I previously stayed twice at Pentlands backpackers down the road in Mt. Eden but since they were no longer around and I was coming from (via a 2 week road trip with Intercity from Queenstown) the UK, I thought I better pick a place around Auckland that I knew best...and I sure know Mount Eden village. The place itself is...

Me and my boyfriend spent two night at Bamber House. It was the most cosy hostel I've ever been to. It really felt like a home, the atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming. It was above our expectations. We even got towels on our beds so we didn't have to use our own to shower. Everything was up to standard and...

Thanks for that. We try to create a home away from home atmosphere with a New Zealand twist. Having such an amazing old home is a good start. The house is over 100 years old and is a grand old lady. We are lucky to have some of the original features including a lovely old staircase.

I stayed here for 5 nights at the start of my travels around New Zealand, and I have to say I was impressed. Firstly, I broke my phone here - the girls at reception were very helpful in pointing me in the right direction to get it fixed and even helped get me a bag of rice in the first...

Thanks for the review I will send the staff on a spider hunt. Auckland has been rather crazy short of accommodation this summer but we have tried to keep some beds for guests wanting to stay longer. We hate moving people around rooms but somethimes it is the only way. Thanks for the staff feedback. I know they appreciate it.

Very nice hostel, everything was clean and tidy and the staff were both helpful and welcoming. Beds were good and wifi was great. It was mentioned that there were activity nights going on throughout the week but the only one I noticed was the quiz night which did attract a fair amount of people and encouraged socialising which is always...

We have some sort of activity three or four times a week but they are usually fairly low key like a movie night with free popcorn or a pizza evening. The quiz night is always a favourite. We are about 3km from downtown but the free carparking, garden area and local amenities usually win out in the balance. This sort...

Was a good place to stay nice and close to local shops and cafes. Only a $9 uber right into town. Friendly atmosphere and great staff and great facilities. Had the added bonus of an attractive receptionist. Cheers.

Thanks for that. Our staff appreciate the feedback especially when it is like that. Usually they just get helpful. We are also between Mt Eden village which is majorly into cafe culture and Dominion Road which is full of ethnic and alternative restaurants. Not to mention banks, post offices and supermarkets.

Hostel is well located; lots of stuff to do within walking distance. The place is also quite clean. We had stayed in one of the cabins behind; well-worth the amount that we paid for. Staff attitude - felt could have been a bit better - not that they were rude; but didn't find them very friendly either. Lots of rules...

Thanks for your comments. We take reviews seriously and appreciate the time it takes to review places. We are in the midst of training new staff which puts a bit of pressure on everyone. Also being high season it is sometimes hard to be available for friendly conversations. We try to keep notices to minimum and are looking at ways...

I just live 2mins away from the hostel, got a room for me and my friend to stay as she came for visiting. Very handy area as you can walk or take bus easily to centre. Staff was friendly, room was clean and got everything we need with a reasonable price. Recommended!!!!

Thanks for your business. We appreciate local recommendations. We love Mt Eden both the mountain and the friendly neighbourhood vibe.

Our experience staying at Bamber house was not the best. The common areas are lacklustre and although cleaned, still felt quite dirty. The place needs a good spring clean inside and outside. We didn't even go into to TV room as it appeared many of the guests were actually sleeping in there on the couch? We stayed in the cabin rooms...

I can't help feeling that maybe you would be happier in a motel or hotel. We wash the duvets between every guest and feel this is more hygienic than having a top sheet. thanks for bringing out attention to the fridge which has been fixed. The main house is 100 years old and it was repainted and had a new...

We liked the house and the room, it was clean and comfortable. However, the hostel is full of reprimanding notices and warnings to wash dishes, not to lose keys and a lot of other things, which makes you feel less like a paying guest and more like a student at a boarding school. I think the staff's attitude could really...

Thanks for your comments on the notices. Staff can get a bit carried away at times. We will review this. We have recently made some of the outside communal areas Smokefree and have a few more signs up than normal. I am glad you found things clean and comfortable. I am surprised that we were the only place you found...

I have been to few hostels around Auckland, but this one was one of best. Overall evaluation - helpfull and friendly staff, comfy beds, young vibe, big kitchen and living area, free parking. Honestly, I have nothing bad to say about Bamber House. Would definitely recommend this place. Keep up doing great work!

Thanks for your comments. My staff appreciate the feedback. We provide an alternative to the busy, impersonal inner city hostels. We are one of the few hostels in Auckland which has a car park which is a bonus for our guests with cars. Being is a lovely residential area like Mt Eden helps.
