The Labang Longhouse Lodge/Homestay in Bario is a beautiful longhouse styled guesthouse located 10 mins walk from the airport, 10 mins walk to the market centre, and enjoys a panoramic view of the Kelabit plateau from its wide veranda. From there you get to eat your meals, watch the sunset, enjoy your tea and write your memoirs. The Facility: With 18 rooms, it is the biggest accommodation facility in Bario. Superb for large groups, but cosy enough for the lone traveler. The rooms are clean with warm duvet covers (the nights can get chilly in Bario), ideal for twin-sharing but easily convertible to double beds and big enough for an extra mattress especially for kids. There are fish ponds for guests to fish their meals, and a small garden to pick their greens, if they choose. The lodge runs on solar-powered electricity and has its own conference facilities, thus it is an ideal venue for meetings, retreats, seminars, conferences, workshops and youth camps. Rates: RM120per person/per night. Full board (room + all meals). Activities: Nature Tours - Located on the main route to the highland adventure activities like jungle trekking, camping, kayaking, bird watching, fishing, nature walks, etc. Culture Tours - It is near enough to cultural centres for handicraft making, original longhouse visits, farming experiences, e-Bario internet centre and community hall. The lodge has a resident Certified Tour Guide, and tours to many of Bario destinations and special cultural programs can be organised upon request. Lodge Management: The owners are retired and experienced educators and conservationists, fluent speakers of English, Malay and Kelabit with expert traditional knowledge on culture, history, language, and wildlife. David worked in the creation of many of Sarawak's National Parks and preserved her wildlife and natural heritage during his time in the civil service. If knowledge is what you seek, they are ideal resources for guests and researchers alike seeking knowledge on Bario, it people, and its flora and fauna. In addition, you will be entertained by David's endless repertoire of jokes.

We didn't actually stay at Labang. This was our first trip to Bario and we had booked at another homestay. But during our visit, we came across Labang, and Lian, and felt so comfortable that we decided to engage Lian to be our tour guide. During our day tour, Lian was was very good with our two kids eg helping them to pick local berries. Besides that, Lian is academically well-qualified and knowledgeable and we learnt a lot about Bario.

This is definitely the place to stay if you get the good fortune to go to this area of Borneo. Out hostess was wonderful and cared for us exceptionally well- providing the local food and sourcing motorbikes for us to use over our 3 day stay. The room we have are attached to the longhouse and gave us the use of that area to enjoy. I walked 970 steps from one end of this long house to the other- unique and a must to visit.

Stunning views from the balcony and room windows, very peaceful spot. Lucy, David & family were very kind and we had a brilliant stay with them! Delicious fresh food, most home grown, and lovely walks/cycles to be had all round Bario. Would recommend to all!

Aunty Lucy was very helpful throughout the booking process which was via Whatsapp. I stayed here for a night. There was hot water available as well though the place itself was cool without the a/c and just the wind blowing. Aunty Lucy could arrange tours whenever requested and was always around when you needed her. Overall a worthwhile trip and the hospitality during my stay was extraordinary :)

Great to be back for the second time to enjoy David and Lucy's hospitality. Hot water available and when the modern bathroom is finished will be even better. Relaxing on the deck overlooking Bario is wonderful and the delicious local meals at the communal table a highlight. Hope to see you both again next year Cheers Steve

Me and my husband were travelling to Bario by plane when we met Lucy at the airport in Miri. She pointed out places on the plane out the window and then invited us to stay with her at the homestay. This worked out well for us as we didn’t have a place booked or transport, and Lucy took us in her transport to her home. It was at Lucy and David’s that we learnt the true meaning of ‘homestay’. The family made us feel at home and we ate all our meals together which gave us an opportunity to learn about their lives, and also the history of the kelabit highlands. Both Lucy and David have had fascinating lives and have seen themselves the changes in the highlands; for example the increase and change in transport or the growth from using a blowpipe to guns for hunting, as well as how Christianity changed the area. Lucy gave me an article on her move back to Bario to read and David showed us lots of books too, this helped us understand the area even more. Bario itself is beautiful - our only complaint is that we didn’t stay long enough! Recommendations - climb prayer mountain; trek to Pa Lungan and stay over; trek to the Penang settlements; and jungle trekking. Many thanks Laban homestay. X

Paradise found! Bario in Borneo Central Highlands is a place that you must experience. The friendliest, most peaceful community I have ever visited. Only accessible by a 18 hour car trip through the mountains from Miri or a 45 min flight in a small plane. Lucy and David were our hosts at Labang Long house. Made us welcome and part of the family. Served us beautiful home grown or caught meals. The facilities are basic but in keeping with the experience in a remote area. We totally loved our 3 night stay and miss David's jokes and wicked sense of humour. Will definitely return.
