One of the great things about this place is how the hosts have managed to create different spaces and styles of accommodation within the gaol to suit different travellers needs. We were on a family trip and in the budget style family accommodation (there are the more expensive self contained units as well). For families with older kids, it is...

This will be a highlight of any trip through this part of Australia. You get to see behind the scenes, learn about the history of an actual historical gaol, spend the night and take some great photos/selfies. A big plus for me and my partner was how friendly and hospitable James, Mel and family are. In terms of an old...

Great place for a night or two. Rooms are converted gaol cells. We stayed in their double with our own private toilet amenity but most rooms share ammenities including showers in a separate room. Buildings have been tastefully decorated and there is still work in progress. A little hard for parking in the front in our case because the weather...

Great project of the owners who with much effort and love turned the prison into a beautiful place to stay! Due to limited time we could sadly only stay one night, but would have liked one or two more! Also the city has quite some things to offer (tame possums, maar, restaurants, etc.)! Highly recommended!

Now this was definetely the funniest and most memorable accomodation we ever had. Its hard to decribe how special it is, with all the courtyards, gardens, lounges. Very clean, very comfortable bedding, great showers, great communal kitchen and lounge. We stayed while a music event took place, great fun and free for us. Slept like an angel here. We would...

My boyfriend and I are currently backpacking around Australia - this has definitely been our favorite place so far! We stayed in a 'cell' and had plenty of room. The whole place is so interesting - it's great just to look around. The facilities are five star - great kitchen and lounge area. I would recommend to anyone.

Our cell was very quite first night, second night we had some other people trying to figure out how to use showers/lights in bathroom. Once they figured that out it was quiet again. Staff/owner was very nice and showed us around. Enjoyed the shared living area and kitchen. Thank you for a great stay in a very clean room.

I only needed a room for one night on my way from Melbourne to Adelaide, and when I came across the Mount Gambier Gaol on google, I figured, why not?! When I arrived, James opened the door and checked me in, then gave me a quick tour. He also told me to feel free to walk around the grounds and...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Our gaol journey all began with a vision to turn an old debilitated building into a vibrant community asset. We originally hoped to create a new atmosphere that was warm, inviting and both community and family focused. We, along with our two young boys, own and run our family business; we are blessed with the ongoing assistance of our fabulous staff and wonderful family. We have much love for the old building, her history and our spectacular Limestone Coast region and for this reason have opted to remain an independent accommodation provider. We love to travel, enjoy new experiences and meet refreshing people; running the old gaol is allowing us as parents to raise our sons in a beautiful part of Australia whilst still meeting amazing guests from all over the world. Every day we see new faces, are moved and excited by guest’s travel adventures whilst living in an old English prison! We are a young business with many more fun ideas and improvements yet to unveil. We have spent the last three years creating and establishing our business. We are now excited to move onto further promoting who we are and what we have to offer! The Old Mount Gambier Gaol was a functioning 'English Prison' from 1866 to 1994.In 2010 we opened the gaol doors for a new venture. We had a vision to create a place where our community could relax and enjoy various events and where travelers could combine a comfortable stay with a unique experience. Almost three years later we are still pursuing that dream. ... more   less
