut butter and jelly was totally inedible. We cut short our stay and fortunately were able to get seats on the first plane out. By Malaysian standards the cost was very high and represented very bad value.
