Everything about this lodge is done with care, and attention to detail and comfort! The staff couldn't have been nicer, more engaging or accommodating. We stayed in Room #3 and the views of the lake through floor-to-ceiling glass walls were lovely and peaceful. The linens were soft, and the blankets, fluffy towels and pillows plentiful. Our room had every imaginable...

We stayed 3 nights in a family suite with full length living room and bathroom windows overlooking Lake Tarawera. Dawn and twilight were the best times to watch the light changing in the sky and swans with cygnets gliding across the lake below, with birdsong in the background. Days were spend kayaking on the lake, searching for nesting swans amongst...

Solitaire was our first stop on a recent visit to New Zealand. What a fantastic way to start. Wayne, the owner is great and could not do enough for us. Our room in the main lodge was spectacular with astounding sweeping views. The food was outstanding with great breakfasts (the croissants are beyond delicious) and dinners were wonderful and the...

This was a happy landing after Auckland. Tucked away on Lake Tarawera, it's a destination in itself. Wish we had explored the lake more. We were in Room 5 which was large, floor to ceiling window wall, with balcony and view of the water. Felt spacious and airy. I think the better water views would have been on the other...

Beautiful setting, perched on a hill overlooking Lake Tarawera. Our room, number 5, was large and well furnished. There was a mostly private balcony which also looked out over the water. The staff was terrific and the food beyond fantastic. The only issue I might have with Solitaire is its isolation. The road, though paved, is very twisty turny. I...

Just our luck we met up with friends from Canada who were staying at this luxury lodge at the same time we were in the area, very impromptu. We joined them for dinner and were overwhelmingly impressed by the gracious hospitality including knowledgeable insight from the owner about the area's history before being treated to a mouthwatering array of delightful...

Booked for lunch. Asked if we had any dislikes. Welcomed at door. A table and view to die for. Delicious entré of smoked salmon followed by steak cooked to perfection. My wife had the fish. All dishes with a subtle twist but not overpowering. Brûlée, coffee and wine. Most memorable for all the right reasons. Many thanks

My husband and I were travelling across NZ (both islands) for an entire month, staying in luxury lodges. The Solitaire website looked inviting, the Trip Advisor reviews were mostly excellent, so we had high expectations from this property. The location is really incredible with the rooms facing the lake. However dirty windows with spider webs, and a tinted layer on...

Totally enjoyed our three nights at Solitaire despite awful weather. The Solitaire Suite has amazing unobstructed views of the lake and historic volcano from both the living room and bedroom areas, with floor to ceiling windows and comfortable furnishings. Service was great - attentive and caring - and the dining was fantastic. Overall, an excellent lodge if staying in the...

Solitaire is really a boarding house with public rooms decorated in a late 1950s UK style in various shades of beige. It has a nice terrace with tables and chairs resembling a pub garden but which could do with an overhaul. It does however have stunning views overlooking Lake Tarawera and the volcano of the same name. In short the...
