Cancelled our dinner reservation on the day with no explanation provided, not much help on the phone nor customer service skills.
Don’t waste your time clearly based on the other reviews you shouldn’t expect anything else!

Booked in February for a stay in September - The Stein Inn took full payment when the booking was made. Like others, I started to worry about 2 weeks before our trip that the inn had not been in touch - every other hotel we booked for our 10 day trip had done so. I phoned every day for a week, sent 3 emails and even contacted Skye tourist office (who were very helpful, but could not confirm that the inn was closed). No answerphone to leave a message - no response to anything. Eventually I lost confidence in them and wrote to cancel and demand a refund. To date I have heard nothing and have started to claim via the credit card company. We went to Skye as planned and went to Stein to see what was going on - The Stein Inn is very firmly closed and there was no sign of any refurbishment going on - unfortunately, no sign of locals to ask either. If the place is just closed temporarily for a refurb, the owners should be ashamed of how they have handled it - I will not be troubling them with my business in future , even if they do open up again in March.

Came here for lunch as we often do, loving the location and atmospheric interior. Had also heard it had been taken over and food improvements prioritised(actually we enjoyed some of the standard staples previously on offer at reasonable prices, smoked salmon salad, marinated herring salad, good soup and bread.)
Quite shocked at the prices when new menus presented - up 30% or so.
Two of us had the Cullen Skink soup (Seafood Chowder it was called on the menu), sprinkled with these awful mass produced croutons - no bread offered; that would have cost us an extra £1.50 each. A bowl of soup usually comes with bread so why the add on? Apart from that, there were the merest slivers of smoked haddock in the soup, which was underseasoned and lacking the rich fishy flavour this soup normally provides.Too much potato not enough fish.
My Caesar Salad - well, the chef should have been embarrassed to have presented it as it was, a travesty of the real thing - 6/7 pieces of Little Gem lettuce with some dressing and that was it in a small bowl and all for £7. It looked like a small side salad.I make this at home, it should have anchovies and freshly grated parmesan shavings on top (not dried parmesan through the dressing) and if made properly, it is a really unctuous, strong tasting treat.Mixed salad leaves too add interest to the whole.Chef - please check Delia Smith's classic version and chuck this one out, pronto.

Ordered 'Steinn Chips' at £4 a bowl expecting freshly prepared , real chips, only to find that they were these awful pre-prepared frozen chips, the kind you have lurking in the freezer at home for dire emergencies.Another travesty of simple, but great food.
The Inn used to do an excellent Fruit Crumble, a real baked crumble and I asked the staff if this was what was still on offer (and for £8 - wow, fine dining dessert prices.) They didn't really know (or hadn't cared to ask or perhaps didn't even understand what this traditional Great British Dessert actually should consist of ).So my little dish of stewed plums (very nice) came with a sprinkled on topping which chefs nowadays seem to think passes for crumble.Awful.
Why are so many short cuts and budget approaches to food being taken by these new owners? Yet prices have gone up considerably.
I'm scrubbing this place off our lunch possibilities now (we are on Skye most months to see family) as it's just not good enough and far too expensive for what's on offer.I'm really annoyed about this and our recent experience as we used to enjoy lunch out here.
My advice to the chef/owners - go to the Applecross Inn for an idea of quality/choice of food and prices.Or even the Carbost Inn on Skye.Or - sorry - get a new chef who is proud of what he serves to customers.

This comes up as a hotel on any search but its best described as a very overpriced B&B at best and just rooms above a pub at worst. Our room was large, but the bed was rock hard with a decor of 90s chintz, no wifi, no TV! and the over-ridding smell of "Eau de Wet Dog"! No TV shouldn't be a problem in a pub-hotel except when we arrived the first thing the barman wanted was payment (always a red flag) and then he shut the bar for 3 hours! As its Skye we should have been able to go for a walk except, when we stayed, there was Force 10 gale blowing with an advisory to stay indoors so what were the guests expected to do?!
The bar/restaurant ignored all Scottish COVID protocols with tables almost on top of one another serving very underwhelming lukewarm seafood and heated up "land" dishes at London prices. However what was worst was the service. The staff were Gen-Zs who clearly thought they were doing the public a favour. I had a lobster salad to start and had to get up to wash my hands afterwards and then during my main course a finger bowl arrived and the waitress, in that way only a Gen-Z can manger, expected a round of applause from our table for remembering! Oh and by the way you have to ask for cutlery ( this restaurant is run by the McDonalds generation after all!) and pay at the bar where the barman tried to charge me for my room again!
The next morning we were at least looking forward t our full Scottish Breakfast only to discover, along with every other reviewer, that its off this year but not advertised. However that was bad enough but when two fellow guests allowed their dogs to run throughout the hotel during breakfast and then have a fight in the bar we knew it was time to leave.
However escaping was more difficult than it should have been as a local had drunk too much in the bar the night before and driven his van headfirst into a drystone wall and abandoned the vehicle. So in order to leave I was picking the stones off the road before we could drive away.
Are we ever going back? What do you think?!

The next time Paul Rankin is on James Martin’s tv programme telling us all about his hotel and restaurant, remind me to take it all with a pinch of salt (pardon the pun). We stayed here for one night on a diversion from the NC500,on a bed and breakfast basis. Above all else and most importantly, the staff were excellent and we have no complaints about them or the food we ate at dinner that night.
However….
Our room had to be heated by an electric wall heater as the central heating wasn’t working.
The electric towel rail in the bathroom wasn’t working.
There was no hot water in the bathroom.
The plugs in the bath and sink were snapped off the chains.
The cold water pipes made an horrendous banging sound when running the tap.
Our ‘double bed’ was in fact 2 single beds pushed together.

The bar had no gas so lager wasn’t available.

We were informed during the evening that breakfast the next morning would only be a Continental-type,even though Full Scottish Breakfast is advertised.
When we dined at breakfast we were sat next to a window where rain was leaking in.

The wifi did not work at all.

It seems to me that the owner has made a big thing of buying the Stein Inn and then completely forgotten about it. We didn’t complain to the staff as it was pointless - they aren’t Electricians,Plumbers or Joiners but they are doing their best.
We paid £160 for one nights B&B - in my opinion,over-charged for what we received, however,no discount was forthcoming.
The Stein Inn is a lovely establishment in a lovely part of the country, but it seems very neglected, which is a real shame.

Quite sad to have written a review like this, but I object to being short-changed in such a way.

Two of us visited for lunch today as we had read various articles and wanted to sample a traditional lochside Inn.
There are no 'lunch' options such as sandwiches, ciabatta or similar so you have to order a starter or main.
My husband chose the moules frites for £15.00 which he enjoyed.
I chose a beetroot and goats cheese salad with walnut plus a side order of chips. The salad contained three slices of beetroot and two scraps of walnut on a bed of nondescript lettuce for £8.00.
The very meagre portion of (looked like frozen) chips were a staggering £4.00!
I don't mind paying over the odds but please make it worth it.
Beer glasses were also very old and scratched.
Altogether a very disappointing experience and one which we won't be repeating!

Visited the Inn after reading good reviews especially with the acclaimed Paul Rankin now the owner. Unfortunately of all the places we ate at whilst on the Isle of Skye this had one of the limited menus and the prices did not reflect the food served. We expected better, high prices all well and good but when you get plate of mince with 4 boiled potatoes for £15 and although fish tastes good the chips out of a frozen bag come on if not careful the reputation Paul Rankin has gained over the years will be ruined which is such a shame. I can accept the shortage of staff but this should not effect the choice and quality of food. The waiter was excellent although not a warm welcome from the older guy behind the bar. Hope It all improves by next year as such a lovely setting.

Best chowder I've ever had. Best hake (with a mild horseradish cream, trio of beetroot, a little salsa verde) too. Tasted like it had just leapt in the window from the spectacular loch out the front. Yummy, salty chips. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. Feels like the place is about to undergo a renovation to match the food, although the austere, atmospheric bones of the place are those of an inn from 1790. But to tell you the truth, I was too busy enjoying myself to notice the decor.
