Wasn't sure what to expect, had the room with shared bathroom and breakfast included. Pleasantly surprised, room was reasonably big and clean, the little extras like coffee bags instead of instant and decent toiletries were great. The shared bathroom was clean and was less inconvenient...More
Stayed at Sophia in February 2014.
I had previously read some of the mixed reviews and was unsure whether booking this place was a good idea.
I was, however, pleasantly surprised by standard and value.
This is an inner city hotel at country rates.
By reading the reviews you could be forgiven for thinking you are going to stay in hell, but it is not that at all.
Yes - service is thin on the ground. But if you expect it and show some patience, it's fine. Not having...More

Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air
of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.

Gday. I think they have a policy of a deposit taken from the credit card for everyone which is held. I checked my bank online and it was taken as "pending", but never went through as a charge. But ask them if youre unsure. I... More
Gday. I think they have a policy of a deposit taken from the credit card for everyone which is held. I checked my bank online and it was taken as "pending", but never went through as a charge. But ask them if youre unsure. I know they are not great communicators but they were honest with me and I didn't get any deduction.
Hope this helps.
