It's been 10 years since the last time we were at the hot springs. The last time the pools were a little tired. There has been a big improvement as new owners have just completed a major upgrade of the facilities with new pools, sauna, steam room and plunge pool. Completed 10 days before we arrived. Great improvements for what...

First visit there. Lovely spot, beautiful views, picturesque and breathtaking. 4 hot springs pool range from top 30s to low 40s, plus a 2.4m very cold water plunge pool that looks like a water well. The changing rooms are small, but modern, clean and tidy. There isn't a baby-changing table, and only 1 shower cubicle and 1 toilet cubicle. It...

A much quieter and more natural option than Hanmer. The water is not treated so there are black floaties. It was so relaxing and the cafe is also a great place. I tried to get accomodation but it was booked out.

Thanks so much for taking the time to write a review. We are so glad you enjoyed your experience with us, the black algae in our pools is naturally occurring algae which proves our water is alive and healthy. The algae has been tested and was found to share similar properties to spirulina. Hopefully you will be able to stay...

This place is amazing. I honestly can't believe some of the bad reviews I have read on here? These people who write them must be so bored and lonely to write such nasty things. We had a great chat with Jen who was really passionate about the plants and hot pools, it was great to speak with someone who has...

Should have been a relaxing retreat from life, used to be. New owners obviously updating amenities but missing boat completely when it comes to relaxing peace and quiet. While the staff where generally very friendly they where also intrusive. It was like entering into an international backpacker environment with loads of young staff obviously having a wonderful bonding time but...

Thanks so much for your comments, we will take these on board to ensure we create a relaxing atmosphere at our stunning location. We are in the process of upgrading our facilities which includes keeping the ground manicured and native planting around the pools.

It is a lovely place to have a break. Yes, it needs some updates, but we have seen great work in progress. I was very pleased to discover a dry sauna and a steam sauna. Clean and well functioning. Very friendly staff, great food. Lots of hiking options. It was actually great to spend a day on St.James track and...

"Maria Springs provides people the opportunity to re-connect" was the catch phrase from more than one staff member - "see beyond the rooms" was another. If that is the best excuse for the dated, dirty cabins provided then the website needs to updated to show the facilities for what they are - peeling wallpaper, ill fitting joinery, hospital lino flooring,...

Thanks so much for your comments, we will certainly take these on board. We are in the process of upgrading the property. The pools and bathing areas were our first tier of upgrades and will be followed by the accommodation and other areas.

Staff were super attentive and friendly. Cabins need updating. Although clean, there were dead sand flies on the sills and live ones around as we were bitten in the night. Restaurant food and staff were great. The outside pools were authentic (with black algae), lovely and warm but we soon retreated from the swarms of sand flies. Indoor pool and...

We visited almost exactly a year ago and found the place to be charming. It still is charming although there is a lot of refurbishment going on. We will be very interested to see how it ends up once the work is finished. I like the improvements they are making but I do miss the Japanese theme - that's what...

We stopped off here on our way home from Christchurch for a bite to eat & coffee. The location is stunning overlooking the river.
