My partner's parents recommended this place based on a great stay they had previously, and they were staying in another unit during this year's Waitangi Day trip. We arrived ex-Christchurch at about 1pm, and had to call the 0800 number listed on the office door, as it was otherwise unattended (sign said check-in from 2pm). Fair enough, and the hosts...

This was such a great find through the information center. The booking was easy and when we turned up to check in, found a rather pleasant clean and beautiful cottages/units. It was clean and well presented with complimentary bottle of wine. We booked another night. All linen provided with everything one needed when on a trip. Self contained, free wireless...

Thank you for reviewing your stay with us at Bay Cottages. We were very fortunate not to sustain any damage from the earthquake. We are fully up and running again, though road access is still up and down at the moment. We hope to have a road open to the south within the next 10 days.

We have stayed here twice, once on our first trip to NZ then again when we returned a few years later and both times it was wonderful. The accommodation is really good, very clean and with some great scenery just down the drive! Hope all is well re the earthquake.

Thank you for your kind words. The earthquake has shaken us but we are still standing. The motel has no damage. We are now waiting for water and other services to be re-connected.

Nice, quiet location on the South Bay, over the hill from the main tourist hot spot. Easy access with comprehensive facilities (e.g. linen, well equipped kitchen). Comfortable, with everything the four of us needed. We arrived later than expected, but this was not an issue, Graeme was friendly and helpful. The South Bay in the early morning is delightful and...

This accommodation is sited in South Bay just over the hill from the Main Town centre. The managers are friendly and pleasant. The rooms are spacious and have the most comfortable bed I have ever stayed in. The name Bay Cottages reflects that they are more of a cottage than a Motel as you need to take your own shampoo,...

Stayed here a second time because we love the place, both South Bay and the motel or cottages. Fortunately the weather was perfect with lovely sunsets. The cottage we stayed in looked straight down to the sea. It was very comfortable with everything we needed and the hosts are very friendly and helpful. If we travel to South Island again...

Large room, clean, full kitchen facilities, great bed, good shower. Away from the touristy downtown. Just steps from the beach. Well, maybe 300 and across the street, but it is close. However, walking to town is a LONG walk, but doable for a great lunch.. Graeme is an excellent host. Bring the family. Laundry facilities available.

I have always found Kaikoura to be too touristy and overrun with backpackers and tacky souvenir shops. But South Bay is a little gem over the hill and Bay Cottages is excellent budget priced accommodation here. Clean and modern with all you need for a short stay. Bonus was the morning boat trip with host Graeme to check the crayfish...

It's a shame this accommodation can't be booked online and that you have to call or email for a reservation. That said, Graeme was very prompt to reply to our emails. When I made the reservation, in Feb '15, the rate was $110 a night but Graeme wouldn't guarantee that rate and did say that it may have gone up...

Perfect spot if you want peace and quiet. Short ride to town. Beach nice - even found my first paua shells. Lovely outside garden. Unit was spacious and well equipped. Too bad our whale watch was a blow out.
