For what we paid ($70 a night) we got what we paid for. The room was either too hot or too cold, very plain room. Right next to Speights pub which was handy for a feed and a drink. Staff seemed nice. Had to pay for wifi which we weren't happy about and is unheard of in a backpackers.

The beds were comfortable but my friend and I were on a kind of mezzaine above the bunk beds which were difficult to climb up to without disturbing people sleeping, as we had to climb on their mattresses. The showers were cold and not very strong, but the bathrooms were clean. Theres a big kitchen area but not much of...

We stayed here for a weekend in a double room. Its a large accomodation, and well set up. The kitchen was great, and there is plenty of room for all sorts of people. We were glad not to be disturbed by the drunken party in the kitchen on the Saturday night, as it seemed to be well sound proofed. The...

We stayed here for a week to hike in and explore Tongariro National Park. The room was clean and everything worked well. Kitchen was well set up with lots of storage space. No problems with several groups trying to make a meal at the same time. Common areas were a great place to visit. Staff were very helpful and knowledgeable...

Stayed here with a couple of friends in late September this year before and after doing a two day tramp of the Tongariro Northern Circuit. There were 7 of us and they put us up in an 8 bed dorm which was clean and comfortable. The shared toilets were also clean and had hot showers. They have a well equipped...

After checking out two other more upmarket hotels/motels in NP that didn't seem too interested in whether I stayed or went I stopped by the National Park Hotel (corner Carroll and Ward, not the YHA of similar name) and was warmly greeted by the owner / new manager John, who has recently taken over after booting out the previous leaseholders...

We briefly stayed in the area as we were passing through the North Island. Staff were very helpful although there was a mixup with the booking due to the other backpacker facility being full. Once sorted we checked into the room for some well deserved rest. The facilities are basic with a shared bathroom, there is a pool table &...

When I stayed here the hostel was full due to a running event. There was still more than enough space to move around and to find a quite place. The interior is a bit old but everything was clean enough to use it. It is a great location to use as a base for the tongariro trekking. Had a good...

“getting an ensuite with a double room would be preferable, as there is a distance to walk to the bathrooms, and ground floor has foot traffic above it, so better to be upstairs”

“I stayed in room 8, which was close to the main entrance and facilities. Was quiet at the time but might be noisy if the bar is busy. Room has a basin and mirror, heaters, and closet. Comfy double bed.”
