The room was warm and cosy, but a little bit dark (especially when in the evening and when it was raining). The food was good and the staff very friendly. When we left early (think 6am) to go to the Nature Reservethe owner made us coffee and tea and some toasts. It is great that the hotel is next to...

We spent one night in a really seedy, moldy and dark room. The building itself is really unique and probably used to be nice, but not any more. Staff was more bar oriented, but helpfull and friendly. I had an amazing omelette for breakfast and other food looked amazing too. I also watched a football match from a window while...

If you are staying in San Gerardo prior to doing the climb up Cerro Chirripo then this place is for you. What a total surprise when you go in. Think Swiss chalet with quirky staircases, secret balconies, incredible mountain views to the north and tree foliage to the west, hand carved everything and general awesomeness. It's all here. And $15pppn....

This place looks great but there is no service. People just take care of the bar and restaurant but do not care about the hostel. The bathroom of the room was Dirty and stinky. This is the most awfull place I ve been in costa rica.

Super cool place run by great folks! The cafe now has a roof but it's separate from the walls to make it still decidedly an al fresco experience. But the real magic is found in the hotel rooms. They're built around huge boulders that serve as the walls and ceilings. It feels like Hobbit Land in a friendly shire!

...what a surprise to get to Roca Dura, (it was recommended by Mariposa as they were closed), and be given the most inhospitable treatment I have had in 5 weeks in Costa Rica. The rooms are quaint, but dark, dusky and have wooden floorboards above. At 4.30am staff are walking - or jumping - aggressively on these floorboards so that...

We stayed 2 nights at the Roca Dura Cafe and we loved it. The whole interior and all of the furniture is hand built out of natural rough cut wood and stone. The place is like a piece of art. The atmosphere was very inviting with a warm mix of locals and fellow travelers all gathering at the bar each...

We spent one night at this place. The architecture of whole building and the rooms is very inspiring. The bathroom is simple but clean and the beds have nice matresses. They have a nice river access trail too and you can go swimming there. The restaurant is good exept of the pizza ;)
