we really felt welcomed by the local family owners who seem to be planning further upgrades for their property. a clean apartment with good wifi and TV. close to beach, 1 block away. small shop on site. car hire on site, good value and easily arranged. kitchen well equipped for complete self catering although we only used in for breakfast. many local eateries within walking distance. felt safe at all times. peaceful small town, more noise from chickens than traffic! I would go there again. Not for anyone expecting "luxury, could be anywhere, corporate" hotel, support local business and we loved it.

My wife and I stayed 4 nights in March, 2006 at Syd-Ans after reading a travel report on Anguilla in the Washington Post that referenced Syd-Ans. The price was very inexpensive especially for Anguilla, about $95 per night.

An important fact to know is that when you stay at Syd-Ans you are staying in a neighborhood; this has both pluses and minuses. The pluses are the friendliness and helpfulness of the neigbors who kind of hang out with Anne Edwards, the proprietor of Syd-Ans. Everyone makes you feel very welcome. The downside is that at times the noise level at night can be fairly high. One night of our stay a neighboring resident kept loudly imploring his wife to let him in, his loud pleas went on until 2:30 a.m. and made it difficult to sleep. There are other noise factors to also be aware of, the area of Sandy ground (where Syd-Ans is located) has the island's only cargo pier and trucks can come and go into the wee hours of the morning unloading cargo. The noise can carry across the salt pond that backs up to the Syd-An units.

The unit we stayed in was a called a "duplex", on the second floor, that type of unit basically consists of a large, high ceiling room with a loft for a sleeping area (Syd-Ans also has several other room configurations). The front door of the unit opens onto a small internal court yard area; the back door opens onto a balcony overlooking a large shallow salt pond. The downstairs area of the unit has a full kitchen and living room with tile flooring and a bathroom with a marble tile shower. The upstairs loft area had a queen size bed and a second bathroom with a tub and a shower unit. The unit was generally clean although there was a significant amount of deferred maintenance e.g. windows without screens or windows that won't open. The carpeting in the loft area was a bit worn but nothing really terrible.

The unit had ceiling fans but no air conditioning; however there was always a cool breeze off the salt pond in the back (after we managed to get some upper windows to open) so there was no need for ac. There was also cable TV for both the upstairs and downstairs TV; there is no telephone in the unit. All in all the unit was spacious and comfortable.

There is a beach at Sandy Ground, a few hundred yards away and although it is a nice enough beach my wife and I did not spend any time there since there are numerous fabulous beaches elsewhere on Anguilla. There are also a number of good and reasonably priced restaurants in the Sandy Ground area that are within easy walking distance of the Syd-Ans. The central location of the Sandy Ground area makes Syd-Ans a good location to stay at since all parts of the island are accessible. My own opinion is that Syd-Ans is best utilized as a home base for exploration of the island rather than a destination itself.

In summary, Syd-Ans is an incredible bargain if one has adjusted expectations. This is not a resort but a base from which to explore the island and it has its own idiosyncracies. Anne Edwards and the people at Syd-Ans are incredibly nice; so there is the added
benefit of seeing your tourist dollar going directly into the island economy rather than to a corporation running a resort. Overall, I can recommend Syd-Ans with the caveats described above.

Syd ans accommodation is in the perfect location for those who want a beach within 200 feet of the door and a choice of restaurants within minutes walk. It is a simple accommodation and this is clearly reflected in the price. However, for those who do not need the luxuries that many of the hotels offer, it is a perfect choice. I stayed there 3 times for 4-6 weeks at a time over the past few years. I now live in Anguilla full time. I think the location best suites younger travellers as it is in close proximity to the main night life on the island, that being Johnnos bar and grill on the beach, Ripples bar and restaurant and the famous Pump house which serves great food and has live music 3/4 nights a week.
Ann Edwards is hospitable but by no means on top of you. you can come and go as you please, it is extremely casual and for me this was perfect. She can organise car rental if necessary and has just completed refurbishments which take the interiors to a very acceptable standard.

Anne Edwards is not your normal Anguillian. She has no sense of honesty or friendliness. My wife and I went to Anguilla for our honeymoon. Our expectations were very real and I learned all I could about the Island.

Everything went smooth until we showed up (with a reservation) to find we had no place to sleep. She didn't save me a room! New island, new wife, new problem. Anne Edwards only question was "What do you want with me?". Excuse me, but a roof over my head for the next two weeks would be nice.

I was astounded by the lack of responsibility she had for the situation. I had even called two weeks prior to the trip. Yes, she had a room. Yes, she still had my information.

Stranded, she wouldn't even help to find another place for us. Making a few calls were too much for her to cope with late in the afternoon. We were on our own.

I have Lloyd's Bed and Breakfast to thank for saving me that first night. They were everything true Anguillian hospitality has to offer. Recommend them any day of the week.

Go to Anguilla, visit Sandy Ground and avoid Sydans.

Response from sydans, Front Office Manager at Sydans Apartments and Villas
Responded 25 Jan 2011
This review is very hard to believe, because during last year we have never been fully booked, so I can't believe that actually happened and I would have remembered if it did. I also have my reservation logs to show that we have never been fully booked last year.

It's cheap - feels cheap.
It's a dump - but the rooms are huge.
It's dirty - but close to a beach, bars and lots of free parking.
The doors and windows don't really lock - but it seems safe
Has free wireless - very slow
When you return home you will wash everything - including your suitcase.
You will totally forget about how bad it is when you visit Meads Bay or Shoal Bay

This place has so much potential, if only the owner actually cared about the business. Reserved a room for 10 days however upon check in, knew that one night was too many!!
Room was very large with lots of potential.....however, fridge not working, no hot water, a dribble of cold water, dirty towels in the bathroom, dirty sheets on the bed and no working a/c. Not a care in the world from management when all issues was brought to attention, ended up staying at a beautiful residence instead!!

Do not waste your time or money here!!!!

This is our 4th year staying at Sydan's. I will tell you this. If you are on a budget and don't mind clean, yet set in the 80's, then you will be okay. The thing about Anguilla is its expensive so if you want to stay there yet don't have thousands of dollars for a place to stay then this is a great option. However, don't expect bell boys, front desk people or elevators. Sometimes there is no one there to check you in so you have to call Ann on her cell phone so be prepared for that. We love staying here because it is informal. It feels like home in some ways. Could it use updating? Sure but then her prices will go up and it will no longer be budget friendly.

Our stay this year was great except for a few snags. The internet was fabulous this year which is a huge change from other years. However, every time we have stayed there, she always has us move rooms & I have to say, while it isn't horrible, when I am staying somewhere I like to get settled. Another situation, which isn't her fault at all, is the toilet in our upstairs loft ended up plugged. Apparently someone with a child stayed in it before us & we believe a toy or something was put down it. Thankfully we had a second toilet downstairs because that toilet didn't really work the whole time we were there. So anyone booking here better get visions of grandeur out of your head before you arrive. Sydans is clean and comfortable but nowhere near fancy but you definitely feel welcome and that's what counts in my books.

This is the place to stay while on a budget. Anguilla is a very expensive island with some world class resorts. However, if your thing is eating local, hanging on the beach, beach bars and doing your own exploring, Sydans is the way to go.
No it is not modern and it is set in the 80's. But the rooms are clean and in the end that is all that matters. We only slept and showered in the room. But, it was nice having the kitchenette and the fridge. The convenience store out front also helped make supplies a little easier. They are currently renovating a room and I am sure more are to follow. Like anything, it takes time, but then the price may go up.

To call Sydans 4 star is a joke. To say it is in Island Harbor is more of a joke. This rundown flophouse is on Sandy Ground and should be avoided Twenty years ago it had good potential but bad management has made it an embarassment to the Anguilla hotel industry

I'm a regular visitor to this little Island, I hardly miss a Moonsplash and love all that the island has to offer. Every time I stay with aunty Ann, I often call the day before and there is always room for me and my friends. The place is just a simple but well look after guest house, so don't expect to pay little money and receive 5 stars service or facilities. Actually having such a huge space with A/C, TV, Fridge, fully equipped kitchen, balcony and feel safe to leave doors open and sit for a drink with fellow holidaymaker, is just priceless... She makes me coffee in the morning if I have none, always have a kind word and care if I need anything that she doesn't have... really, excellent value for money. Getting home a bit drunk and happy from a night at Pumphouse or Elvis, Johnno's and the fun of Sandy ground on the door step. Car alway parked within 5 yard, 15 minutes from all of the 33 beaches, and I can go on untill Tripadvisor will allow me to write... If you want to experience Anguilla the Anguilla way, that's the place to stay... I read some other comments probably written from unhappy people that shouldn't even be allowed to leave their own countries.

One Love.

My daughter also went to medical school and stayed at Sydans for the full 16 months. We looked around at some other places and liked the location and service that Sydans had to offer. Felt comfortable leaving her with Ann when she left.

unless you stay at a luxury hotel like cap or cuisi or malli and are willing to eat there for all your meals, a car is a must in anguilla. or at least so we have found in our twenty five plus years of visits.
