So much for escaping after 15 months of hibernation to enjoy 6 luxury nights of 5 star imaginative food and wine, where we did not have to lift a finger to cook, prepare or serve. Architecturally Qualia is beautifully designed but the food, service and"art of hospitality" were sadly missing. Staff were young, well groomed and smiling but lacking in any idea of service standards for a so called 5 star resort. No one seemed to have had any real hospitality training. The food was abysmal. At dinner in the Long Pavilion on the first night, the hot seafood platter at $200 , consisted of five seafood dishes plonked on the table at the same time. The scallops and the Coral trout were edible, but the barbecued prawns were overcooked to extinction and lay cooling at the table with the other two unappetising and unmemorable dishes. Service was slow and empty dishes stood forlornly looking at us for some time before they sent someone to take away the dirty dishes at our request. Breakfasts could require waiting time in the lounge before they could find you a table, even though there were empty tables available. When you sit down they present an unappetising looking large wooden breadboard on your table with one each of a mixture of tired unripe melons with sometimes a sour passionfruit, Danish, yoghurt Meusli etc. The wooden block stayed on the table for the duration of your breakfast as no-one removed dirty dishes from the small table until asked to by the guests. Avoid the Eggs Benedict at all costs unless you brought with you a steak knife to cut the piece of leather they called a bun. The Pastry chef is good. His croissants ( but you have to ask them to be warmed) were reliable fodder. Coffee was good but took a long time coming and rarely arrived as requested to sip with the croissants or Eggs Benedict. As it was raining we ordered room service lunch which apparently came from the only other restaurant Pebble Beach. The Wagyu Beef burger was edible as it had to feed two. The chicken burger was like cold inedible hard leather, so again we wished we had brought a steak knife. The empty dishes from this lunch stayed outside our Leeward Pavilion waiting for collection for 2 days. Our final degustation dinner at Pebble Beach was $429 with one bottle of wine , (without taking the extra "selected wines" at over $100 per head). The waitress had learnt the menu off rote and spoke so fast we had to ask her to repeat several times. There were only 3-4 tables full. One table next to us arrived and walked out as soon as they saw the menu. Our waitress managed to get the chef to change some squid ink dish for us to duck slices as we were a bit "over" locally caught seafood from our first dinner. What a disappointment Qualia was for experienced travellers. We had high hopes of Qualia becoming our luxury Australian bolthole for short breaks while our borders are still closed... but that will not be the case for us.

Room Tip: Our leeward pavilion had no view of water at all. Just bush trees and bird activity. No sun on...

Now this review may seem harsh as I absolutely loved staying at Qualia. The staff, the food and the resort overall were stunning. What was frustrating is that none of the restaurants on the island outside the hotel were available to take a dinner reservation for 2 adults. They were ALL booked out for the 5 nights we stayed!!!!! This has to be terrible management of the overall island management team. If you don’t have enough staff to open all the restaurants and accommodate the people booked into the resort then where should they eat? We met a family who were told they had the Pizzeria or fish and chips, this really is an insult as your only meal option for a family. We retreated back to Qualia for our meals as we had no other option. It should be noted on the islands website and they should advise you when you make a reservation. Maybe a solution is to leave a % of seats open for people who are booked into your resort and don’t have a kitchen to cook meals? Just terrible island management and put a real dampener on what could have been an amazing holiday.

Had a two nights stay at Qualia primarily for relaxation after an year long of continuous work ! Our room had a pool , great big size balcony , bedroom with great ocean views. Overall definitely a relaxing environment. We got seamless airport pickup and transport to the resort. A buggy to drive all around for whole time. We had breakfast that was great. One night dinner at Pavilion. Food was good, fresh, light. We didn’t order much one dish each, so was not much pricey. Customer service was great. Place was full still team was managed to fit everyone for breakfast with new Covid norms. One thing ! Room service... we wanted the room to be cleaned, called main desk few times no response. Went to main desk asked for clean up service, still no one came to clean the room. That’s all. It is expensive but won hidden charges, so you know upfront what you paying for.

My wife and I stayed at Qualia for four nights at the end of March for our 25th Wedding Anniversary and it was absolutely brilliant. Prior to staying, Madeline helped us book in all our activities, so that we would not miss out on anything. When we arrived we were welcomed by Taylah with champagne and the most amazing view from Long Pavilion. From the start we were made to feel special and welcomed. The Leeward pavilion we stayed in was spectacular with a great view over Dent Island. We especially loved the turndown service where we were given tea, to get us ready for a wonderful night’s sleep. We had access to a golf buggy which was fun and spend our day relaxing by the pool at pebble beach. The food was delicious and we enjoyed trying the testing menu as well as the al-la-cart menu, both served in Long Pavilion. The sunsets there were beautiful. Not that everything went our way, we had a few tours cancelled due to high winds, which was really disappointing - but staying at Qualia meant that the alternate option of sitting in such a beautiful place, by the pool with lovely staff - was a pretty awesome alternative. We hope to be back and are thankful for our time there.
