Nice place, decent venue. Unfortunately the rooftop bar was closed when we went so will have to go back when the top floor is open. The staff were nice enough, the happy hour has some of the best prices in the CBD. There are trees and plants on the balcony where we sat which was nice in the middle of...

Attempted to meet a few friends in the bar (which apparently was empty) before going elsewhere for dinner. The doorman said I was not allowed to go in as I didn't have a booking, even though I was just going to be standing with some friends at the very quiet bar for twenty minutes at most. However, the doorman couldn't...

Last couple of months it's had a new menu. Possibly new owners as well. All the old traditional pub favorites are gone replace by plant based equivalents. Could be fine to try but not with a hungry family expecting what they had on the last visit. Not all is lost that is the beautiful thing about Melbourne around the corner...

Great Venue with food and roof top bars. We were in a group of about 30 for dinner, it was loud for any form of speeches but the food was good, drinks flowed and once upstairs, the night really kicked along. Great Vibe through the place.

I have gone to the Carlton multiple times as it is one of my favourite bars in Melbourne. I went again a few days ago and unfortunately en counted such rude security guards. We were celebrating a birthday, until a security guard came over and told us we had to leave... we 100% had done nothing wrong and he wouldn't...

Look for the garden above your head, then head into the discreet little doorway, up a handful of stairs, and into a wonderland. Dimly lit, with quirky features (you have to see the animals!!) this is a fun place to enjoy a drink, served by super friendly staff.

If there is one thing I cannot condone, it is rude staff. A security guard checking IDs on the door was incredibly rude to my friend, who had drunk ONE beer during a meal out that we had just come from. He then proceeded to be incredibly rude to me. My friend had had one beer and the bouncer's assessment...

Go for the Vegetarian Monday night! Delicious eggplant with popped quinoa, roasted carrots , pumpkin and honey croquettes and tomato, fried chickpea and apple vincotto! Beautiful, all organic and ridiculously reasonable. This is only on Monday nights. On other nights it is pub fare but good pub meals. Often it gets quite busy here but the service is friendly -...

Attended a function here (several flights up in the 'jungle' area). Before the function started we had a drink upstairs and outside. This was very pleasant on a summer's evening. Inside it was quite dark - probably just as well as the decor was a bit tired, although we did enjoy sitting next to the elephant! The house bubbles were...

Every time I've been here the bar staff have been unjustifiably rude and arrogant. The last time I was there it was early for dinner after work. There were probably about 15 people inside the whole place including the staff. I went to the bar to look at the menu and order food and one of the girls came over...

Staying in Central Business District

Neighbourhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
