This was my least favourite hostel during my time in NZ - the only saving grace are the friendly hosts. I booked it based on all the positive reviews but now I'm wondering if we were at the same hostel. Another reviewer pointed out the noise - not the fault of the hostel - but you can hear everything (footsteps,...

Loved our stay here, great facilities and friendly staff. Only problem is the walls are super thin so noise seems to be a problem. We are heavy sleepers so didn't mind too much but it is super loud even from people walking down the corridors. Not for light sleepers but fantastic otherwise.

I stayed here for one night and it was a good night's sleep, but I don't think the dynamic was for me. It had a ton of beds meaning that it could accommodate groups of people, so many of the people in the public area already knew each other and stuck to their groups. With so many people it was...

The room was nice and warm, even with the outside temperatures dropping to below 0° C. The staff were helpful. The common areas such as the kitchen were kept very clean. There were a couple of niggles. One of the showers was not working, one of the mens toilet doors would not lock and the plastic heating duct grills in...

Stayed here with a couple of friends for 2nights. Great little backpackers. Stayed in a 5dorm ensuite. Room was nice and had enough room for 5people and their luggage. Very clean and tidy. There was a great kitchen and lounge area. Plenty of space to cook your dinner. Staff were friendly and helpful. One of my friends went on a...

I stayed for two nights at here in a 9-bed dorm room and it was very pleasant. The room, kitchen, and toilets were very clean. The pillow and bed were very good. Bunk bed was very sturdy, they even had little lamp beside your bed if you want to read in your bed (plus point!). They also had free spices. I...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Hi and welcome to Taupo's original and favourite backpackers. Rainbow lodge was purpose built and designed for the needs of travellers by Mark Dumble (fishing expert??) and Sue Mrozinski themselves seasoned travellers. They had spent several years on the world's highways and by-ways and having accommodation experiences that are sometimes described as "Character Building" they settled in Taupo famous for its Rainbow Trout and beautiful scenery. Having had my own character building experiences I came to rest at Rainbow lodge and worked closely with them for a year before they handed me the reigns. Ross ... more   less
