I stayed here on a Christmas trip with some friends. Maybe I'm jaded because I've recently had a not-so-great hostel experience, but I was impressed with this little hostel. I liked that it was small - it felt more intimate and casual then some of the larger ones I've been in. The guy who checked us in was friendly and helpful, with great suggestions for things to see and do. The room was clean and spacious for the number of beds. The kitchen was small but efficient, we were supplied with towels, and the rooftop lounge with a hammock, picnic table, and views of the water were a pleasant discovery. The bike rental was fairly priced and a good option. the location was great! If I pass through here again, I'll definitely be looking this place up.

This hostel is by far one of the most friendly hostel I have stayed in and I'm traveller of 3 years so this is saying something. The building it old, but it make the experience authentic and cosy. My company booked us here for a 2 week work trip and with it bein central location it made it easy and convenient to everything we needed including being a 2 min walk to the Beach. The staff went above and beyond to ensure our stay was good as it could be and the Manager and did everything he could to accommodate our stay and make sure we was happy throughout our stay. We are a group of 13 in total and the staff have been very good to all of us where as most places take a instant disliking to big groups staying in hostels but here is different to that and Ariki backpacker welcomes everyone in a friendly mannor. 10 out of 10 for this place and thanks for having us we will be back.

My friend and I stayed at Ariki during our short stay in New Plymouth and we absolutely loved it. The staff was so friendly and funny, the beds were really comfortable and the location can’t be beat. Will definitely be back!

Great hostel right on the water. Great view from the balcony. Has excellent staff and a great vibe. Rent a bike or scooter from the hostel and check out the boardwalk. Downstairs is a great bar serving excellent food and has the best action on weekends.

This hostel is just a bunch of whole furnitures thrown in together.

There was NO SECURITY at all, NO LOCKS ON THE DOORS, and a smelly dog was wandering about the whole place which was not sanitary.

The bunks don't have any ladder to climb up, so I had to hop on a desk to prop myself up on my upper bunk. The furnishing makes no sense: two desks in a backpackers? BUgger them out and replace them with shelves or closets...

It feels old and musty, many long-term guests that behave like they own the place. Upside was being refunded the 2nd night I had booked because I changed my plans at the last minute.

Amazing backpackers! The staff, especially Rob, are really friendly and helpful. The hostel is well equipped and the rooms are a good size and are all unsuite. Everyone there is really friendly. The hostel is right in the centre of town, so you are opposite the museum and i-site. Would definitely recommend staying here.

I stayed two nights in a 6 bed dorm with bathroom. The rooms are tiny. There isn't enough room for 6 beds and 6 backpacks it was a very tight squeeze. I suggest they make them 4 bed rooms I would of stayed longer if they were. Ensuite was great to have. Although the light wasn't working in my bathroom so we had a shifty floor lamp that wasn't bright enough. I mean not hard to fix. I didn't use any of the other facilities so I can't comment on this. Free wifi was great and it is in a great location. The customer service was fantastic too.

Staff were outstanding with friendly greetings and a great attitude. The family room was good value for money. Our only issue was the bar located below our bedroom window that meant 'our family' didn't get much sleep on the busy bar nights!

I stayed at ariki for two nights and really enjoyed my time there. The location was absolutely perfect for getting around town without a car because it's right in the city centre. The staff are immediately very friendly and take the time to get to know you and show you around. Genuinely awesome local guys. The facilities are clean, kitchen is stocked and while it's fairly dated it is well maintained. Beautiful rooftop patio and cheap laundry! I would definitely stay here again.

Probably one of the quietest hostels I've visited so far (but I have just come from QLD Australia!). The staff were soooooo friendly! Walked in and showed me around, the woman who I met at reception knew exactly what the guys were doing in the room I was staying in which shows she talks to everyone. Instantly made me feel welcome. I had an amazing time walking to the bridge and climbing the rock with friends I met in the hostel. Who I've recently met up with recently too and seem like they will be friends for a long time. VERY clean, no smell, well organised and beautiful balcony. Thanks a lot Ariki B! (Wifi isn't 100% but who needs wifi anyway!! There was a library right next door with free wifi anyway)
