Chidambara vilas turned out to be a stunning experience tucked away from the hustle of city. Its a beautiful maintained mansion with history in each and every corner.Added to it the vintage charm in the rooms takes the whole experience to a new level.Service was top notch and Chettinadu cuisines though at a higher price seemed to be worth. Special mention to Priya who is the front office manager for her proactiveness and Mr.Senthil who have managed the whole diwali experience.
Also the staff who served the food has given extra care and attention and very hygenic.
Recommended stay during covid as they take all pre cautions.

The conservative , yet solid and traditional moorings of Chettiars is reflected in the mansions they have built with massive Burmese teak and rosewood, Belgian chandeliers and the like. Their homes and marriages are probably the only exceptions to their unostentatious lifestyle. It is as if the Chettiars liked to outwit one another in the pomp and display of their grand houses, embellished with the best around the world but built traditionally with all Vaastu shastras followed. This place captures the traditional lifestyle in all its details and adds on modern day comforts for the guests. The fact that the cooks and all staff are locals flitting around in traditional veshtis and sarees adds authenticity to the experience. It would be too much to expect a true 5 star experience out of the rustic setting and one must be prepared to savour tradition rather than get disappointed with lack of a proper bar or a typical lunch/dinner menu of a 5 star hotel. Having chosen the place deliberately, one must head long enjoy what is on offer and savour the culture and cuisine. Traditions are followed rigorously with an old women drawing a kolam in front of the mansion, a lady polishing and lighting the almost 5 foot traditional lamp and watering the Tulsi plant in the courtyard. The rooms are huge and air conditioned, though power is intermittent and the generators are in full use. Breakfast is typical Chettinad fare and we enjoyed the steamed aapam, Kuzhipaniyaram and puttu. The traditional utensils used for breakfast, polished and shining is a great sight. The cost of lunch is expensive and one is left with no choice as the place is far off from Karaikudi and there is no alternative. It would certainly help if the cost is looked into so that guests are not left feeling helpless and being forced to consume. The ambience of the dining room is regal. The walk around the village gave a good idea of the local lifestyle and the various palatial houses, some dilapidated and not attended to, reflects the wealth and aspirations of the Chettiars in the centuries gone by. It is astonishing to see such huge palaces in a small village!. The tour of Chidambara Nivas was detailed and gave a complete picture of how the Chettiars respected tradition and Vaastu. It was as if they were constructing a temple. That's probably why these structures have withstood the vagaries of Nature and time.
The place is extremely warm and humid even in late October and one shudders at how it would be during summers, despite the high ceiling. I wish the management has a lot more of pedestal fans all over the place to help guests get over the suffocating heat. One should also not quibble over the occasional honking as the roads are extremely narrow in the village. On the whole, a great place to appreciate Chettiar architecture and cuisine.

This review is overdue by two weeks as I really wanted to spend some time to pen down a meaningful one. When I first came across the option of visiting chettinad region I did wonder whether it was worth visiting a place where the usual trappings of tourism (beach, hill station, adventure activities, amusement avenues etc) are absent. Chidambara vilas was the only one reason to finally embark on our first visit post a lockdown period of 6 months and it was a most welcome decision. The efforts taken by Sangam group to restore and showcase the rich heritage of the Chettiars is commendable. We were warmly welcomed upon arrival by staff, many of whom are locals who identify with the place and are passionate about encouraging local customs. Fredrick gave us a house tour which was both interesting and enlightening. The food, both vegetarian and non vegetarian were top notch both in quality and variety. I had proper full fledged hearty meals on banana leaf after ages without feeling bloated. The kitchen staff were bright, cheerful and cordial. Special mention to sundakkai soup which I tried for the first time here and the yummiest drumstick/moringa (murungakka) soup ever had. The kavuni arisi (black rice) pudding scores over all desserts. I couldn't believe that a dessert could be this simple yet wholesome nutrition too. The sunrise & sunset viewed over the rooftops is a sight to behold. Even the later additions made to expand the main property and modern touches like an elevator have been added thoughtfully and without affecting the heritage stats of property. The customs, traditions, commerce, civil engineering skills, home decor and architectural skills of the Chettiars are amply demonstrated at Chidambara Vilas and I was happy that we chose to stay there despite much more (over) hyped competitors. It must also be said that housekeeping is great and the staff take pains to attend to every need of the guests. Room service was prompt and always accompanied with a smile. Precautions on contact less temperature check prior to check in and sanitization were duly done and kept our minds at ease. The only regret was that we couldn't stay for longer. Three cheers to the team and management of Chidambara Vilas.

Our heritage journey
Winter vacations began and we started our quest for staying in heritage properties. We knew that the Karaikudi belt was famous for old Chettinad bunglaws some of which were converted to hotels. One such property was Chidambara vilas.
Mr.Senthil the GM was very helpful in guiding us..
Driving from Bangalore, it was quite chaotic as fast tags were still in the process of getting deployed. So there were delays in every toll. After Salem, the roads were better and we reached Chidambara vilas at around 2pm..
After the traditional welcome, we were shown to our room which was a modest one with a queen bed with provision for fitting an extra bed. It was quite comfortable. The place was very neatly maintained.
The tour of the palace was given to us by Ms.Priya who was also very accommodating and explained everything with amazing details.
The property was very aesthetically restored without losing any essence of the palace..
While the template of the Chettiar homes was standard there was lot of uniqueness in terms what they acquired and how much they travelled...
Best part of Chidambara vilas was easily their food. At every meal we were just overwhelmed with the variety and taste. Lunch was an elaborate affair featuring vazhai elai. Breakfast and dinner were buffet types with great many choices of traditional south indian food as well as few continental items. The staff manning the kitchen starting from Mr. Fredrick, Ms.Monica and Mr. Saravanan ensured that we were fully fed and rarely made us wait for anything.
We also spent time in the interactive kitchen learning Chettinad Cuisines..
The game room inside the hotel had a pool table and a assortment of indoor games. Also put kids took a kolam class with Vidhya..This was a great way to pass time.
Coffee, tea and snacks were available at request. We also got a daily refill of Chettinad Snacks in our room...
The staff makes a big difference and kudos to Mr.Senthil who treats them like his own family and evident from the people we speak there..
Overall a very satisfying stay for us and we would definitely add this in our list of places to visit again..

We stayed here for 6 days here. This is one of the heritage stays where you absolutely feel at home. Staff especially Dinesh, Fedrick, Priya and resort manager Senthil make us feel pampered at all times.
Rooms are clean and well maintained. Housekeeping team is responsive and courteous.
Food is an experience by itself. It is a feast at all times. There are a variety of traditional authentic chettinad cuisines available. There is a good
variety for both veg and non veg. Best part is food feels homely and no soda is added.
The house tour and village tour is fascinating and makes you want to visit this place again and again.

A neatly renovated Chettiar heritage property, this palatial hotel is an excellent place to stay and experience Chettinad culture. Everything about the stay here was excellent, right from the hospitality staff (Priya and Pandian), the beautiful rooms, the intricate woodwork on the windows and doors, the Burma teak adorned corridors and the distinct courtyards. The dining was an incredible experience in itself. The staff were very courteous (Dinesh and Senthil) and we experienced an array of delectable Chettinad delicacies for breakfast and dinner. The food here should not be missed. There were many other people who made the stay here memorable. In total, the stay here was beyond what we were expecting and was extremely pleasant. A big thank you to everyone.

I'm writing this review after 2 years of staying in Chidambara vilas in Dec 2019.
I'm writing this review because even after 2 years of staying here, this place holds such a nostalgic value in our heart.
It is such a large mansion where you can experience the confluence of heritage and modernity. Heritage is everywhere in the mansion and still your room would be the epitome of luxury with comfortable bed, such large spaces, swimming pool view from the balcony.
Hospitality is such top notch despite not being a chain hotel and we have stayed in some large chain Heritage hotels.
It is a challenge to keep the right mix of luxury and heritage and these guys have maintained that fine line.
Food preferences are deeply personal but if you like South Indian food you will love it. We loved the breakfast spread and especially the love with which it was served. I personally did not like the chicken curries much because chicken pieces are generally bit bony but gravies were great.
There was no Hindi/ English channels on the DTH but on request they provided the channels promptly.
We went by a personal car and hired a guide from the hotel. He had great communication skills and great rapport with all the other heritage hotels as well so we visited all the mansions in Kanadukathan.
This hotel is a bit away from the main town and trust me if you are coming by a personal vehicle than that is what makes this hotel the high rated one. You will feel the exclusivity and the peace. There is ample open parking available. Tamilnadu highways are great as always. Must visit hotel if you like to do something offbeat

I stayed at Chidambara Vilas while on a family road trip through Tamil Nadu. We were a large group of 6, split across 3 rooms, and we largely enjoyed our stay. The hotel’s location was also very handy - in the pretty and characterful Kadiyapatti village that lacked the tourist crowds of more popular spots like Kanadukathan or Athangudi.
My favourite thing about the hotel was its architectural heritage and cultural history. It’s a beautifully restored Chettiar mansion, and every corner has interesting details to discover and appreciate.
I also really liked the thoughtful complimentary activities on offer (heritage walks, Kollam making, and cooking demos), the friendly service (Pandyan at the front office is a real gem, the manager Senthil was always on hand), and the value for money - I’ve paid twice the money at similar heritage properties elsewhere only to come away four times as disappointed.
I feel the hotel can improve a little when it comes to the restaurant. While the Chettinad lunch meals were outstanding, other meals were a bit of a mixed bag. We were also a little taken aback to find the staff sometimes bringing cold dishes or taking too long to get ketchup or seasoning. All issues were addressed immediately when raised though.
All in all, we had a great stay and would really recommend the place for anyone planning a holiday in Chettinad. My only advice would be for those with mobility issues as there are a few steps and levels to navigate.

I have always had it in my bucket list to stay in a proper Chettiar mansion in Chettinad. Part of the Sangam Hotel group who run hotels in Trichy and Thanjavur, this is a luxurious 96 year old heritage property restored to its old glory, staying as close to the original as possible.
The Chettinad region is full of old dilapidated mansions that have seen better days. This is one of the few that have been restored along with all modern amenities. It is a good place to soak in the feel of the place, go for a village walk in the evening, listen to the history and walk around the property. You can also visit Thirumayam fort, Kanadukathan, Karaikudi which are all close by.
The food is authentic Chettinad and I was pleasantly surprised that it was not that spicy. The management and the staff are very friendly and helpful.
I do highly recommend this hotel for a 2-3 day stay.
