We visited the campsite in November, and really loved it. It is situated right on the lake, away from the business of Rotorua. It is relatively easy to find; simply drive down Millar Rd (coming from Rotorua), past Boyes beach. The campsite is located at the end of the road. Beware though, space is limited. So you might find yourself...

We ended up staying here for 3 nights. Was so beautiful and quiet. No running water and a long drop- smelly, however very very clean. Was a pleasant stay and super close to Rotorua town, campsite easy to access and find.

We arrived just before dark, and managed to get ourselves sorted before the darkness fell. It is a beautiful location, althought it was slightly difficult to find. There is a long-drop toilet and a basin to wash dishes etc outside of the toilet. There is also an eating area with a roof, so perfect for rainy days. It was a...

Visited this campsite for the day in 2015 and decided we would like to camp there in the future. Stayed there in February this year for a night. It is a beautiful place surrounded by natural bush. The lake is clean and safe. It is a great swimming spot, good for water sports as well. The toilets are clean and...

We stayed with two small tents for two nights. Be aware it is a basic site with no running water, closed vault toilets and take your rubbish with you. But it's very well looked after and the warden is friendly. Absolutely beautiful, plenty of people swimming in the lake. Worth it for the sunrise. Conveniently located for Rotarua. Highly recommended....

This was our first DOC site in New Zealand and we had a pleasant stay, it can get very busy at times and on the night we stayed it was full and the grass area completely covered in tents. The view of the lack was stunning and this is a must stay at site if you are in the area,but...

I have just spent a few days here camping with friends. What a great spot to stay. There are "closed vault toilets" which are keep very clean, a shelter if need to cook under. No running water and it is a "take your rubbish in and take your rubbish out" area. Two basins have been set up to wash dishes...

Super busy all long weekend, but that's to be expected with such good weather! Don't think it would usually be so busy! Really nice location on the lake and close to other lakes. Good spot to swim. Saw some people cliff jumping at a spot to the right if you're into that. Clean toilets and good area for cooking. Have...

This is a really beautiful spot, and well worth the extra bit of driving. It does get really busy so make sure you arrive early (before 6pm if possible) to get a space, especially if you're in a van. Views are brilliant and you can swim if you want. Facilities are limited to three long-drop toilets - no water, no...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Lake Okareka Campsite is only 15 minutes from Rotorua city and allows budget camping in a secluded lakeside setting. The campsite is stunningly beautiful, with level parking looking over the lake, good fishing, and very peaceful. There is limited room at the campsite, and is not suitable for vehicles over 6 metres in length. Tent sites are available on a first come, first served basis, and cannot be pre-booked. Facilities include toilets and a cooking shelter. Water comes from the lake and must be boiled before drinking. Head east out of Rotorua on SH 30 towards Whakatane for approx 1.7 Km. Take a right turn onto Tarawera Rd at the large roundabout, then left onto Okareka Loop Rd. When you reach the settlement of Okareka turn left onto Millar Rd. The turn-off to the Okareka campsite is on the right where the seal ends (access to the campsite is sealed). ... more   less
